I laughed so hard that y’all were shocked the utilities turned off 😂😂 that’s definitely a good lesson to learn. When you buy a home you will most likely have to set up utilities on your own. Usually you would call a few days or weeks in advance and tell them your move-in date so that it isn’t turned on too early or too late. Also - it’s pretty typical that water and electric are provided by two different companies. Y’all are learning a lot of good lessons early on haha! So happy for you!!!
Yes, I was also kind of surprised their realtor didn’t give them a move-in checklist. Most do that to help out their clients, since it is overwhelming for first-time homebuyers to know to do all those things. Hopefully their realtor will see this tip for their future clients, haha 😄

Even though we move lots it is always a nice touch, as your head is spinning with everything that needs to get done no matter how many times you do it, haha 🤣 I bet their family didn’t even think to mention it to them, but yes, it’s a super thoughtful and easy “value add” thing for realtors to do to help out their clients ☺️

Advice from a realtor!! I’m sure yours told you, but another thing you should definitely do is CHANGE ALL THE LOCKS! Having a locksmith come to the house is inexpensive and it’s so important to change out the keys, because you never know who the old owner gave a key to, etc. there may also be other things you need to switch to your name besides utilities- like the security system service! I’m so so happy for you guys- the house is going to come together so well and be a wonderful place to raise your little babe!

Congratulations! That’s so frustrating with your utilities. The people that sold us our house gave me a list of all the companies/utilities I’d need to transfer to my name. I called a week ahead of time and gave them the turn on date. If I’m ever a seller I’ll def be doing this for the new home owners!

I'm impressed that Matt got that box spring put together in about an hours time. I just put the top bunk on my children's bunk bed together yesterday and it took ALL DAY. Had it set up as the bottom bunk being a bed by itself, but about time for my youngest to switch from toddler bed to big kid bed. Thought I would never get it done. Oh, and my only tool was an Allen wrench. I've got so many Allen wrenches from different furniture pieces and sets. Kids chairs, changing tables, crib, beds, and some toys.

Utilities are so different county to county, not even state to state really. Some counties do all of the utilities together, others are all separate. When you buy a house, you are supposed to set up utilities ahead of time, shoot even when you rent you have to set up electricity in a lot of places. Lots of lessons learned this vlog! 😬 the house is really coming together, so happy for you guys!

That sucks with the utilities. When we moved, the house we bought was empty so we were able to transfer gas/electric over before we moved in. The houses in America seem so much nicer than where we are in the UK. We don’t do open plan so much, so everything feels smaller, unless you buy a huge house. What I love, is that you bought a house you can stay in for as long as you want, without the fear of your family growing out of it quickly.

We made the same mistake with our utilities when we bought our first house! Rentals they move it over but when you buy a house it’s not changed and the previous owners just shut it off. Wish that was a more commonly known thing. 😂 Love your guy’s new house!!

Ah to be in our 20's again! Fun times! Welcome to AZ! Phoenix area has been home to us for almost 22 years now since we came here for college! Crazy that you were in the Midwest when I started watching you in 2020 and now you could potentially live down the road from us! Every time we have ever moved, we had to set up all the utilites ahead of time to be turned on in our name on our move in date. So sorry you didn't know that! If you ever move out then you let the utilites know when they need to turn it off for your name/account.

I don't know if you really wanted an answer, but here in southeast Michigan we have electric and gas combined, while water/sewer is a separate thing. Then there's waste management, for trash and recycling pickup. I had no clue about having to call and get things turned on when we bought our house. Thankfully, my husband did. He took care of so much while I worked my 8hr afternoon shift and stressed about not being there to help.
Over in the uk you don't get switched off, all you need to do is call gas and electricity majority are the same company and let them know you've moved it. Crazy how they turn off everything 😱. It is actually normal for the new owners to have to call and set up utilities. It’s also normal to have one company manage energy and another manager water. At least here in NC
In Arizona you have electric, water and gas (if your house has gas) all separate bills. If you have APS for electric they have an app so you can see detailed energy usage and you can pay your bill through the app.

