Mantz showed up drunk to do the stunt (common for the times, i'm told). In all fairness, he was well past his prime &wasn't even supposed to be the one flying that day, he was a substitute. The pilot originally slated to do it supposedly had injured himself earlier.
My father had a large-print copy of the novel where the author is stated as being 'Elleston Trevor'. I'm given to understand that Trevor Dudley-Smith wrote under several pen names before changing his name to Elleston Trevor.
Get your facts correct before you narrate. The primary aircraft is a Fairchild C-82A, not a "Fairfield" anything. A worse error is misspelling the name of Paul Mantz.
One of my favorite movies. I never knew until today how Paul died.

I watched this when I was about 13 I guess (63 now). It really made an impact on me and I never forgot this movie.
Its an epic movie , I didnt realise who the dedication was to , or that it was based on a true story . Makes the movie even more special.
