This performance is what cemented in my mind the greatness that is Morissette; this and her cover of "Fly Like a Bird" As you pointed out, she holds back on the embellishments(her signature squeaks and whistles, although a few growls sneak in). What an artist!
Morissette made me listen to the songs that i don't intentionally listen before like this kind of Broadway songs because my favorites are Folk, Rock and Country. Morissette is really like a magnet that will pull you in her world of music. 🤩
Thank you so much, Dr. Dan, for your thorough review and analysis, and, of course, your appreciation and compliments to Morissette. 🥰 I now only realized, because you mentioned it, that in this session, she is not holding the mic, nor is it placed infront of her mouth as in the Wish Bus, so she had to manage the dynamics of her voice, the lows and highs, the pulls and push, by her own control and adjustment, while at the same time keeping in pace with the sound track. Not only that, she has to maintain her story-telling through her facial expressions, smile, and gestures, while looking directly at her audience (us) through that single camera. The level of professionalism and efficiency Mori shows is absolutely astounding and admirable. 🥰 Those big notes towards the end always get to us, no matter how many times we've watched this performance. And you made us realize that it was really a hard thing to do. That because of the difficulty of the song throughout, at that point the voice has almost reached its breaking point due to fatigue and exhaustion, and yet Mori still belted out those big notes, rich, full, not strained, constricted nor screechy, but breathtaking and awesome, and if that was a live performance on stage with a huge audience, deserved a standing ovation of cheers and applause. 🥰👏👏👏
Thanks for your analysis, Dan. It was fair and insightful. As a solid Morissette fan, I didn't mind the suggestions that you have said, after all, they're constructive and you know your area of expertise being a vocal coach. I just like to point out though some things that place Morissette in a different league are her mastery of her story telling technique, her close to flawless diction, her on point song build-up and ability to use emotions properly to connect with her listeners. These of course are additions to her great range and powerful voice. In my opinion, she's a gifted vocalist and performer.
You’re focused on one area; emotions and not so much technicality. Those are the things that are common basic vocal attribute. I think the technicality of her vocal ability overall should be the main discussion.
@@frisc0pn0ib0iNo, the other commenter also mentioned diction, which is technique. And emotions are certainly not "basic vocal attribute," whatever that's supposed to mean.

This is the most spectacular and most exciting performance of that song I have ever heard. And it is done flawlessly by the most perfect vocalist I've known. Morissette is just killing this song, sitting in her room, giving us the raw taste of her outstanding abilities with nothing but a slight reverb on the mike. Amazing! Thank you for featuring Morissette. For my taste you hook on the little imperfections you thought you heard a little bit too much, losing the focus on all those incredible things Morissette presents us here.
Great reaction. Your analysis of how well she manages her vocal tone is spot on. I have never heard another vocalist do it as well as Morissette. Why is she not an international superstar?!?!

Thanks for the great analysis Dr. Dan. What a powerhouse she is. It’s interesting that a singer’s choice to not sing something like whistle tones or complicated melisma can be just as important to the performance as what she does choose to include. I imagine it takes a measure of maturity to resist doing it just because you can. I do enjoy hearing your personal preferences in your analysis. It kind of give us permission to also have preferences. Personally I like the sound she got where you identify vocal fatigue. I’d like to hear her do more of that (by choice not due to fatigue) Love how she spices it up a bit with the grows too. The energy she exudes through voice and gestures and facial expressions is fantastic and contagious. What a wonderful pick me up. I felt I could defy gravity just by experiencing her sing this. Love it 😍
This rendition is to me why Mori is the greatest! Imagine her performing this with full orchestra, full sound production and on stage… **sighhh** heaven! Waiting for you here in NYC Mori!
So nice to have someone with knowledge talk about this generational singer. Morissette stated in an interview that she will no longer whistle like she has done in the past. Morissette now uses her whistle as an "accent" in a song. Mariah is a cautionary tale and Morissette is heeding it. May I recommend 'Someone Like You" from Jekyll and Hyde. Not only is it a simple performance but a deeply connected one. The actor in Morissette shines.

