    James, as someone who learns better by having some level of understanding rather than by pure rote memorization, I prefer learning some simple music theory, to assist with the memorizing. In this case, just the concept of full and half steps between notes makes the playing of consecutive notes, such as A,B,C or D,E,F so much easier- when you must skip a fret and when not to get to the next note. Only need to find the 1st note location, then full step(skip a fret) or half step(no skip) to the next note when playing the 7 note scale.

      He does refer to theory in the beginning at 0:09 . What about instead of a note, or after it's learnt, the chord... C = C, E, G. On low E gives first inversion... E, G, C.

    People need to remember that once they've memorized the E and A string, they're halfway done.
    Both E strings are the same, so all that's left is the D, G, and B.
