I think Dr Sueidi makes a really good argument: if you can't accept visible evidence for God's existence, how are you going to accept hidden wisdom behind suffering?

@@bengreen171 The emotional need to believe in God? This is a really stupid statement. This is a statement that applies and fits you more. You don’t believe in God to satisfy your desires.
It’s really crazy how two people can think about an argument completely differently. I think this is a great question that applies to people like you. If you have a problem with not believing in God because you can’t see him then how can you believe in something beyond your limited knowledge!!!!

@@bengreen171 There is one thing I notice of the bat in your tone it’s that you’re arrogant. Not surprising that you’re an atheist.
I feel like you don’t understand Islam or religion in general. The point of life is to actually believe in God without seeing him and have faith in him without any physical/vision. You mentioned multiple times that God is not a real thing. How do you define real? How do you define truth? As an atheist I’m surprised that you’re mentioning these things because if there’s no God then there is no truth. We’re just a bunch of particles with no value. There’s no right and wrong and we do what we thing is right. What is pain? What is feeling?
The way I define these things is through Islam. What is right? What Allah says it is. Why should we be good? Allah has put an instinct into us to be good we’re also being tested and we will suffer the consequences. We have a choice of being good, patient, grateful believers and we will be rewarded. On the other hand, we can be arrogant, harmful and non-believers and we will suffer. How do I know Islam is right? Many reasons including subjective and objective. I can tell that everything around me has a purpose. The beauty of this world cannot just be made by randomness that’s nonsense and believing in fairytales. I can tell I’m being tested everyday. Too many coincidences are happening. I have many subjective reasons.
      Objective:
1- The Quran (How can someone write such a book in the 7th century? How can he make such claims and get away with it? How is it still preserved? The strength of its language and ambiguity is phenomenal.)
2- Prophet Mohammed peace be upon him (The evidences of his prophethood is inevitable and the only way to get around this is to simply reject all Islamic history and say it’s fake) How can someone be a great prophet, father, husband of 9 wives at once, leader, live an ascetic life and lead a caliphate that almost conquered the whole world. The Arabs where nothing and he gave them value. The first ever man in history to have an Asian, European, African, Arab and all ethnicities fighting together for the truth.
3- The amount of guidance and knowledge Prophet Mohammed peace be upon him had including prophecies, miracles etc.
The chances of the evidences of Islam coming together to be by chance is basically 0.
You don’t have any purpose except worldly maters. You want success, money, women, materials that’s all you want. You may tell me I care for my family and I love them. What is love? How did we develop these soul connections by randomnesses?
Lastly, I don’t want you to think that I’m attacking you but that I don’t see any truth in atheism, just limited human intellect trying to understand everything and rejecting beyond their knowledge. I see only hating the concept of God for emotional reasons. We’re unable to verify whether God is there or not using science or a physical tool. We need to think beyond just what we see.
Maybe you can ask God to guide us and be sincere then see what happens?
      May Allah guide us.

Dr. Abdullah Sueidi wanted to clarify something from the video. He used the attribute: All-loving about Allah, but the name of Allah al-Wadud actually means: "the One that loves and is loved". Allah loves belief, believers, good deeds and people that do good deeds. It's not correct according to Islamic Theology to say that Allah loves everything and everyone. There are many deeds and beliefs, as well as people doing these deeds and have these beliefs that Allah do not love. This is clear in many verses in the Qur'an.

One of the examples how to see the suffering from a true Muslim perspective.. See those detained in Guantanamo.. The way they face the suffering is incredible and has fascinated people and even drove some to embrace Islam.. (This is from the present examples, aside from many Hadiths that have been presented by Dr. Suedi.)
Mr. X converted to Islam while serving as a U.S. Army military policeman guarding detainees at Guantanamo Bay. It was the faith he saw lived by the detainees that drew him to study the religion he had been told was violent and destructive -- and he found there a discipline and peace he'd sought all his life. Such a deep meaningful episode with a guest I have never seen before. May Allah Reward you.
For me, the matter that sealed the problem of evil once and for all was some simple questions and answers.
Q: Do you remember the pain of being born ?
A: No, the pain was momentarily thus has been forgotten.
Q: Do you complain about the pain in your dream even though it felt so real ?
A: No because once I woke up to this reality, the pain of that reality no longer attached, thus forgotten.
Q: Can you guarantee for certain that people who seems to be in extreme suffering are actually suffering or is your senses are deceiving you ?
A: I can't guarantee that. My senses might perceive something to be extreme suffering but in reality, it's not. So I need to have some humility and I need to control my emotions in a world of trials and tribulation before passing hard judgement towards my creator.
Q: Can pain always be bad ?

