  • NB: This video stops too soon as once again my camera conked out so I will have to buy a new one.
The Central Hydraulic Tower was built in 1863 and used steam to power the lifting of the bridges and docks in Birkenhead docks. The design of the building was based on the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. After the damage left by the blitz in WW2, features such as a large lantern on top of the tower were never replaced and it later closed down.
It was supposed to be brought back into use with the Wirral Waters regeneration project but it has once again been put on hold.
