      Thanks a lot, man! By the way, great job with the plating you did for the plane restoration you did a couple months back! I didn't have time to write the large comment I wanted to, but I know how long it takes to properly clean items (especially larger items like that) for plating, and it takes quite a lot of dedication to get the job done right. Thanks a lot for watching!

    • @Austeration
      @Austeration 2 года назад +1

      @@randomrestoration6858 you are very welcome. Thanks for your comment about the plane. That plating did my head in. It certainly was a challenge on that one piece that proved troublesome.
      Every time I watch one of your videos I get inspired to look at doing something with a set of Brass candle holders that Mount to the front of a piano. I just don't know what to do with them as they have been in the family for many years.

    • @randomrestoration6858
      @randomrestoration6858  2 года назад +1

      Yeah plating is very frustrating, especially when 98% of the piece successfully plates and you have to redo the entire thing.
      That's a tricky one since I know many people (including viewers on RUclips) would prefer to keep something like that in their original condition to preserve their history, unless of course they're in really grim shape haha, but it's also great to be able to see how they looked when they were new!

    • @Austeration
      @Austeration 2 года назад +1

      @@randomrestoration6858 yes I know what you mean. I always struggle with keeping sentimental things original or restoring them. It's a hard decision to make hence why I haven't proceeded with the candle holders. But you do inspire me to do something.

      I appreciate it! I usually find these hardware items either on websites that specialize in architectural salvage, or in many instances eBay. • @randomrestoration6858
      @randomrestoration6858  2 года назад +2

      Thanks as always, Mark! I've been practicing my swing for just the occasion hahaha. Generally the shanks (shafts) of the door knobs were the same size for one design - What I mean by that is that the jumbo entrance backplate I showed on camera would have the same sized door knob (and) shank size as this small backplate. I would say the main reason collars were cast separately was because it would allow the backplate to be easily sanded smooth after casting. If they cast the collar and backplate as one piece it would greatly increase the amount of time it took to sand them since the collar would get in the way. Thanks a lot for watching!

    Love it! Poor little knob, it didn’t ask to be there. And it never will be again! I was curious if you had any thought process to the way you add the lacquer, why you add the black paint after? Wouldn’t it protect the black paint? Mind you, I’ve never done a restoration so I’ve no idea, just curious.

    • @randomrestoration6858
      @randomrestoration6858  2 года назад +2

      Hahaha it should have known better! In my video "Rusty 1890s Foot Bolt Restoration" I did do lacquer over the black paint, but I prefer not doing it that way since the black isn't as crisp looking and turns more of a grey when in direct lighting. Since the black paint is only in the recessed areas your hands don't really come in contact with it as much as the lacquered raised areas, and I suspect the lacquer would wear through before any of the black paint - Though I haven't done enough real world use with these items yet, so I could be wrong haha.
