Il est Bel et Bon

Pierre Passereau (fl. 1509-1547) was a French composer of the Renaissance. Along with Clément Janequin, he was one of the most popular composers of 'Parisian' chansons in the 1530s, his music performed widely across Europe.
Passereau's chansons are mostly light-hearted affairs. He liked to use nonsense syllables, often in imitation of animals. 'Il est Bel et Bon', arguably his most popular piece, portrays two countrywomen discussing the merits of their respective husbands over the sound of their chickens.
Il est bel et bon, commère, mon mary.
Il estoit deux femmes toutes d`un pays.
Disans l`une a l`autre: Avez bon mary?
Il est bel et bon, commère, mon mari.
Il ne me courousse ne me bat aussy;
Il fait le ménage,
Il donne aux poulailles
Et je prends mes plaisirs.
Commère, c`est pour rire
Quant les poulailles crient

Petite coquette, qu`est-ce cy?
Il est bel et bon, commère, mon mary.

There were two women in the countryside,
Says one to the other: have you a good husband?

He does the chores, he feeds the chickens
And I can enjoy myself.