The truth can make you feel uncomfortable to hear yet is necessary. A Doctor doesn’t want to tell his client that he has only days to live from cancer, but he does so he can present the cure. The Medicine makes no sense without the diagnosis of sickness first. God has diagnosed you as a sick individual with symptoms of lying, stealing, disrespecting parents, lusting after women, corrupt thoughts etc Jesus is the Medicine/Cure for your sickness of sin otherwise you will remain sick and eventually die from your disease of sin. When you mentioned the book "why do bad things happen to good people?" It immediately came to my mind the Hadith : "When Allah loves a servant, he tests them". For Muslims, the more trials you have, your faith in Allah increases". The people who have read Muhammad's PBUH life knows how he endured all the trials and tribulations.
He was called names by his own tribe.
He was thrown by stones in Al Taif.
    He was subject to boycott.
He was driven out from his home town Mecca.
    He was called a liar.
    He was called a sorcerer.
All six of his children died in his life time except Fatima.
His two biggest supporters, his wife Khadija and Uncle Abu Talib died during his most stressful time in Mecca.
He dealt with all the hypocrites, who tried to kill him.
His immigration and Fleeing with Abu Bakr only, from Mecca to Medina when they tried to kill him.
    He fought numerous battles.
And many many more. But he PBUH was the most patient, the most content, the most thankful to Allah the history have ever known, despite all his tribulations.

Salam. As I child I battled and wrestled with the concept of God because I could not compute the suffering which my parents underwent with a severly disabled child. I wanted to believe in something higher but perhaps i was too upset to reconcile everything. I have grown up with this suffering and effects me terribly until now. I dont understand why this has happened. Perhaps I never would in this life.
ALLAH guided my heart to islam, and gave me personal signs after a sincere search and in the next life I will understand everything which has happened in this life when I meet my Lord.

One interesting thing about severe suffering is that it either enlightens people or endarkens people. Those who are enlightened by it come closer to Allah in difficult times, those who are endarkened by it have a negative outlook and might even deny the Lord in the end. So suffering becomes almost like a test to show which people belong to which category. And it can be called fitna (test) - or in english trials and tribulations.

    THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM!
This interview was excellent. One point never addressed is the number of suffering children as Dr. Eherman stated. It is due to injustice of man and the proof of this is the news. The solution is to work diligently to establish justice in this life. It is the duty of humans and they will be asked for their efforts to establish this goal. I can think of countless examples of mass suffering because a group is carefully planning and investing in such misery.

@@lewis72 From the news, the minority of disasters are unavoidable. Probably, the majority are manmade. Tsunamis, volcanos, earth quakes, ... frequently happen in known areas. These region are also very attractive and people move there. If they have the option to move out when they suspect of a disaster is imminent, it will be to their advantage. Unfortunately, manmade borders and regulations prevent them from moving around efficiently.
Famine and droughts are caused by manmade mismanagement of resources and artificial borders. Destroying echo systems, sometimes intentionally, reflects back on the poor and helpless. As an example, the Sahara desert has cycles of drought and abundance. If people moved around freely it would have been for the best.
Poor people need justice and good management more than anything else. The offender is not "god", it is man pretending to be god.

Islamic God concept with many many attributes of Allah demonstrated in the stories and lessons given in the Quran and Sunna resolve the issue theologically. Thank you, Paul, for discussing this topic. When speaking about suffering, we should remember the suffering we cause ourselves and each other due to our own selfish, hasty, weak and fearful nature. We cannot always lay the cause of suffering at God's door; Satan, too, accuses God of leading him astray. We should remain mindful of our own arrogance and blindness.
Muslims have always understood the fundamental need for suffering and the essential role it plays in the purification of the soul. From suffering we learn to know our selves, learn humility, develop patience and empathy, and embrace creativity and problem solving. Most importantly, suffering rewards us by sweetening prayer and unburdening us (we are utterly reliant on God). So that even when ease comes, we remain mindful of God.

According to Muslim thought, this world is not paradise/Janna, but a test for both the believers and the unbelievers. It's not a logical problem for Muslims that there is suffering in this world. If the problems are created by men, then God/Allah permits the believers to rectify the error and restore justice. If it was caused by natural causes, this would have been written (maktub) for the believers and they must persevere, for their reward is in al-Ākhira/afterlife. As Mr. Sweidi says here, the claim that the belief in God is incompatible with the reality of the world is refutable. Thank you, Paul, for bringing all those brilliant minds to speak on your channel!

    Dear Paul
If suffering doesn’t exist, then children will never encounter “danger”. If children won’t encounter danger, then parents won’t worry about their children getting endangered and suffering injury as a result. Given the above causal arguments we can therefore conclude their won’t much need for parenthood (to provide shelter from danger and protection, love, education, …, etc. ). We won’t need to have families or belonging to a kinship. Life becomes easy and meaningless

Only sick people with disease in their hearts join gatherings of believers to try to humiliate them with their words. Of course, they fail to realize that they are the fools humiliating themselves in this world and in the next.

