  • In today's video we are super excited to be able to finally test and review one of the most popular lightweight tents in budget category - Naturehike Mongar 2 person tent. This tent immediately reminded us of our MSR Elixir only with a slightly different frame, instead of two poles, this tent has a one pole frame. We are quite sure this tent can have a lot of fans since its price is not too high and comfort and weight are very decent. Of course we won't compare it to the ultra light tents, but for the comfort level and solidity of materials it provides it seems to be quite lightweight for two people. We will see what's in a kit, set up this tent in the wild, share all the features and important characteristics we found and our final thoughts about it. So without further a do let's get into the review!

    I've used this tent for 2 camping seasons. It suits my needs perfectly. When I am camping solo it is very spacious and I have no trouble with storage. I did purchase the vestibule. I take it when I have company. It provides all the necessary storage needed. I've had nothing get wet in the rain in the tents integral vestibule. Nor any leaking in the couple of long soaking rains I experienced. I am very happy I purchased the Mongar 2. Glad your video confirmed my experience. Thank you. Very nice job.

      Thanks for sharing you experience with it! That was one of our only concerns about this tent - quite narrow vestibules. Glad to hear you were able to get around it. Overall a very nice tent for the price!

    I almost bought that tent a couple years ago to upgrade from my Quechua QuickHiker 2, but in the end went with it's brother, the Naturehike Tagar 2. We live in Scotland so it's always wet and damp, and there's lots of midges, so pitching a tent super quick and in the rain was important to us. The Tagar is a 1 layer construction so it will get more condensation, but in Scotland it makes little difference most of the year. It's also smaller than the Mognar but packs smaller so it's good for our bikepacking trips as it fits onto the bicycle easier leaving room for other gear. There's technically 2 vestibules, but only 1 door, you can access the other vestibule from the inside and it's only for storage space, which is a bit of a strange design idea if you ask me. Making it into another door wouldn't cost much more money or weight. That said the packed tent is below 1.3kg so I still struggle to find an actual upgrade even after 3 years... well... an upgrade that doesn't cost $700 + shipping + tax like the Durston X-Mid Pro 2 :D

      Yeah, we are with you on that. We stick to our MSR Elixir for the longest time, not being able to find an alternative and this Mongar tent came the closest to it so far. Would love to get our hands on Hubba Hubba one day, it's been our dream for the longest time, like Durston in your case:) It is simply hard to afford and spend so much money on the tent. Well, maybe we get lucky and someone will just gift it to us one day, haha.
      We know about Tagar 2 for a while and its weight is hard to beat, we were also quite attracted to it because of that and almost got it. But then our comfort needs came first and we switched to Mongar this time. Comfort/weight dilemma is always with us:) But we also do prefer having two entrances and vestibules for gear and just simple convenience. So it's a huge deal for us. But at the same time if it will be a short trip in warm conditions some comfort can be sacrificed for weight. For the longer trips it is not the same.

    Hi. Nice review. I think this is a very good budget tent. I have the Naturehike Windriver 2p and is similar to the Mongar tent. Held up in strong winds and rain so far with no issues. I also had the Cloud Up 2p tent which is also lither than the mongar by a pound or a pound and a half or so. But has only one door. The NatureHike Nebula 2p is also a nice sturdier tent but more expensive. Could be used in lighter winter conditions. Good to see you both again. Subscribed long time ago. 😊👍

      Hi, Thanks for sharing your experience! It's nice to hear from you too. It seems like you have had many different tents from the company, it's cool. We were eyeing the Cloud Up 2 as well because of it being so popular and much lighter too. But the entrance and one vestibule put us off. Windriver and Nebula are new to us, Naturehike does have a lot of options and by testing now one of their tents we may want to try out more because we liked it quite a lot. Now we think about bringing this tent with us for November but are not sure whether we will feel comfortable or not in the meshed inner.

    It’s a great tent for spring to autumn, had one for 3 years now and it has a decent amount of space and good vestibule room on both sides too. Be certain to have the cross pole situated above the main pole, not underneath it. It is possible to buy a four season 3FUL or Flames Creed 4 season inner.

    • @WalkingNatureWorld
      @WalkingNatureWorld  8 месяцев назад

      It's good to know that you had a nice experience with it, we are just starting out. Thinking about taking it with us this November but a bit on the fence about how warm and protected we are going to feel. We are so used to our MSR Elixir:)

      Do you mean you can attach the inner tent of a different company to this Naturehike?

    • @freeforester1717
      @freeforester1717 8 месяцев назад +2

      @@WalkingNatureWorld Inthink that providing you have good insulation under your pad, and good quality sleeping bags, the mesh is not such a big problem, in fact is helps greatly to dissipate condensation; as babies, we were well wrapped up in the pram, then the pram was left in a covered area outside, even in winter time. The cold air does not harm, provided you are insulated, but this isn’t really the function of a four season inner, it is beneficial mostly in higher wind scenarios.

