I can appreciate this movie now that I’m older, but watching it as an 8 year old was the scariest thing ever. Especially being like “why is she standing on the chair with the rope?”
Oh my god exactly, I was 7 when I watched this. I barely processed anything while watching it and almost traumatized me. Just finding this movie again and realizing the guy was Asperger, as I am, brings a new perspective to me.

Clank. The story is so beautiful about such an unlikely friendship. BTW, they didn't meet until after Mary was older, if that's a concern. I like how clueless they both were but they. helped each other get over significant obstacles in their lives.. LOVE this film.
@@TheRealClankZoka t's also one of the few films in general that plainly talks about people's flaws and obstacles in life without making them victims but very relatable. It's a film I go back to over and over, it's that good.
I had watched this when it was released through my uncle, who was (and is, if I based off of my observations) a very articulate and sentimental man. He was brave and creative. He loved weird movies with deeper meanings that as I a nine-year old child, I could never comprehend. But as I grew older, I realized it was related to what life is really about. Mary and Max was inexplicably odd back then, but sailing through the sea of life with a boat of loneliness like the both of them...it is more meaningful to me now. I was open for ideas and heroines with greater abilities than their own size, and believing that I can create an impact if not on everyone, but on at least one person. But my uncle doesn't talk to me anymore because of some family issues, but this movie reminded me of how he played the greatest role of shaping my creativity and outlook about life.
Knowing what I know now I'd send him this comment, nothing else needed, and see what happens. If nothing then no problem but maybe just maybe it will trigger something good :-)
I'm right there with you. The end had me balling. You have to see "Cuerdas" it's a Spanish animation in the same vein of friendship. It's about these two kids in an orphanage. It's about 10 minutes or so long. My daughter showed it to me on her iPhone and while I was watching it I fell apart. I defy anybody to keep it together after seeing it. It has English subtitles and easy to follow. But damn it's a tear-jerker.
The one and only movie I've watched probably for hundreds of times and still makes me feel the same way each time. I even Remember almost all of the words and dialogues!
Ran across this movie on Netflix a few years back and I think about it daily. One of the most beautiful moves I’ve ever seen! I recommend this to friends and family constantly! Another great one that is so sad but beautiful is “My Life as a Zucchini” 😭💛
When I was younger, I wasnt really into this movie. It bored the death out of me. But now I love the look, and overall theme of this film. Most of the characters are likeable, and memorable. And the animation is charming. I would have to give this movie a 8.1/10
I saw this in cinemas when I was 17. I came out of the theatre a better person. I hope one day that I can make a movie half as insightful, charming and full of emotion.
I want more films with the message of we should strive to treat people more equally irrespective of age. If you were to play back a tape of any person's life, we've all been or will be all ages. Which is outside of our control. We should be less divided by the misalignment of our timelines. It's already a miracle for any two people that get along well to be alive at the same time. We could have been born at any point in human history.
Not a massive fan of Claymation in general, but one of my friends bribed me into this one. Mary & Max is evidence that great story telling is not reliant on technique. An ageless, bittersweet movie of compassion, ensdurance & yes, Love ✨
Here as I wanted to recommend this film to a friend... but just remembered what a big impact this film had on me... I sort of identify with Max, and was also just talking with a penpal now, I haven't showed her this film yet but she is like my Mary... the way we know each other was also pretty similar as she added me on Facebook at random one day, now I have known her at least 7 years (possibly more), so I have pretty much seen her grow up... just as she helped me grow out of old habits I used to have... just hope I don't meet a similar end as Max did
@@asyammm She is such a sweet person... my dream one day is (if my own relationship lasts) to all meet, me, my gf, my penpal and her bf, and enjoy a coffee together (and perhaps some condensed milk)
This movie is hauntingly beautiful. Cannot believe that it has been 15 years since this movie came out and now 15 years later Adam Elliott has another fantastic movie out: Memoir Of A Snail (which similarly to Mary and Max begins in the 1970’s (specifically 1972) and spans decades into the protagonist’s life up until the 90’s/2000’s). Saw this movie as a teenager by accident, as I didn’t see it when it first came out because I was too young (I was 10 when this movie came out). The best way I would describe it to someone is a platonic “Harold and Maude” meets a platonic “You’ve Got Mail”, if it were directed by Tim Burton, with a touch of Richard Linklater’s “Before” trilogy or “Boyhood”. Have to say, rewatching this now, the ending hits harder now that we have lost both Barry Humphries AND Phillip Seymour Hoffmann.

Hot damn I just rewatched this, I don't think I'd seen it since it first came out on the film festival circuit and I loved it then but it's so much more powerful now in this era where mental illness and Autism awareness are so much more prominent. This was such a great film, and RIP Mr. Hoffman.
