    My dad taught me years ago to use a wet bar of soap on screws to help them going into wood

    It’s really coming together and looking good. Who said nails would be easier 😂. I’ve got what’s left of a very old beeswax toilet seal for lubing screws.

    Looking very nice! I realize this is not your boat, but is there any chance we will get to see video of the boat in the water?

      Well that’s actually hard to say. I never got to see it splash and the owner hasn’t sent anything my way. I’ll have to prod him for something before we reach the end of this series.

    Bees wax is also traditional. It also thickens over time and is sticky.
    If it's not broken, don't fix it.

    File down (chamfer) the forward and aft rims of the holes in the railings to prevent them from catching the sandpaper. Also, I think they would look nicer.

      This is pretty much the first time I have ever encountered this. Unfortunately I don’t get much brand choice around here, and when a task is underway you can’t really hit pause to order in alternative products.

    Mark, I'm curious if waxing the ring nails would help them drive smoother. I don't use them very often and even when I do it is in soft woods so rarely have issues (except for bad hammer technique). Thanks as aways and have a great week.

    • @Nomadboatbuilding
      @Nomadboatbuilding  4 месяца назад

      I mostly use them in softer woods where driving isn’t a problem. I probably should have sized the holes a bit bigger but I think the next size up was probably too big for grabbing.

    I liked your description of the characteristics of screws . Didn’t hear much about ring nails and their innocent looking halos of holding that actually multi dementional razor like barbs and horns as befits those minions of evil. Why the explanation of the care,and skills needed to drive them,along with what might be taken as complaints about them, might lead someone to choose an alternative fastener.
    On a different note: I have been keeping Warre hives for several years now with moderate success. Lot of absconding the last two years though.

    • @Nomadboatbuilding
      @Nomadboatbuilding  4 месяца назад

      Absconding or swarming? The latter is easy enough to manage but absconding suggests some unfavourable conditions are at play. I’ve always stuck with Langstroth or top-bar or a hybrid of the two.

      @@Nomadboatbuilding sorry for the late reply, for the last two years two of my three hives have just disappeared late in the fall, different ones each time. To add insult to injury, I ordered some packaged bees for this season and they seem to have disappeared from the post office. I’ll see if I can convince a wild swarm or two to come live with me.

    • @Nomadboatbuilding
      @Nomadboatbuilding  4 месяца назад +1

      That's odd. I have actually had good luck with swarm colonies. I had one of those queens last about five years. She had excellent behaviour and produced several good offspring queens along the way.

    Do you sharpen the painter's scrapers in the same way you would a cabinet scraper? Thanks

    • @Nomadboatbuilding
      @Nomadboatbuilding  4 месяца назад +1

      No. I do rough shaping on a bench grinder or belt sander and subsequent touch ups with a file. There is no attempt to introduce a burr.
