Amalie Bruun has always paved her own path, challenging underground preconceptions of heavy metal ever since the release of her debut Myrkur EP in 2014. Her first two full-length studio albums, 2015’s M and 2017’s Mareridt, recast black metal in the most personal yet expansive of terms, their blending of Amalie’s Danish folk roots with tempestuous internal struggles breathing new life into a subgenre whose followers can be rigidly possessive. With the release of her new album, Folkesange, Amalie Bruun has set out to journey into the very heart of the Scandinavian culture that marked her childhood. Folkesange relinquishes black metal for a refined yet far-reaching evocation of traditional folk, combining songs ancient and new to sublimely resonant effect. After the nightmare-induced visions that wrought themselves throughout Mareridt, Folkesange offers an emotional sanctuary, a means to reconnect to something permanent and nature-aligned. It’s an awareness that’s become deeply bound to the album’s organic, regenerative spirit, from the opening track Ella’s heartbeat, frame-drum percussion and crystalline vocals that become the grounding for a rapt, richly textured awakening, to the gentle carousel of the closing Vinter, with its nostalgia-steeped connotations of seasonal, snowfall-bewitched awe. Storytelling, rites of passage, and the invocation of a continuity that passes through time and generation are all part of folk music’s tapestry, and Folkesange taps into all these currents in their most essential form. In part a purist’s approach to the genre, free from over-interpretation and fusion, the use of traditional instruments throughout, such as nyckelharpa, lyre, and mandola offer a deeper, more tactile connection to their source, an unbroken line of communication back to the past. But the album is no museum piece; it resonates in the here and now, aided by the spacious production of Heilung member and musical collaborator Christopher Juul. Cinematic yet intimate, Folkesange exists in a state of boundless reverie, bourne by string-led drones, cyclical, elegiac rhythms and Amalie’s frictionless voice, all carrier signals for deep-rooted, ancestral memories, and associations felt on an elemental level. It’s a binding of the otherworldly and the earthy that echoes the the subject matter of many of the tales themselves. Written by Amalie, Leaves Of Yggdrasil’s medieval cadences bind tragic love story and mythology, full of both fairytale wonder and deeply human foible. Tor i Helheim, its dreamily persistent rhythm redolent of both innocence and encroachment, is based on a poem from the Icelandic Eddas, relating a journey into the underworld of Hel where the sparse nature of the accompaniment becomes the medium that carries you along in its thrall. An immersive experience in its own right, but also belonging to a wider, pagan folk-based renaissance that has attracted a devoted following worldwide, Folkesange answers a need that has become ever more pressing in turbulent times. A zeroing in on a resonance that is both intrinsic and enduring, it’s a rediscovery of personal grounding, and an experience that reaches beyond culture to remind us of a shared, deeply rooted inheritance. A tuning fork that binds the personal and the universal, Folkesange is a reminder that the most transcendent experiences are those closest to home. (Words by Jonathan Selzer)
Amalie is without doubt one of the most extraordinary women in the music industry today. I adore the fact that she does folk music as well as metal. Can't wait for the new album
You know, amidst the chaos of the world and the seriousness of the current situation we are facing, its nice to put headphones on and listen to something that puts your mind at peace
When I heard this song I've felt a rare and strange feeling of joy and happiness. I've felt like I was not in this world anymore, how such a beautiful melody could exist in it? A melody that would bring tears to the eyes of the Gods themselves. As if it was a sound from another world that reaches you and makes you want to live in that world. Makes you think 'if such a beautiful thing can emerge from that place I want to go there right now'. But then the song comes to an end and you open your eyes, it's the real world again. It's something hard to describe in words, you can only fell it in your core. This is how I describe "Gudernes Vilje", much more than just a beautiful song.
Reminds me *a lot* of Loreena McKennit. I would be very happy to have someone continue in that vein. I am not interested in the black / death metal stuff at all, but I love this album.
Every song released from this new album has been a masterpiece! This is going to be the finest Myrkur album to date. Cannot wait to hear the full recording.
To all native peoples of Europe: remember your heritage, honour your culture and ancestors! It is not racist to share an affinity with your own people and culture! It's natural to be wary of outsiders! God gave us the gift of discernment! It's time to be brave and stand up, otherwise traditional European music like this will soon disappear.
They sold the birthright of our ancestors to a strange god in exchange for temporary political gain. Many of the children of ash and elm are still asleep but we are awakening.
Christian Saxon Norwegian. I was born Christian and remain so, but I hear the songs of Nøkken when I pass the stream. I see the Huldra run through the trees. I see my ancestors and tribe play in the woods and howl as wolves, shouting Hagalaz Woðanaz. I see the Soppmenn and the Nisse of the Skog. I see and I remember. And so I write stories of these beautiful spirits and of Widukind and Verden. All Germanic people should remember and for us Saxons, we should look at Verden and remember what we lost.
@@Jürgen_von_SchumacherBased. This is how I feel. I will remain a Christian, but I will not be rid of my Germanic nature. I do not believe this is what Christianity asks of us.
@@DaniFilth87 hahaha At that time I actually enjoyed Ed Sheeran's song but I get what you mean. We definitely need some Myrkur. Perhaps in the Silmarillion🤞
OMG die nächste single die mir gänsehaut beschert und ich sofort tränen in den augen hab. Einfach so wunderschön. Ich bin so froh das sie dieses album gemacht hat und kann es kaum abwarten bis ich es endlich in meinen händen halte 😍 myrkur hat sich damit selbst übertroffen. Greetings and much love from germany in the lovely north of the earth ❤️❤️❤️
I don't know how I didn't find these songs earlier, since I listen to Myrkur for pretty long, but damn it I'm happy I stumbled onto this. Thank you for this, keep making folk music, this is amazing
This is awesome, really like the song. I'd just wish that the industry would chill on the LOUDNESS productions (especially for songs like this) and give us a more dynamic, non-fatiguing sound.
I thought it was only me, I had to lower the volume a little bit in order to appreciate all the music correctly, don't get me wrong, I loved this song so much! But the production it's a little bit loud; I totally agree with you.
Something about this is so captivating. I can’t stop listening to it. I feel like it’s magical and pulling me towards some place that I’ve never seen, but yet I’m longing to go.
Y’know, I absolutely love black metal, and am kinda upset that it won’t be on the album. But there’s no denying how beautiful this album is going to be :)
It is a folk record, why is it disapointing or surprising to so many? She has performed with both settings (acoustic/folk) and metal on her tours which are different but very complementary at the same time. Heaviness is not all about distortion and speed of light drumming, it is also conveyed in the lyrics/mood.
