Such a great video! Anyone new to Fantasy and doesn't know where to start doesn't have any excuses anymore. I love all your effort to even divide your recommendations into different categories. And that you're so objective to include book(s) thay your didn't enjoy that much but admit, they moght suit for someone else.

For people wanting to try out epic fantasy, but not the epic length of some of the books, try some of the original Dragonlance (Chronicles Trilogy) and Shannara (The Sword, The Elfestones, and Wishsong) books.

Oh man! Game of thrones is a courageos rec for beginners! While it is high quality writing and very epic fantasy, I do think that it could be rather intimidating for a new reader to embark on such a long and complex story!
Not what i would recommend, but the rest of the books were great ❤

I’m planning to read The Name of the Wind next month. I’ve been wanting to read it for years and recently hauled a copy from a little free library. I gave up on The Game of Thrones after a few chapters 😅. I was enjoying the writing, but I was so confused because it has so many characters and POVs.

Love the recommendations and definitely interested in getting outside epic fantasy with some of your cozy fantasy recommendations. I think it would be hard for me to recommend a series that may never be finished as an entry point for epic fantasy. Not saying they aren’t great or that anyone shouldn’t read them, they should. I would lean towards recommending First Law trilogy instead to get that closure but also the prospect of the following standalones and second trilogy. I also think the Riyria Revelations is a great entry point for someone just looking for fun characters and adventure.

Loved the video! Great recommendations across the board and you put a few on my radar that weren't there before. I'd like to say though, while I love "The Name of the Wind" and Patrick Rothfuss's writing, I'd actually recommend checking out one of the writers that inspired him: Peter S. Beagle and "The Last Unicorn". Beagle has a very satisfying prose writing style similar to Rothfuss and "The Last Unicorn" specifically can be a mix of Comfy Fantasy, Magical, and Epic. And all as a standalone. If you aren't interested in jumping into Rothfuss's unfinished series (even though I love the 2 books that have been released and the 2 Novellas) give Peter S. Beagle a try.

Almost anything by Robert E Howard. Conan, Kull, Bran Mak Morn. Etc. By Fritz Leiber, Fahfrd and the Grey Mouser series are lot of fun. And Karl Edward Wagner's series with Kane(yes, the Kane from Kane and Abel). But in this series since he can not die he has learned to become a dynamic warrior as well as a learned sorcerer.

While I enjoyed both the Kingkiller Chronicles and A Song of Ice and Fire, I wouldn't recommend either series to new readers UNTIL (and not before) the authors manage to finish their series. I don't like being left hanging. At this point, I've forgotten almost everything that happened in both series.

Is it just me or is there some recency bias here? I started reading fantasy in the early 1970s, so started with the Ballantine Books fantasy paperbacks. (Love the Gervasio Gallardo art on many of them.) William Morris, Lord Dunsany, James Branch Cabell, E R Eddison, Peter Beagle, Clark Ashton Smith, etc,. then moved on to more modern, adult fare such as Gene Wolfe.

    • @FunFantasyBooks

Umm i would say that instead of genre, it is more of what are you used to read and how can you transition from there! I would probably say that historical / magical realism and epic fantasy are pretty much safe bets. I also think cozy fantasy and fantasy romance are great but only if you are more into the romance side, or cozy mysteries!

Highly recommend the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas it has a very vague simple magic system so far, and a decent world building. But it's easy to read and I love her descriptions, I suck as trying to imagine everything but Maas really has such a good way of describing things. It got me back into reading after YEARS and I'm surprised not a lot of people talk about it more. Feels like a perfect gateway Series action, romance, mystery it's a great read so far.

I think you're the only fantasy booktuber that has reccommended Game of Thrones (Song of Ice and Fire) for beginners.
Just this past Sunday I picked up Game of Thrones for a reread and I remember why I fell in love with it and agree that it's good for beginners. Martin's prose is just so compulsively readable and despite the multiple POVs, each one still feels different and easy to follow.
