munstrumridcully They were literally called the Eastern Roman Empire for a thousand years, called themselves Augustii and Caesarii. They kept legal documents in, and spoke, Latin. They successfully reconquered and ruled Rome on multiple occasions. They are considered a continuation of the Roman Empire, and were actually wealthier and more powerful than the Westwrn half. The name "Byzantine Empire" didn't come into use until centuries after the fall of Constantinople, and that was mostly to differentiate the ERE - still the name used most often by scholars - from the Ottomans, who also referred to themselves as Roman Emperors. Now, they were definitely as much Greek as they were Roman. But you could easily say similar things about any of the former Roman provinces; the Greek-speaking territories just happened to last longer as a cohesive state than the other areas, which may well have had something to do with the shared language and culture.

That's why I put the winking smiley, to show I was being facetious. I always found it funny that they had no Rome in their Roman Empire. It made me think of the British Empire withiut the UK and run from like Australia or South Africa or something. I know they were a legit Roman culture and a real empire long after the collapse of the Western Empire, but still gone as the Roman Empire before the 17th century. Cheers :)

Sorry Jim but french toast deserves its place up there with pancakes. It's probably got a spot above waffles in my book. It does deserve its own restaurant like Waffle House or IHOP. 😡

Cornette just doesn't know how to carry the ball. Vince picked up on this in 96, and got rid of all the tacky mid 90's characters. Cornette is delusional.
