If you're having trouble sliding barrel over rings try compressing the rings with a hose clamp, slide barrel past rings and unscrew the clamp. I use this method on motorcycle engines and it works well for me

I have a standard 602cc and was considering upgrading to a 652cc with a similar kit. Apparently it should increase the 29 bhp to 34 bhp (a 20% increase) but I'm not sure if this would be a noticeable difference. Thoughts?

Ha, mine just arrived in the post, going to fit it next week, waiting on some tools to make the job easier. One thing I can tell you is Burton no longer ship these with the piston rings pre-installed, so I'm having to learn on the internet to do that. Thought about getting the kit for a while, never taken an engine apart so it should be a fun learning experience.

Cheers, thanks for the response! Please post your experience and how well it performs when your able to drive. I’m in the same boat, never have taken an engine apart and was considering Burton’s kit. Friends have swapped the 602cc with Visa engine which is similar to 652cc and didn’t notice much of a difference which is why I’m apprehensive. Again, thanks for the info!

@@nickgarciaman Back for an update, finally got the car running today. Putting it together was harder than expected but obviously not insurmountable. What I found when taking apart the engine was a whole lot of other parts that hadn't been taken off since new and needed replacing while they were accessible. These were things like the oil lines, the manifold gaskets (obviously), the manifold studs, the cowlings (which needed to be painted as soon as I got them) and a number of other service parts and adjustments. Everything got a thorough clean as well, which was obviously unpleasant.
I expected the job to take me a few days but in reality it took nearly three weeks. Cost was also much higher than the price of the new barrels because I had to buy tools and those other parts I mentioned, so total cost to me was north of 600 quid I'd say. Now the car seems to be running without issue, but the long term question remains to be answered.
Would I recommend it? As a learning experience, yes. Having never opened an engine before it was a total stretch of my comfort zone and I've learned a tonne. I now feel like I could do just about any job the car might throw at me in the future, which is great for my confidence in driving an old car everywhere. As a driving experience, couldn't say yet. Now begins the 1240 mile run in period, so I'm not going to be driving fast enough to test anything. It runs a lot better, but that's more down to the timing/tappets/new coil/oil change that I've just done while everything was apart.
      Hope that helps.

@@Munkenba Cheers! Sounds like you put a lot of time and effort into the project, well done! I've not taken an engine apart but I have replaced one on my car as I had the misfortune of having that one in a million engine that had the camshaft separate from the flywheel when the rivets failed. Please update me on your progress as the engine wears in after driving a thousand kms! Best regards!

Most 2cv owners leave the barrel on and just expose enough piston to get the little end in. 👍

"+50cc" from what.. the 425 or the 602? can you put the later barrels on the 425? what about the carb? Who was the supplier? what applicable years and motors? Who was your audience with this? Just random passers-by? It was still interesting, but not very useful.
