I was raised on Belafonte’s Calypso version. My dad and I would dance around the house together. But, changing the song to a ballade works very well for Mr. Rowels unique vocal talents! 🥰🤙🤙🤙
I got my driver's license in 1970 and this song was on my playlist over and over till my cassette failed then 50 years later I'm playing it again in Ravensthorpe Western Australia

Great song, great singer whose voice was unique that possessed similarities to Billy Eckstien and Engelbert Humperdinck. He gives great emotion and feeling to every song he sings. Great singer, Great Artist. ❤
I did a summer job as the student doctor at Te Puia Springs Hospital on the east coast. In the evening the nurses would gather in the bar at the hotel , play guitars , and sing. Cheryl Moana Marie was a favorite , but the second verse was "Share your banana with me"! that got the young men in the bars attention!!
Saw him live in a small dinner show in Rotorua while travelling NZ. Fantastic show and a great guy. Talked with him in the bar afterwards for half an hour. What a strong voice. Easily rivals Jones and Humperdink
I remember John singing in the pubs around New Zealand . . . this was one of his most famous songs . . . Some thing about the natural voice . . . of the maori. Memories of the pub singing in Rotorua . . . spellbinding.
WOW! I can't believe my 'ears'. I've thought of this song on and off, here and there, over many many years. (Heard it and loved it, late 60's I think.) I never ever seem to run into it or find it on the web or anywhere in later years/decades. I actually began to think to myself, 'Did I ever really hear this song or just imagine it?' Yet I had this melody firmly in my mind; so I knew it existed, somehow, somewhere. And low and behold, FINALLY, I run into it here! Wonderful(!)...to hear this beautiful song and great voice of John Rowles once again. Thank you, ever so much! I'll listen to it again and again!
I am 83 and been listening carefully to singers since I was 7 years old! A few have got real talent! John's voice is relatively new to me, but wow! I think he has a GREAT voice! A bit of Tom & Englebert! What a plus too for a minority ethnic group! Everyone, all people have tallent, if the narrowminded of this world will only open there limited minds! Bless you John! Keep it up! ( your 77 now, I am 83 and still performing !
Probably the most popular song this Kiwi Elvis ever recorded.I am personally most surprised and disappointed that he didn't enjoy a more international career and recognition, but...there it is!...Great job there Sir John Rowles...Thanks for the memories...😊
Alex...Not bad, Same song, but no girls. I agree, Rowles is a looker...if I be looking for dick, I'd take a shot. Ha. Still, he's no Elvis...I've been doing Elvis since the 1950s, and Elvis is to this day a big part of my sex life. Actually the old man is the only dick I've wanted since the early 60s. Like I said, Rowles is hunky enough, but I'd compare him to Wayne Newton...remember him? Me and the old man saw Newton, live, at his place in Vegas...and we met him. but that's a long story in itself. Briefly, he liked my ass. Ha. If you want to cry, try Wayne's Remembering!!! Thanks again, Hon. Love hearing from you.
Back in the day, here in Columbus, Ohio, we were blessed with an a.m. station which played lesser-known songs (Whistlin' Jack Smith, Fleugal Knights, Humperdink's "My Marie", et al) along with Top 20s. My Mom LOVED this song, bought it for her birthday.
I saw this great singer many times at the Royal Hawaiian hotel in Waikiki, such a wonderful voice, person and great entertainer. Luckily, we were first table at stage and he asked my 11 year old daugter sing a song with him, and she did.
Great song great singer ,never heard much of him in Britain pity ,but there again when I browse through U Tube there are loads of songs that are great and never heard them on British radio. for example I only ever heard one Don Cherry song which is Band Of Gold, yet he has recorded some fabulous songs .that's why I regret being born in Britain poor taste in music. I wish I'd been born in the USA.great music especially in the fifties I'm glad I was a teenager then.

Couldn't agree more. JR should have been an international star. Maybe too much competition from already established singers.
MrLeedebt Apparently he had some success in the UK. Only yesterday l read a comment from a UK fan, putting in a list with Cliff Richard and Engelbert.
@@allymayful Well, he had the same manager as Cliff. Peter Gormley was his name.
@@MrLeedebt No, he made the mistake of not staying in in England. Opted for sunny Hawaii and the lure of more money.
