- "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)" is an American pop music song, written by John Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas, and sung by Scott McKenzie. The song was produced and released in May 1967 by Phillips and Lou Adler, who used it to promote their Monterey International Pop Music Festival held in June of that year.
John Phillips played guitar on the recording and session musician Gary L. Coleman played orchestra bells and chimes. The bass line of the song was supplied by session musician Joe Osborn. Hal Blaine played drums. The song became one of the best-selling singles of the 1960s in the world, reaching the fourth position on the US charts and the number one spot on the UK charts.
McKenzie's version of the song has been called "the unofficial anthem of the counterculture movement of the 1960s, including the Hippie, Anti-Vietnam War and Flower power movements.

Many feel as you do, wanting to "go back to the good old days". But are past times any better than now ? This point is made in the Bible at Ecclesiastes 7:10 by King Solomon of ancient Israel, which says: "Do not say, “Why were the former days better than these ?” for it is not out of wisdom that you ask this."
Why did Solomon give this advice ? Because he knew that having a realistic view of the past is a valuable aid in coping with the unpleasant situations of the present. Those who yearn for “the good old days” may actually forget that those days were also filled with problems and troubles and that life was never truly ideal. Some things in the past may have been better, but most likely others were not. As Solomon noted, there is no wisdom in unrealistically dwelling on the past, since it is evident that we cannot "turn back the hands of time", since death has been with mankind for some 6,000 years.
Can there be any harm in nostalgically looking to the past ? Yes, if it keeps us from being flexible and adapting to the present or if it prevents us from appreciating the times in which we live and the hope that can be ours, causing us to be as the Israelites who thought of the past, when they remembered being "in the land of Egypt while we were sitting by the pots of meat, while we were eating bread to satisfaction. Now you have brought us out into this wilderness to put this whole congregation to death by famine", which they had only left some 45 days earlier.(Ex 16:3)
They failed to appreciate that God had promised, not only freedom from their slavery to the Egyptians, but a land of their own, "a land flowing with milk and honey" (Num 13:27), so that they could feel "free" to plant crops and enjoy their produce.
But because they continued to "pine away" for the past, continued to murmur, loosing sight of the promise of the land that would supply all their needs and wants, bringing real satisfaction, they were forced to wander in the "wilderness" for 40 years.(Num 14:34)
There is another promise that God, whose personal name is Jehovah, has given that far exceeds the one he gave to the nation of Israel, as seen at Revelation 21: "With that I heard a loud voice from the throne say: “Look ! The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his people. And God himself will be with them. And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away. And the One seated on the throne said: “Look! I am making all things new.” Also he says: “Write, for these words are faithful and true."(Rev 21:3-5)
Sickness, sorrow and death, will be eradicated, so that those who are the "meek" ones (Matt 5:5) will enjoy perfect health, perfect peace, and perfect setting on a paradise earth. It is hard to imagine that happening, but it will be a reality , because "it is impossible for God to lie".(Heb 6:18)
So, with this unbreakable promise, should anyone really long for the past ?

Talk about memories; I was transferred from Guantanmo Bay and 12 yrs on the East Coast to Northern Calif in '69 and couldn't wait to see the Haight-Ashberry area and "hippies". They were mostly gone and the area cleaned up by the time I got there; but, the song and all the other 'Nam era music still bring back memories. Love your version; great as usual.

I was in the Height during the time of the riots. I lived there. Height Asbury wasn't anything like this song, believe me. But, it was an experience that now I'm glad I went through. I was also in Montreal, Canada the Winter Ann Murry came out with "Snow Bird"; worst winter they'd had in 100 years!