    • @WalkingNatureWorld
      @WalkingNatureWorld  8 месяцев назад

      @@freeforester1717 That sounds very reasonable! Definetely the wind needs to be taken into consideration also, not only the temperature. Have to experiement with it more in different scenarios☺

    Had this tent on a biketrip to Nordkapp and than down to Greece , over 150 times pitched up,no problems so far.Storm, rain and hail,the full show.
    Only downside is the full mesh inner tent, it is just to windy inside.
    I would recomend the "StarRiver"tent it has a more closed inner tent.

      It seems like you had an extense experience with this tent already, thank you for sharing! We also had concerns about the full mesh tent at first, we prefer a bit less mesh, esp for three season use. Star River is another popular option and it'd be great to test it out some day.

    Very similar also to one another MSR Hubba copy: Warg Midi 2.
    I chose the Warg, instead of this Naturehike, last year, due to color and inside pockets. But, the rest is the same in both.

    • @WalkingNatureWorld
      @WalkingNatureWorld  8 месяцев назад

      It's the first time when we hear about this tent. It does look very similar indeed but a bit of different pole structure and has more solid parts. Do you find it easy to assemble?

    • @mako5708
      @mako5708 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@WalkingNatureWorld I can compare the MSR Hubba2 with the Warg Midi 2: Yes, the assembly is easy I think and very similar for both tents. I used to Warg during my 2-week hike on GR20 with my gf and next year we will take it to TMB hike.

    • @WalkingNatureWorld
      @WalkingNatureWorld  8 месяцев назад

      @@mako5708 So do you actually prefer Warg Midi over MSR Hubba? How do you find it in colder windier conditions? We are afraid there will be too much air passing through due to the amount of mesh in this Naturehike.

    • @mako5708
      @mako5708 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@WalkingNatureWorld Well... I would say both are very similar. Also Warg has just a mesh inner, so a bit from the wind can get inside when its windy but for us it was never an issue cause we had enough warm down sleeping bags. Of course it is definitely not a winter tent. But it did hold strong during one heavier wind/rain storm on the GR20 hike.
      I chose Warg mainly cause is considerably cheaper (in Slovakia for ~200 Eur) instead of MSR Hubba for ~500 Eur.

    • @WalkingNatureWorld
      @WalkingNatureWorld  8 месяцев назад

      Thanks for sharing! Appreciate all the info. We tend to be quite cold on the windy days in autumn and of course bringing the warmer sleeping bag is a must then. But having the higher inner walls also helps.

    • @WalkingNatureWorld

      Shoe is convenient but sometimes the peg can be so spiky that it can destroy the rubber sole of shoes. We wanted to test Star River 2 for some time now too.

    I want to buy another tent (yes another tent because there is no thing as too many tents😊) and I between this one or the Forclaz Mt500.. The Forclaz is heavier but seems to be well made.

    • @WalkingNatureWorld
      @WalkingNatureWorld  7 месяцев назад

      That is for sure😃 We can't have enough tents for our different needs and to test various types is so tempting too. We actually also surprised ourselves by how much we liked this Mongar, it seems to be quite comparable in terms of quality to Forclaz MT500. Of course the Forclaz is long known brand and its quality is tested during many years. Hope you enjoy the tent you choose and good luck in making these difficult choices😊

      Naturehike makes some tents in a couple versions, some with side-skirts for winter use. Also think Lanshan or one of the other budget-ish companies makes interchangable mesh or solid inners, maybe 3F UL.

    • @WalkingNatureWorld
      @WalkingNatureWorld  8 месяцев назад +2

      Thanks for the comment! We haven't researched into that topic but it seems like 3F UL gear has some. They have another Naturehike Nebula 2 that according to the photos can even withstand some snow and seems more protected. We are also always hesitant about solid mesh interiors even though we live in Spain:)

      The naturehike star river should work well for that use case. I have both and I'd always use the star river if I know the temperature will go below 10C

      @WalkingNatureWorld  8 месяцев назад

      @@v1d3n Thanks for the comment, appreciate the info! As we are thinking now about bringing it with us for November but not sure about how windy it will be and how well it will hold up, especially if it's going ot be colder. But it is not likely the temperature is going to drop lower than 12 degrees at night. Have you used it in high winds? Did you find that there was too much air passing though?

    • @v1d3n
      @v1d3n 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@WalkingNatureWorld I think 12C should be fine, also lower is okay if it's not windy. If it's windy it gets a bit breezy in the tent which is fine with temperatures above 10C but if it goes down to 0-5C this can feel a bit uncomfortable around the face while sleeping.
      I must say that I had a similar issue with the cloud-up 3 though which actually has higher sides all around except for the door. But since the head is at the dore which is big and only mesh I had a cold breeze coming in at 3C this October which I think would have been better with the StarRiver where the fabric is also higher in the doors.
      With your expected temperatures and with
      good sleeping bags it should be fine though.
      Where are you heading for?
