Forbidden Planet is a jewel for all generations. My three year old grand-daughter and I watched this movie together and she fell in love with Robby the Robot. To hear her laugh when I say "I am monitored to respond to the name Paw Paw"... her nickname for me...is heartwarming. I have bought her a 14" walking and talking Robby the Robot for Christmas...I can't wait to see her face when she opens the box....my wife has held me back from giving it to her for a month now. Forbidden Planet will continue to be a favorite of movie watchers for generations to come.

That's such a great story Alan. I saw the movie in 1956 when I was only seven and even though many of the great ideas and concepts of FB escaped me I still loved it. I have a Robby right here on my desk and it talks.
Have fun at christmas with your daughter. When she is older you can talk about the Tempest and other ideas related to the ID and the Krell. Krellmusic7 in Poughkeepsie

I grew up near Boston. You could count on this movie being shown at least once a year and, trust me, I saw it every single time. I don't know how they did it. But when the Krell monster attacks, we never did get a very good view of it. Years later I saw an 'uncut' version and was surprised that I could see the whole monster. Also missing were the deaths of the two crewmen at the hands of Krell monster.
Some people have said they was no decent scifi until 2001. Not so. In the fifties we had Forbidden Planet, War of the Worlds, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Destination: Moon, The Thing, The Day the Earth Stood Still and Them. All with excellent themes and visual effects worthy of their day.

FP seems to be a film whose cultural impact feels immeasurable.
It is both a reflection of its era and so far ahead of it in many ways.
I've never cared for its plot, but its artistic merits of sight and sound
    make its contributions invaluable.
    A movie masterpiece.
Now to get those haunting sounds out of my head over the next couple of days and I'll be fine...

The original Star Trek pilot ('The Cage') definitely took a lot of inspiration from this movie. The production design and the crew dynamics of the Enterprise have a similar 'vibe'. 'F.P.' holds up well, since even the limitations of the technology and the stylistic approach have charm now.

Great movie...Star Trek before Star Trek. This is one of the films I saw as a child that began my love for sci fi. Cutting edge music score , set designs & FX. Great background music that you are using, "Trips" by Topher Mohr & Alexa Elena...Love it! I recall hearing this on your "Rollerball" episode.

Taking nothing away from the other great fictional robots, I go with Robby. He may have popularized "Robby" as a nickname for "Robert", among other achievements. Robby was also in a commercial shilling oldie records. What was classic is Robby having lines that are memorable and funny when Robby is just being Robby. Forbidden Planet may have hurt science fiction movies in the short term. Being a box office disappointment apparently made studios reluctant to go big budget with Science Fiction movies. The uniforms and space ship footage were also used in other Science Fiction projects. The car showed up in an episode of "The Twilight Zone".

A follow up... my Mom suggested that rather than remaking the movie, they should give it a polish, like Star Trek: The Original Series... it would require a crew of artists who really love the movie for what it is, with no desire to truly change it just because. Matte paintings replaced with more realistic horizons, the depths of the Krell facilities, and the Id monster given a less cartoony appearance. Maybe a newer soundtrack heavily inspired by the original, maybe including newer instruments like the Blaster Beam... but still the original film. No changes to the people, to Robbie, or to the things that make it so iconic. If the people working on it had the love and passion the ST:TOS Remastering crew had, it could be impressive.

To me the view of Altier 4 (sp?) On the view screen holds up well. The haze of the atmosphere and the cloud cover remind me a lot of the first pictures of Mars taken by our orbiters.
Also the uniforms worn by the crew had a life of their own appearing in several movies and TV shows including the Twilight Zone.

"Would sixty gallons be sufficient?" is a line I use at every opportunity. Earl Holliman provided some nice comic relief (as well as being a nod to the character Stephano from The Tempest) and would go on to be in the pilot episode of The Twilight Zone.

The director probably wanted the audience to imagine the appearance of the ETs. It's wise to sometimes, not show or explain everything. This adds to the aura and mystery of the presentation. Stanley Kubrick followed this philosophy with his incredible, beautiful 2001: A Space Odyssey. The only critic I have is the woman are nowhere near the beauty and they should have short skirts like Anne.

Okay, I'll say it, FB is the greatest SF movie of it's time and one of the best All Time. Personally, I put at #2 on my own top 10 list, after Alien, and just a hair above The Day the Earth Stood Still. It's influence on the genre even to this day, is unmistakable. I have heard it said that FB was the best Star Trek movie ever made. Not sure I agree, but I understand the point. Honestly, it wouldn't take very much editing of the script to put this story in the ST universe. Thanks for reviewing this one...

To be fair though, I still remember the first time I saw the film in a theater in 1979, during the opening sequence as the camera is panning through the corridors leading up to the cryo chamber, I remember thinking this reminded me of a gothic castle instead of a space ship.

