The reason they don’t crawl off when it’s dry is because they can’t get any grip. Put some in a dry jar and they can’t crawl up the side but add water and they can stick to the side and climb right up.
Loved this series, really inspired to try attract some BSF this Spring. I've been really interested in breaking down more of my house hold waste for the garden. Will go nicly with my worm farm :)
I have a nearly unlimited source of leftover donuts. My chickens don't seem to like the donuts (I'm guessing it has something to do with the amount of sugar), would this be a good food source for BSF?
Loved your session, thanks for sharing this with the world. You talked about juice waste, will the added white sugar in the juice waste create any issues?
Can they eat unused coffee grounds or only used coffee grounds? I'm working on making a list of foods. They eat high value and soft foods and cooked foods FIRST. +Coffee Grounds +Chicken feed +Cat food kibble +Dead animals (such as armadillo, gator, but not their bones or scales) +Banana peels +Bananas +Fish (cooked or raw, prefer cooked) +Vegetables (not celery or parsley)+Tomatoes +They will eat Onions. +Romaine lettuce +Pig manure, cow manure, human manure (beware of getting e. coli, salmonella and diseases, not recommended beyond compost toilets) but you will have a lot of waste. +stale oatmeal +stale chips +duckweed ----- ?Calcium Carbonate? ?Squash ? ?Cantaloupe? ?Carrots? ------ They will NOT eat: -Fruit rinds -wood -grass -high lignin/fiber -Bones -Alligator scales.
What info is out there on production of BSF in COLD climates? I'm in South Dakota, so its a zone 4. Our temps are NEVER in the "critical temps" of high temps, but I'm curious what the "critical" would be in low temps? I've got a colony in a terrarium currently, determining what the plausibility is of raising them inside in the winter months. What wondering if you can direct me to any research?
I am wondering if the GMO of the feedstock you feed to the BSFL, can be still be listed as a certified organic feed. While feeding it to your organic chickens?
Sunlight was mentioned as a way to pasteurize the grubs. If farming was done large scale, would freeze-drying and vacuum packaging provide any additional benefit? Also, what would a standard shelf life for sundried grubs be?
The waste from the bins can be fermented for chitinase production and used as a natural pesticide or fed into a methane digester to produce methane from the chitin cast offs.
Wait. You ONLY feed Red Worms 1-week-soaked cardboard/paper and grit (sand)?! I thought they require other foods like banana peels and calcium carbonate, like pulverized egg shells or calcium carbonate powder. Have you had Red Worms for over a year with just cardboard and sand?
I produce rodents on a commercial scale and I’m looking for a way to reduce the waste they produce, the waste is a combination of rodent droppings (60%), pine shavings(30%), lucerne hay(9%) and wild bird seed(1%). Would a mix of this, coffee grinds and food scraps work for BSF?
After watching this and other BSFL videos, I keep hearing roughly 20% conversion. And Part 5 ~24min suggests 5% waste. So where is the other 75% of mass going to? If it isn't in the solids, do we really have 75% liquid or gas?
No. A lot of it is solid material too. He talks about what gets left behind and how it's great for worms. A lot of it should be liquid though. That just makes sense.
Hi I'm living in south France in a région where we have a lot of duck waste, skin, fat... everyting left after the duck is prosess. do you think if it done industriel you cold feed those?
The reason they don’t crawl off when it’s dry is because they can’t get any grip. Put some in a dry jar and they can’t crawl up the side but add water and they can stick to the side and climb right up.
I love this channel. I keep rewatching these videos.
Excellent video! I learned a lot from this! Now I am going to watch all of them. Thanks for this great info!
Very helpful!

Wow!! Thank You Karl Warkomski for all that you do... Love to you and your family
What kinds of probiotics can one use to ferment the waste before it will be fed to BSF
Can i use quail poop to feed my bsfl
Finally a use for cat poo!
Go to the farmers market and ask the strawberry vendor at the end of the day for the bad berries.
Thanks, this is a ten across the board.
valuable, valuable information! Thank you!
The 5% residue would make excellent feedstock for mushrooms and other fungi.
I have a nearly unlimited source of leftover donuts. My chickens don't seem to like the donuts (I'm guessing it has something to do with the amount of sugar), would this be a good food source for BSF?
This is really enlightening ! Waiting impatiently for the next one :)
Anyone from 7 years ago can share his experience with me ?
Love the content
Loved your session, thanks for sharing this with the world.
You talked about juice waste, will the added white sugar in the juice waste create any issues?
I'm from India...
Tq a lot for information, keep doing
What about donkey manure? It is closer to cow than horse, very moisture high when excreted
Can they eat unused coffee grounds or only used coffee grounds?