YIKES. Yeah, it differs by state. Here in Nevada when you move into your new home it is up to you to turn on all utilities and put everything in your name.

You guys have to set up all your own utilities before you move in and water will be different from electric which are different from oil and it also depends if you have a septic tank or if your house is lined up to the city etc etc etc

My husband and I moved to NY from AZ last year. We had a house downtown Phoenix! So when we sold our house in Phoenix it was such an easy process, just a few signatures. However in NY, there were three lawyers involved for the whole transaction. It was absurd! Haha but you know what!? Our lawyer organized the transfer of utilities from the seller to us. So now I kinda can see the benefits of having a lawyer after watching this 😅😂
The SAME things with power and water happened to us on closing day and the following days. I’m not sure how Arizona works, but also check in to see if wastewater/sewage management is a separate service as well! Where we live water and sewage are also separate and our sewage was shut off two weeks into moving because we were incorrectly told they were together.
Abbie I know how you feel 27 years ago we did the same thing, we bought our first when I was with our first child. Our closing date was at my 31 week. It was summer time here in Canada, my co workers help me with the move, my parents came down later to set up the nursery. So I was not set up like you before my Daughter was born. The set up of the house was done after she was born. Congrats on your new house.
We have a separate water/sewer, Gas, Electric. And although the water/sewer is managed by the same company, depending if you are living in the city or township makes a difference on who you call.

I had to chuckle and groan while watching this because my husband and I just bought our first house and ran into a lot of the same snags as you guys! We didn't have hot water for over a week because of an issue with our water heater, we have a 2 year old and I am pregnant too, haha 🤦🏻♀️ Being homeowners has a steep learning curve, but it eventually gets easier after some trial and error!
There are so many things you have to do when buying your first home. So many things people didn’t tell us about when we bought our first home. Haha! We transferred all the bills to our name but we didn’t know our house had gas heating so we never transferred that. A month after we moved in, we didn’t have heat. It was March in Washington. We were so cold and we had a 1-month-old baby. Luckily, the gas company came in right away to turn it back on. Hahaha!! So many things we had to learn on our own.
In Idaho, the water company is separate from electric. Sewage is separate, and gas is separate. I think we had similar issues when we moved into our house.
Yes it’s normal to have a different water and electricity company. Also trash too! They had that in Hawaii too. Think that’s pretty normal! Cute how excited you guys were for this house.

Yes, it is normal for the previous owners to stop utility services and for the new owners to set it up. Usually you can set it up before you move in or tell the company your move in date so they can start utilities on that date. Hope you got the water turned back on!

In South Africa we get power outages ALL THE TIME! Up to three times a day for 2-4 hours🤷🏻♀️ it's called load shedding. They do this to save electricity 🙄🤣. And also congratulations on your baby boy💙

When we bought, we were told we needed to call the utilities within 24hrs of closing or they would be automatically shut off. Sounds like a miss from your escrow officer. They typically will give you a utilities list and tell you the rules.
In Texas, water, electricity and gas are all different companies and it’s to to you as the new owners to change it over into your name since you have to give your SSN and a down payment. It’s not yo to the sellers if the home. But they should of told y’all that since y’all are new to this and all.

I don't know if you really wanted an answer, but here in southeast Michigan we have electric and gas combined, while water/sewer is a separate thing. Then there's waste management, for trash and recycling pickup. I had no clue about having to call and get things turned on when we bought our house. Thankfully, my husband did. He took care of so much while I worked my 8hr afternoon shift and stressed about not being there to help.
Over in the uk you don't get switched off, all you need to do is call gas and electricity majority are the same company and let them know you've moved it. Crazy how they turn off everything 😱. It is actually normal for the new owners to have to call and set up utilities. It’s also normal to have one company manage energy and another manager water. At least here in NC
In Arizona you have electric, water and gas (if your house has gas) all separate bills. If you have APS for electric they have an app so you can see detailed energy usage and you can pay your bill through the app.