Seeing as I grew up in the 60s watching both LOST IN SPACE and STAR TREK, it still blows my mind that I somehow never saw this film until around 1980, when I clearly recognized its influences on both shows. What also gets me is how, apart from the cook, all the other characters are so "stiff"-- like they were on ST:TNG. Thankfully, the characters on STAR TREK were a lot more relaxed.
If you wanna see Leslie Nielsen give what I think is his most relaxed and realistic acting performance, see the low-budget spy thrill NIGHT TRAIN TO PARIS.

I have heard other commentators say that the one thing the filmmakers of Forbidden Planet could have done was to show the crew of the C57D ship making their escape before the planet disintegrated. Instead of segueing directly to the crew onboard the ship as it reaches its safety point of 100,000,000 miles in space. But bringing the movie in at about an 1 1/2 hour is also a good benchmark for not wearing out the audience. Since it was made for general audiences.

As I've said before: if someone is doing a remake of a movie, what are they bringing to the story that is interesting and appropriate. Can they show that they are not mooching off of the work of better writers and movie makers?
OK, that's not exactly what I've said before, but it is the latest best articulation of my opinion.

😂Always a fun movie, though the Krell doorway bit doesn't seem to hold up to scrutiny: what do OUR doorways say about what we look like in shape? That we were spam on legs? And what about our submarine doors? Very very minor nitpick. A good movie for MST3K, THE MOVIE, too. But with them you never know what movie's going to yield the biggest laughs and most jokes. You'd think Plan 9 would be their Citizen Kane but not so. I'd vote for a nameless biker movie (wish I could think of its name) and I Was A Teenage Werewolf. Werewolf is the winner because it plays off Michael Landon and the recent botched arrest and sudden freeing of Richard Jewell by the FBI. And I remembered it as being both scary (to a kid) and actually good. But they found an untapped gold mine of humor, with a lot of help from both the FBI and Michael Landon's later two series.
I read something not long ago about how you absolutely had to have music in a horror movie to cover the silliness on display, which made me think of sf background music. I loved the original Star Trek tv show's background music, which gave the show a sweep and majesty it might not have earned w/out the music. Wondering if you felt sf movies have to have musical scores?
Also wondering if you're ever going to do SLEEPER or is Woody Allen banned from RUclips? I say banned a bit facetiously but not by much. Are his films too literate for YT reactors (not reviewers) because you can find nearly every Mel Brooks movie done to death. You probably don't remember but in the mid-seventies Mel Brooks was considered a junkyard sale next to Woody's Tiffany's. Brooks was the lowest common denominator of anyone making comedies. His constant Jewish references of course put him in comparison to Woody. And that's where any comparisons ended. I think he kept putting out masterpieces until this century at least, and I believe Annie Hall was the first comedy to get the Best Picture since It Happened One Night. I won't say Sleeper is as funny but I laughed a lot. And it IS science fiction.
And do you remember SlaughterHouse5? I loved that one. Not a comedy but very good and strangely forgotten, especially since it came from Vonnegut. Also science fiction, though pretty light on the science part and deeper on the social satire and war horror.
Anyway, I'm still lobbying for the unfortunately-titled I Married A Monster From Outer Space, with its hints of communism, which I don't buy, and its more compelling hints at homosexuality, inescapable with Tom Tryon in the lead. But people are free to insert their own "other" into a movie that says you can never really know your spouse until you live day to day with them. They might be ______________for all you know.
And Forbidden Planet will always be beautiful to look at, like Black Narcissus.

A prequel might be very interesting, but only if it focused much more on the Krell. Either while they still lived leading up to their overnight self-extinction, or from the point when Morbius, archeologically, first discovers them. The handling of a Krell oriented story offerers fascinating potential, but, more of an opportunity to screw that up should it typically lack imagination.

I do love this movie. It's iconic, and for me it still holds up. The Krell city, the C-57D, the Monster from the Id, and Robby are of course remembered and used as inspiration to this day, but I think it was that "Forbidden Planet" has something to say that gives it it's staying power. Science, ambition, authority, sexuality and the control of sexuality, and the darker impulses in us all are what the film is talking about, and I think it's applicability to our lives remains. The monster is in all of us.
For me, Anne Francis stole the movie, her beauty and personality shine compared to jealous male leads and the crew of whitebread, grey-clad crewmen that resemble nothing so much as toy soldiers deployed from a toybox.
I don't want a remake. Give "Forbidden Planet" a remaster/polish and re-release on the big screen and I will pay to see it again.

As long as they would stay true to what follows, which now a days is hard for Hollywood to do.. They would likely make Morbius a chick and make here gay….
