Make sure you save your lumber receipts! I just finished a homemade boat, and the state of Minnesota is making me jump through hoops to get it registered and licensed. They keep saying, we need to see receipts. Anyway, this never occurred to me over the years it took me to finish my boat.I didn’t save any, so now I have to convince them somehow, to let me license it. I suppose they’re just being safe. People do steal boats, and remove the serial number tag. Then say it’s homemade. So, save those receipts!
Thanks for the tip, I don't think I have the receipts anymore either. Do they need the receipts to figure out the value of your boat? Or just to prove that you built it? Maybe the videos of my build could be good proof of ownership ? :)
Yes. For tax purposes. I have to submit a form to Dnr. And they will review it. Of course I have plenty of photos to prove I built it. It’s just frustrating that I have to jump through all these hoops. I’m chomping at the bit to get it on the water.
Update. I sent a letter to Minnesota Dnr. Explaining my situation along with the official form required. And I sent four photos of the boat. One for each side. Anyway, I got approved! And it only took a couple weeks. So it wasn’t so bad. I will admit I was freaking out after all the work building it. But I’m good to go. And I think Minnesota is probably one of the more difficult states to deal with. But the lesson is still there. Save all receipts and document everything. Build away my friends!😀
Wow this is very cool. It's videos like this that make me want to do my own boat project instead of buying a boat. It was inspiring watching your process and how its so very similar, but there are unique difference.
Hello. I live in Istanbul Turkey. I think more than a year. I want to build my own boat. I searched a lot in Istanbul. I couldnt find it. Please write me the dimensions of the boat you made. Please🙏🙏🙏🙂
regular plywood, unfortunately obtaining marine grade where i live is very hard, but its definitely a better choice if you can get your hand on it. The boat i still working great with not issues so far, but i check the boat regularly to make sure the plywood is not exposed anywhere. Just like a surfboard i need to stay on top of any dings.
Hello! Loved this video, very informative! I was quite inspired so I went online to try find some plans, even just for a cardboard prototype to see if I could do it, but the same plans don't seem to be available anymore.....? Does anybody know where I could get similar in depth plans or, better yet, get these plans somewhere else?
Its a mixture of Sawdust from all the panels I cut and epoxy. I filter the sawdust through a strainer and mix it with epoxy until it becomes like a peanut butter consistency.
I did not use marine grade ply. But I did use an excessive amount of epoxy. I check the boat after every session to make sure there are no dings that penetrate to the plywood. So far its holding up very well. Lets see what happens over time.
For a small boat like this Exterior grade PW is fine. On a bigger boat 13’ + that your investing 1-3yrs building I use Marine Grade and still glass/Epoxy exterior it will last indefinitely if done correctly.
9mm Plywood. The plans are designed for 6mm but living in a country with limited resources gives no other option. I'll make up for some of the extra weight by not adding stiffeners.
@@HANDIY …So much cheaper than marine plywood , I built a 12 ft skiff 15 years ago and cost me heaps using marine ply , I admit I might use it still in areas of the boat such as the bottom and sides maybe and everything else just normal ply , your boat looks awesome , I’m getting the boat building bug again , I absolutely love building boats , awesome video . 👍
Hi! Would you please make a more detailed, just tips video about plywood building? Im a 16 year old kid with a dad who is basically clueless in crafts (he works in IT) and me and him really want to build a simple boat like this. Could you give us some tips/advice on where to start
Thanks for the message, eventually i'll be editing a long version video from start to finish with explanations about the process, but its going to take some time. Cheers
PLEASE NEVER USE A PLYWOOD BUTT BLOCK. It's the weakest joint you can use and makes a hard spot preventing a fair curve. A tapered scarf joint is the strongest but somewhat of a pain to make. BEST alternative is a Payson fiberglass butt joint. You can view them being made on RUclips.
Я что, оклеить швы сначала снаружи удобней? А я чет всегда сначала галтели изнутри, между стяжками делал, потом вытаскивал стяжки. Ну хорошо, смотрим дальше. Плюс за оригинальность. ;)
Your video would have been much more better if it were not fastforwarded . It just doesn't look good. Needs to be slowed down a little bit and needs more detailing.

Wow, beautiful job! I would love to try to make a similar design. Do you think it would work if I divided the width in two?
Qual as dimensões deste barco? Parabéns pela construção está tudo perfeito.edson brasil

Greetings from Barcelona Mr. DIY ! What is the thickness (in mm. please) of the plywood you use? Is it water resistant? Many thanks in advance. 👍 🙏
She's great, but could you post the spec, please? Materials used, sizes & 'finishing products! (Ie. glues, varnish, and so on. Many thanks!
I used 9mm nonmarine plywood, but i would recommend 6mm Marine plywood, this will make the boat a lot lighter and resistant to water infiltrations.

Please !!! dimensions of the Boat !! thank
Curious of the weight
What's the weight capacity? How many adults fit comfortably?

It can hold up to 4 people but its crowded, 3 is comfortable, 2 is optimal.

Hey what is the brown compound you used for sealant for the plywood seams?

@@BackyardBoatsCo I used 5 1/2 but added the foredeck and i did not maximize the panel layouts, in the plans it says 4 1/2 panels should do it
Excellent job! How much did this build cost you?
Thanks, it cost me about 800$
@@HANDIY I know this was from a while ago… but where did you buy your wood?
@@jacobbrownson8277 its just regular 9mm furniture plywood from the local hardware store.

Thanks for the advice, I'll keep it in mind for the future. Its just that Time lapsing is so much easier especially when epoxy is involved.
You can see more detail when you play it back at.25.
