Watching the AAR for this has convinced me that (at least in the modern titles) there's never a reason *not* to grab all the AT capabilities out of an APC or IFV, turn 1, just in case. The troops might be tired from carrying everything, but at least they won't be dead from getting overrun by AFVs.
It probably depends on what AT weapon we are talking. Without AT4, you should probably not exit to toilet. But Javelin is weight issue, so I would argue for 1 squad in platoon to have it on them if there is no clear armoured danger.
I think it'd actually be fun to see you try this one again! Normally I wouldn't say that due to the meta-gaming nature of it, but it would be fun to see how you'd do it differently!
I loved this mission. I also messed up when the armored attack began, but I got more lucky with my ability to get my javelins and more lucky with my Army teams actually hitting non-ERA parts of the T72-AVs. Or rather, the AI battleplan issuing commands to the tanks to enter the urban area is what gave me my lucky break for the Army scouts to actually hit with their AT

Army General Leto Atreides: In the North Atlantic Treaty Area, we dominate by sea power and air power. In Syria, the United States must cultivate >desert power
Well that was an interesting one to watch 'done properly' (surprises notwithstanding). The Army was definitely in a *horrible* position, and it does feel like they'd be best served by turning around and rushing right back up the road they drove down! Finding a nice revetment or apartment t1 to 2km away to peer down their javelin sights at Delta from would be far more useful, though the 50s taking apart the BMPs was impressive. Reminds me of all the times I've had my BMPs taken apart by M113s in Cold War. But of course, the man of the match was the Soviet vehicle optics designer. My Abrams were late and just didn't show for this one!, But I was *very* impressed by the LAVs taking the T-72s head-on and winning. I got two with AT weapons (one to a javelin, one to mass AT-4) but the other two T-72s rushed to Point Delta and into a hail of fire from the LAVs. Smoke everywhere, naturally, and they kept firing at the frontal armour through the smoke (courtesy of their thermals) and the system degradation was such that the crew dismounted, while the other turned to present its side armour in confusion and was killed by a thousand 25mm pin-pricks. Though I would like to take the opportunity to complain that the British Warrior IFV is horrifically badly treated, as I've had them refuse to take flanking shots on T-72s and the like from point blank ranged, but Marine LAVs and even the strykers actually try and sometimes do something as a result. And the Warrior is even kitted out for anti-armour work, with its massive ammo imbalance favouring AP. *Sigh*. I would say that I 'called' the enemy armour though - I saw the support list and the 50% casualty limit and inferred (on an admittedly meta level) that this is a small link up where shit hits the fan and the big guns come screaming in to help. Not the last time that's going to happen in this campaign...
Hey, really cool vid Hapless. I love it when even the CM greats are surprised, and am glad it was fun for you. SF is my fav to watch and to play. I'm also glad I'm not the only one that completely misses potential threats. I can't tell you how many times I've groaned in despair when something unexpected tears through my pixeltruppen leaving smoking ruin in its wake. Good stuff!
great video! this must have been your luckiest mission yet because you are right, you were exposed multiple times and had the BMPs or Syrian tanks gotten more rounds off, you might have lost alot more than just 6 infantry men.
Well well well, the master becomes the student! I think the debacle with the Army could have been excused in other scenarios, especially were there a far more alarming threat to deal with near the party HQ, but for me there's 2 major factors that weigh in. First, the resistance so far had been weak and disorganized, and you had all but encircled the HQ by the time the 'reinforcements' showed up. Any fears that there was a serious threat lurking should ahve been put to bed, allowing you breathing space to look elsewhere and take the proverbial blinders off. But the second, and most egregious, is the access to dominant positions. There's enough javelins between those boys in the strikers to be considered an AT platoon, and to each team a massive block of flats that would give them commanding views over the entire flank. It's almost perfect, and yet, totally overlooked. Luckily the strikers made mincemeat of the BMPs, and luckily the Abrams arrived in-time to clean up the breakthrough T-72s, but on another day, against better prepared opposition, I think this would have been a massacre. The army would have been swept up, leaving the marines to rely on 2 Abrams in urban terrain for all of their AT capability. Perhaps you were having too much fun! I've certainly made those oversights myself when I get carried away, especially when everything seems to be going so well. I just never stop to think maybe I should re-deploy my stinger teams in-case a frogfoot shows up. Maybe I should reorient my TOW humvee to cover that huge and remarkably unpopulated field on the map edge. Maybe I should just check that nobody's low on ammunition!
Just finished this Campaign.... I can't remember, but I thought the briefing said there may be Armor or Mech forces in the area. I always make sure 2 out of the 3 Army squads grab Javelins if available.
I think that if you did not held back the army units at the start they would be the ones getting flanked by the BMPs and if you set up your marines in the checkpoint and facing the Party HQ instead of in the buildings next to the spawn zone you would be hit in the back by the airborne.
It's been too long since I did this mission. However, you definitely did better and/or got more lucky. I did grab the Javelins before disembarking on the upper-right of the map but I suffered more casualties and lost a couple APCs. I'm pretty sure I got a Syrian surrender but my army/marines were a bit bloodier than your blokes.
I've not played a lot of Combat Mission, so I'm wondering if not picking up the Javelins was a deliberate decision. I'm assuming that troops have a limited carrying capacity, so was there something else you chose to grab instead of the Javelins?
I didn't grab anything else- but you're right that the troops have a limited carrying capacity. If they carry too much stuff, they slow down and I didn't want to be assaulting buildings at walking pace
I don't quite understand the point of linking up and occupying Delta. I mean, I suppose that they want to encircle the city, but if so why are Tango and Whiskey touch objectives and not occupy? Why would the two forces simply rush to Delta just to say high to each other? Seems like what that does is just gather many unit in one place so they can be ambushed or hit with artillery.
There can be a lot of value in physically linking up like this. There's some morale and psywar benefits (always nice when the enemy knows they're surrounded), as well as the opportunity to communicate better and reduce the potential of blue-on-blue. As for the touch objectives, I'd guess they're there to make sure the roads get proved.
Coordinating with a neighboring element is a lot easier when you can stand next to them and point to specific landmarks instead of hoping they understand what you mean thtough the radio
The Army is in an even worse position. They're wearing UCP.
The true tragedy
And in Strykers. Those poor bastards.
Their biggest problem...is that they're not Marines!