A wonderful discussion. I have watched it twice and have taken notes. Is there a way Paul, who I thank for a wonderful work he is doing - may Allah reward him for it immensely, can forward these rebuttals to Dr Bart Erhman please.

On the topic of suffering, use the following counter-argument, even though to me it appears as extremely logical and impossible to deny. So let's take a hypothetical argument between two people.
Person 1: How can God be All-Good is there is so and so in the world?
Person 2: So you expect perfect equity in this life?
Person 1: Not perfect equity, but the easing of sufferings, no senseless deaths, no wars, no famine, no plagues, etc.
Person 2: Even if all that were to be satisfied, the person acclimated to that hypothetical society would find injustice in smaller things, such as differences in height, differences in ability (intellectual/physical), differences in how much a person earns, differences in the places in which people are born and how those peoples differ in terms of development, and so on.
Person 1: But at least there would be no suffering.
Person 2: For a human it would be good enough, but God is Perfect, and imperfection cannot be in His creation. A life where there is no post-judgement must be a perfectly equitable life, as otherwise why would an All-Good, All-Perfect God create people who lives would be, even in the most minute way, inequitable. Indeed the only solution for a perfect being to create true equity in this life is to remove free-will, and create us as perfect equals, like blades of grass.
Person 1: But that's clearly not how the world is now, humans are different, we aren't the same, the world is fundamentally unequitable. So how can God be All-Good.
Person 2: I gave the prior argument as a preface to this one. The All-Good nature of God can be understood more easily through his attribute of being the Most-Just. God is Perfectly Omniscient, you can view this Omniscience as the following: God sees every quark or lesser, in the Universe, at it's exact location, down to the Planck length, or lesser, at every Planck time, or lesser, for all time, throughout all time. He knows everything there is to know, and more. As such, he has absolute knowledge, and is the absolute reference for everything. This allows Him to deal Absolute Justice. God is All-Good because He will offset the inequity of this world perfectly in the world to come. His will not deliver injustice to a person lesser than the weight of an atom. He knows everything, and can quantify everything. Any injustice you suffered here will be accounted for by Him. If you were born poor, born disabled, born only to be killed in war, famine, disease, cancer, murder, He will account for that, and deal with you with Perfect Justice. It is the only way to achieve true equity. What God gives to you is better than what you ask for, you ask for a lack of suffering in this world, but that cannot be possible while free-will exists. God gives you both free-will and perfect equity, there is no injustice, and God remains All-Good. In short, given the current condition of how we are, how we are built, the natural inequity that results from various factors such as socioeconomics, militarism, human vice, or straight up biological intra/inter gender variance, it is impossible for an All-Good and Perfect God, unless the inequity is offset perfectly, at a later time. Which Muslims believe in anyways. An athiest must prove that a faith's beliefs cannot be just according to its own belief tenets, he must take these tenets as given, as he himself is trying to disprove that very faith. For this reason, an Athiest must also take into consideration what the Day of Judgement entails. Unfortunately, doing so would lead to the "suffering" argument falling apart, as it yields perfect equity. Do not forget your life is nothing in the eyes of time. You have never lived in comparison to the infinite.
And that is why amongst the 6 major beliefs of a Muslim, one of them is the Belief in the Day of Judgement. Not going to bother replying to comments, I have some weight to squat and bench.

Very natural and easy to understand explanation, compatible with the villager to the throne, layman to the erudite. The wisdoms behind suffering far outweigh the harms, if only people knew.

Tough topic . Dr. Sueidi handled it cautiously, slowly , but surely.
I do believe it is all about the “ Test “ from Almighty God and the vast meaning of it . Believers or unbelievers - all have to undergo tryouts with evil and good for them for a testing til their death.
Here is the verse from The Qur’an :
“ Every soul shall taste of death ; and we try you with evil and good for a testing ; then unto Us you shall be returned “. The Prophets : 36

What's our struggle comparing with the prophet Muhammad pbuh him , all his life was struggle from childhood as growing an orphan kids poor adult and the tortured he got from kfar and most of his relatives and kids died in his life until the last day of his life when he said the pain of illness that I have is is like the illness of tow man of you .
Even though he is the best of all creation he always reminded his companion of Akherah and the price of Allah is giving to the patient people .
What ever our like is as believers we feel comfortable alhamdulillah for every the only life is the thereafter.

Wow very eye opening on the findings of Jonathan Brown and Dr. Suedi on the lack of coverage on suffering by Islamic scholars. It now makes sense that when we don't have the whole picture, we make suffering an existential crisis as Dr Suedi mentioned.

Your Thoughts?
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