BSFL can feed on animal poop..!! can it feel on human poop too..? Can we think about Faecal sludge treatment using BSFL?
will they eat SCOBYs from Kombucha?
Will they eat acorns?
I couldnt understand properly abiut duckweed, i heard its Good tô feed chickens but is it also Good for BSF LARVAE ?

Will they eat grass (as in meadow grass like sheep)?
Can you add a little hemp bedding to absorb excess moisture?
I am wondering if the GMO of the feedstock you feed to the BSFL, can be still be listed as a certified organic feed. While feeding it to your organic chickens?
i liked your question. so i did a tiny bit of a search for it: countryfolks.com/deciphering-requirements-for-organic-livestock-feed/ might help
I wouldn't buy from a farmer feeding GMO to BSFL and then claiming organic chickens. Consumers who care outsmart the fraudulent USDA and FDA.
Sunlight was mentioned as a way to pasteurize the grubs. If farming was done large scale, would freeze-drying and vacuum packaging provide any additional benefit? Also, what would a standard shelf life for sundried grubs be?
what about tea leaves??
Where can you buy the bucket at
Can i use quail waste to feed black soldier fly new larvae ?. The faeces is very dry. Godfrey Damnyag from Ghana.

Also is bread good to add to keep the frass/effluecence from becoming too wet? Thank you in advance of your help.
I live in Missouri we dont have bsf here if i were to get some larvae and put them in a bin would they grow to flys and continue the process?
Weather is too cold. May work if your indoors. There's a company in the Midwest that does it on a commercial scale.

Will the BSF consume Salvinia minima?
Food Grade 5-gallon screw-on style lids are like $8-$9. It's a horrible price, but 100% worth it.
Mine is too wet, what is the best way to dry it out, it has good drainage.
I like your work but where are you in particular
I'm considering creating a black fly / cricket brooder beneath my elevated chicken coop using manure as a feed source . Any thoughts ?
Ronnal Scammahorn in the video, he says not to use fresh chicken manure in a BSF set up
Compost worms below the chickens would prob be a better bet 👍🏼 Think Justin Rhodes video-d a few setups like that
At minute 4:00 is he saying "Duckweed" "duckwheet" or "buckwheet"....?
Thank you
Duckweed
@@livingwebfarms Thank you
Great series! What about chaff from rice hulling?
What type of litter do you use for your cats??

75-80% water? Sound familiar? We are made up of about that much water. The earth to sea ratio is similar. Fruit and veggies have a similar ratio.
how well does this work in winter?
EXCELLENT
26:39 I'm using my Flexeril eyes ft stuff off of a deer head that I'm going to do a European mount on there great for that
What about seaweed or algae?
Goat pettle
Hi I'm living in south France in a région where we have a lot of duck waste, skin, fat... everyting left after the duck is prosess. do you think if it done industriel you cold feed those?
The BSF will eat duck waste, skin and fat those but not the feathers. Just feed gradually.
Will they eat corn and rice bran
If it’s been cooked they will
Can BSFL eat dairy, raw and pasteurized?
Of course, they eat everything
You should ferment the waste first with probiotics (EM Bokashi method) before feed it to the BSF.
I put my bokashi in my wood chips and got a colony of bsf - that is actually how I ended up here😂 trying to learn about this fascinating incect.
Will BSF eat my mother in law, if I uh...... nevermind.
This video is old af and I'm still learning from it
Where did chapter 6 go?
Coming up
Living Web Farms Awesome.
Thanks for sharing these, they're unbelievably informative.
kool
Anyone knows if BSF eat bread and other bakery foods?
Yes, they do.
I want to start a (very) small BSF farm in india .You can send me information about system .& any contract farming company or bayer