Hey DD, Mori is in Sydney 9 Dec 2023 at the Sydney Coliseum Theatre (Rooty Hill RSL). There is a huge Filipino community there (Sydney West) and it makes sense for her to perform there.
Thank you so much for this. This is my first time watching your video analysis. I learn some things about this performance. I am also blown with that "fly" eversince I watched this video on YT. More power and learnings! Subbed.
I enjoyed your analysis of Morissette Amon's vocal performance in Defying Gravity. I agree with your assessment of her technique and breath support, but I don't think the moment you identified as vocal fatigue was actually that. I think it was a stylistic choice on her part to have a whispery or intimate sound in her voice. She often does that with songs she sings. I think it's an interesting interpretation, and it adds to the emotional impact of the song. Thanks for sharing your insights!
It was a home recording during the 2 year lockdown and nobody could go out. Everyone was recording at home to get by the miserable years. Even the recording equipment is clipping.
I don't think the embellishments are too much. She is not recording the song for a cast album, so I think a performer is justified in taking some liberties to give the piece a personal touch. Since Morissette is admired for her riffs and runs, putting a few in here and there seems appropriate to me. And, given the context of the recording, a lot of pop singers would go much further. You'd have to ask Stephen Schwartz (the composer of Wicked), but I think he'd give it a big thumbs up. I'm not convinced that the issues you identified as vocal fatigue are necessarily that, though they might be. And the slight wobble on the long, soft note may just have been a lack of preparation. Given how strongly she lasts through the demanding end of the number, I'm not sure how much vocal fatigue she was experiencing early on in the song. Morissette often has an audible intake of breath (a consistent minor issue over many years), but it is not as much of an issue for her as it is for some singers. I agree, though, that it would be worth working on with a vocal coach.
Queen Morissette Amon👑😍🇵🇭 Defying Gravity cover is the Best ever I prefer than the Original because you can hear her beautiful clean tone, as she said from the start it's her own style or take of her favorite Broadway Songs😍💗👏 for me she's the Best Female Vocalist today👑♥️ Thanks
You are not being finicky Dr. Dan, you are just being yourself, fully analyzing the performance. Besides, you are correct to point out that this song is the singer's last song in a full session of singing big songs. Very understandable.
from a musical theatre purist this is not "how it is done". One thing I learned in presentations is that you speak/sing to your audience. She does that perfectly. As for Broadway, the production direction would set the rules and #Morissette will deliver, perfectly as always.