YIKES. Yeah, it differs by state. Here in Nevada when you move into your new home it is up to you to turn on all utilities and put everything in your name.

You guys have to set up all your own utilities before you move in and water will be different from electric which are different from oil and it also depends if you have a septic tank or if your house is lined up to the city etc etc etc

My husband and I moved to NY from AZ last year. We had a house downtown Phoenix! So when we sold our house in Phoenix it was such an easy process, just a few signatures. However in NY, there were three lawyers involved for the whole transaction. It was absurd! Haha but you know what!? Our lawyer organized the transfer of utilities from the seller to us. So now I kinda can see the benefits of having a lawyer after watching this 😅😂
The SAME things with power and water happened to us on closing day and the following days.
I’m not sure how Arizona works, but also check in to see if wastewater/sewage management is a separate service as well! Where we live water and sewage are also separate and our sewage was shut off two weeks into moving because we were incorrectly told they were together.
Abbie I know how you feel 27 years ago we did the same thing, we bought our first when I was with our first child. Our closing date was at my 31 week. It was summer time here in Canada, my co workers help me with the move, my parents came down later to set up the nursery. So I was not set up like you before my Daughter was born. The set up of the house was done after she was born. Congrats on your new house.
We have a separate water/sewer, Gas, Electric. And although the water/sewer is managed by the same company, depending if you are living in the city or township makes a difference on who you call.

Omg the same thing happened with me and my husband when we moved into our new house they delivered our couches 2 hours earlier than was scheduled. I called and complained but didn't call back to apologize so I applaud you Abby 😂 I'm also 6 months pregnant and following your journey of pregnancy and all the videos have been so amazing to me I feel like we're in this together! I had to chuckle and groan while watching this because my husband and I just bought our first house and ran into a lot of the same snags as you guys! We didn't have hot water for over a week because of an issue with our water heater, we have a 2 year old and I am pregnant too, haha 🤦🏻♀️ Being homeowners has a steep learning curve, but it eventually gets easier after some trial and error!

There are so many things you have to do when buying your first home. So many things people didn’t tell us about when we bought our first home. Haha! We transferred all the bills to our name but we didn’t know our house had gas heating so we never transferred that. A month after we moved in, we didn’t have heat. It was March in Washington. We were so cold and we had a 1-month-old baby. Luckily, the gas company came in right away to turn it back on. Hahaha!! So many things we had to learn on our own.

In Idaho, the water company is separate from electric. Sewage is separate, and gas is separate. I think we had similar issues when we moved into our house.
Yes it’s normal to have a different water and electricity company. Also trash too! They had that in Hawaii too. Think that’s pretty normal! Cute how excited you guys were for this house.

It does make me kind of curious though if y’all never had to do that for apartments!? Even when I moved into my apartment, I had to make sure to call Duke energy and have them set up an account in my name. They were even late and I had to spend a night with no electricity 🙄

Yes, it is normal for the previous owners to stop utility services and for the new owners to set it up. Usually you can set it up before you move in or tell the company your move in date so they can start utilities on that date. Hope you got the water turned back on!

Utilities get shut off as soon as the previous owners move out. Happened to us when we purchased our home 7 years ago without warning.

In South Africa we get power outages ALL THE TIME! Up to three times a day for 2-4 hours🤷🏻♀️ it's called load shedding. They do this to save electricity 🙄🤣. And also congratulations on your baby boy💙

When we bought, we were told we needed to call the utilities within 24hrs of closing or they would be automatically shut off. Sounds like a miss from your escrow officer. They typically will give you a utilities list and tell you the rules.
In Texas, water, electricity and gas are all different companies and it’s to to you as the new owners to change it over into your name since you have to give your SSN and a down payment. It’s not yo to the sellers if the home. But they should of told y’all that since y’all are new to this and all.
