On May 18, 1980, I had left WSU to go to a friend’s house to do some team roping. It was afternoon and I was wearing a navy blue polo shirt…although it wasn’t supposed to rain, a very dark cloud formation came in from the west. It got dark as night. I remember getting ‘dust’ in my eyes and my partner asked if I suddenly had a dandruff problem as my shoulders were covered with light gray powder. Then my partner’s wife came out and told us Mt St Helens had erupted and we needed to get the horses inside. They had about 50 horses outside and we spent an hour herding them into their small indoor arena. By then we had a couple inches of super fine ash everywhere…it was so fine and slippery it flowed like water and you couldn’t shovel it! I couldn’t drive back to WSU for a couple weeks but luckily the school cancelled finals week!!! A couple months later I took 3rd in heeling at the AJQHA World Championships AND was elected AJQHA President 🤠
