    Has the Hilda Ogden character officially died in corrie? I remember they made an announcement on the show when deidre passed away

    • @mtm4a
      @mtm4a Месяц назад +1

      @ACNC1 - I am not sure, but I think the difference was that Jean Alexander went on to play other characters for many years after she left Corrie in 1987, so relating her real-life demise in 2016 may not have been appropriate to build into the storyline at that belated time.
      Whereas Anne Kirkbride's passing in real life happened only three months after her last appearance in Corrie in October 2014. So she was very much in everyone's thoughts, and the producers/scriptwriters thought it was very appropriate to bring her passing into the storyline, and this was broadcast in July 2015.

    I was lucky enough to meet Violet Carson (Ena Sharples) when I was a 20-year-old bank cashier at a new branch of Barclays Bank in Euston Station. That was soon after the rail terminus was completely renovated and re-opened in 1968.
    Miss Carson cashed a cheque with me (those were the days!), presumably before catching her train to Manchester, and I remember her being a lovely, friendly, and very glamorous lady, full of smiles and compliments!
    In the early 1980s, I managed to acquire the autograph of Liz Dawn (Vera Duckworth) who was making a personal appearance at a disco (then called 'Bangs') at the top of Charing Cross Road, London. A lively, witty lady, much in demand by autograph hunters!
    As a side issue, the Barclays branch at Euston Station (which is now an M & S 'Simply Food' outlet) was one of the first to introduce the original style of cash machine.
    As a cashier, we had to load this machine with packets of brand new One Pound notes (10 per packet), and the machine would operate by means of an arm with a suction pad on the end, which lifted a single packet from a pile within the machine, it swung across and placed it on the 'tray' which the customer would then pull open to retrieve the money! Customers had special vouchers for this purpose - Ten Pounds for every voucher!! Advanced technology in those days!! 😄

    I remember watching the 1st episode on a black and white Bakelite TV ,to my mind the series lost its way when Spider and the dreadful Battersby family were wrote into the series. I stopped watching because it had turned into a Northern version of East Enders! Arguments, nasty scheming back stabbing characters and totally depressing story lines.
    If real life was supposed to be portrayed by Coronation Street post Spider I would have completely lost the will to live. Corro is a dreadful, depressing soap that long ago lost its family appeal.

    Well that was a waste of time, as you never mentioned Elsie Tanner (Pat Phoenix) or her son Dennis ?????

      @dianapugh1534 - Well Diana, I don't think it was a complete waste of time, in my opinion! For me, it revived many nostalgic memories.
      Pat Phoenix is indeed mentioned at 9:47 in the video.
      As for Dennis Tanner, he was played by Philip Lowrie who is still alive, now aged 87. On checking Google, I am reminded that Dennis appeared in the first episode on 9th December 1960, which I remember watching, but was written out a year later. He returned two years later and remained for five years until 1968.
      He returned 43 years later in May 2011, making it the longest any Corrie actor has taken a break, and made it to the Guinness World Records for this reason. He departed in February 2014 but returned for a brief storyline from April to July 2014.
      Wikipedia states that in February 2020, marking the show's 10,000th episode, the character of Dennis Tanner was killed off 'off-screen'.
      I hope this helps with the chronology!

      Certain characters it was a mistake to write them out like Martha Longhurst who 'died' over a glass of milk stout in the Snug. Dennis Tanner and Billy Walker also. Ernest Bishop upset the producers, for some reason and never worked again. Also the other McDonald twin who supposedly 'moved to Sheffield'.