A monstrous performance, which confirms its greatness. She had been sick, but she had to do the One take, she always dominates even when she is sick. P.S. When she sings morissette amon, the other singers are in strict real silence. The queen. 👸🧎
"breath management" you say and we are talking about Morissette? 😅😅😎😎 well Mori defies everything in the text book about voicing not to mention a number of songs being performed prior to this song, big extremely very hard songs at that! let Demi performed it or Ariana in the same setting and see what happened 🙄🙄
I love that you wanted the performance as clean as possible but it won't hurt if Morissette puts a touch of her artistry to make her perfromance her own. And I don't think it was neccessary to put whistle notes on a song that doesn't have whistle notes in the first place and I feel like Morrissette knows it wouldn't make sense, just because she can doesn't mean she has to. 😊 She's Asia's Phoenix. ❤❤❤
Dr Dan. Like you I rate Morissette as one of the best vocalists out there. You don't appear to have analysed one of her best performances yet. “Could You Be Messiah”. It is sung with so much passion, stripped back to piano and voice and done in one take. Get the tissues out and watch “Could You Be Messiah”. She puts everything into this performance and she is crying herself by the end. Here is the link ruclips.net/video/g7fa7yJ4ckM/видео.html
Vocally beautiful but I do agree (having played the role of Elphaba) that the embellishments are not necessary and in fact are out of character. But given that this is a performance of the song Defying Gravity and not a performance of Elphaba in the show Wicked, it is simply stunning.💚
I agree with you, and she herself said in the intro to one of the songs in this six-piece set that she was basically trying to strike a balance between honoring the original broadway style while infusing some of her own signature sound (in this case, the grit).
I have watched Idina sing this on RUclips and it was not so good, its the song that Idina is famous for and for me at this one time did not reach her stage Performances, now Mori really SANG this, ok it was a little bit faster, but superb.
"BAHAHAHA....."Voice fatigue"....You seriously have GOT to be kidding me......she got stronger and STRONGER.....unbelievable.....How is he a "vocal coach"???
He has a doctorate in music. Shut up if you are not a professional musician or a very rare amateur who knows more about music than the so called experts. Dr. Dan is not infallible, but he has more authority than the rest of us who do not have a basic degree in music.
you cannot remove the sound of air intake from the performances of Morissette......with the power, speed, length of of the notes she delivers, it is 99% unavoidable in a song......that percentage goes down however if the song is a "slow" "soft" ballad wherein less airflow in the lungs are required....but then, there is also a case she uses long extended breaths for 2 to 3 phrases before air intake.......so if you are going to be "picky" with that, don't attempt to work with Mori,.....things will not go well.
Many vocal coaches had issues with her growls and riffs especially the more classical/Broadway types... And you were the first to notice some fatigue at the end of her session
"Many vocal coaches," eh? Exaggerate much? I've watched basically all the reactions to this performance that exist. SOME vocal coaches noted that her use of grit is atypical for broadway and would not fly if she were actually performing in the show on broadway, but I don't recall "many" vocal coaches expressing "issues" with it. I also don't recall "many" coaches complaining about the ornamentation. She actually fills with riffs and runs far less frequently than many of her counterparts. Also, she herself made it abundantly clear during this six-song set that she was trying to fuse her signature sound with the traditional broadway style, not do a 100% authentic broadway rendition. Classically trained singer here, btw.
Kindly react to GIGI DELANA ggvibes one the best and you will never dissappoint.Yesterday when i was young,Through the fire,I who have nothing some of her song and many more.Thank you and more power to your channel.
There is really no need. Katrina, and I can’t stress this enough, has a very typical voice. You will find someone like her in almost every amateur singing competitions in the Philippines.
This wreaks of desperation. We see you, @Rosannasfriend. You go on every Morissette video to either downplay her abilities (to uplift someone else's), or use her popularity to jumpstart someone else's. It's so tacky. You don't even have the decency to comment on the actual reaction.
@@JoeyAndamo Thank you for saying this, Joey. I have absolutely no problem with her preferring Katrina, but the continuous behavior of commenting in Morissette videos for the express purpose of getting little digs in about her, encouraging other fandoms to squabble with her fans, etc. is old and tiresome. And it doesn't come across the way she seems to think it does. It's not a good look.

Mori sitting or standing up in this performance ?
I think she is sitting!
well, keep your preference to yourself.
I have watched Idina sing this on RUclips and it was not so good, its the song that Idina is famous for and for me at this one time did not reach her stage Performances, now Mori really SANG this, ok it was a little bit faster, but superb.
I 😘 ve ur personalitie but sometimes I get the wrong message in these videos am I wrong or right I just feel like it's a parable
Dr. Dan is not infallible, but he has more authority than the rest of us who do not have a basic degree in music.
you cannot remove the sound of air intake from the performances of Morissette......with the power, speed, length of of the notes she delivers, it is 99% unavoidable in a song......that percentage goes down however if the song is a "slow" "soft" ballad wherein less airflow in the lungs are required....but then, there is also a case she uses long extended breaths for 2 to 3 phrases before air intake.......so if you are going to be "picky" with that, don't attempt to work with Mori,.....things will not go well.
check out the one takes of the amazing katrina velarde they are ridiculous talent wise
Classically trained singer here, btw.
no vocal fatigue.....none
Kindly react to GIGI DELANA ggvibes one the best and you will never dissappoint.Yesterday when i was young,Through the fire,I who have nothing some of her song and many more.Thank you and more power to your channel.
So when are you gonna introduce yourself to fellow Filipino singer Katrina Velarde?
After the monumental performance of morissette amon, introducing a local singer like katrina, is suicide🤭
Maybe some time after he is finished in reacting to Morissette
