This is one of my all time favorite movies. I have watched this movie more times than I can count. I love it more each time I watch it. Rest in peace Miko Taka, All of the actors in this movie played wonderful roles. Sayonara is a classic. May it remain that way forever.
I'm 76 years old and I saw this movie when it first came out on screen --- It was 1953, and we were in Yokohama Japan. My dad was in the Navy. He had a buddy who had married a Japanese woman. I remember how my family would often visit Ken and his lovely wife, Kemoko. They had a small little house much like the one shown in this movie. It was also right next to a canal......again like in the movie. I also remember that Kemoka had made these lovely kimonos for myself, my younger brother and sister. I enjoyed those times.

Superb movie! Most powerful movie with a great cast & great story. I was on the edge of my seat wondering how this movie would end. I saw it on TCM & loved it so much I bought the DVD. ❤️❤️❤️
What a wonderful story! Obviously it's Hollywood-like, a bit fairy and a bit cliche but overall it's amazing, glamorous, touching and historically accurate. The hairstyles, wardrobe (wonderful kimonos), habits of Japanese people, even the way a Japanese women speak or move - it's all true, nothing is fake or misplaced. I think that director and the whole team that made "Memoirs of a geisha" should learn form this movie.
I just love your positive sentiments. Like many of us, we kind of don't want sad endings. I'm glad we can each find meaning and interpretation in the experiences we get with literature and all the many venues of artistic expression. I know I did, as a very young person, try to reinvent the ending of Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind. It is great there are a few scenes remaining on You tube of this movie, I believe the entire movie was here at one time, then removed. Maybe it will come back....here's hoping. For me, all the major performers in this movie were outstanding.
I think when we realize how much people from anywhere have in common - cross cultural marriage nowadays is much more acceptable. In wartime/postwar years it is difficult, as in the case of Kelly and Katsumi, and Gruver and Hana. But they took a stand; their happiness meant more than the 'rules'. P.S. My husband was born in Mexico; I am a 'Caucasian'. Nobody objected to our marriage, now 15 years in..

Yes she has a long life than ever her sad role in this movie or original novel by Mitchell . It was another version after Puccini ‘s Madame Butterfly, the American Marine Captain , but in this Novel he was American Air Force Captain . So Japanese women has earned a good name in American Men Society for decades . Thanks to those novelists in the States for shaping the image of Oriental peoples via those Romantic stories and movies .
This movie had some pacing issues. But overall, it had some wonderful moments throughout. The lighting was pretty flat. But perhaps, it's not about the surface, but the message its communicating.
What do you expect? This movie was made in the 1950’s. Actually the filming looks much more realistic then present day! Also Red Buttons and Miyoshi Umeki both won Best Supporting actor/actress Oscars.

Depending on perspective...one could more certainly see the son of a general with a promising military career leaving Japan without a Japanese bride. Major Gruver then can get his silver oak leaves to replace his gold ones (with higher ranks sure to come). However, this does not provide for a better dramatic effect at the end than what we saw in the movie version. For this movie that ending was perfect...but probably not for the real world in the 1950's Michener was righting about. Back then an officer with a promising future - any officer, not just the son of a general - (rather than a lower ranking enlisted) taking a Japanese wife would have been a kiss of death to future promotion to the next rank (much less an eagle or star). Being a military officer myself, married to a Korean lady for 40 years this month (who gave me two beautiful and highly intelligent children - who, in-turn, have given us 4 beautiful grandchildren), I most certainly can applaud the movie ending from my perspective. And yes, even in the 1980's there was still some prejudice in the officer ranks and especially their wives. I shed a tear about having children that are "half yellow, half white" and I still cheer when Brando utters his last line...

I found the original book this movie was based on years ago. The ending in the book is the exact opposite--they don't end up together.

The happy ending sure doesn't fit in with the darkness of the overall story. Especially the double suicide.

There were many Italian American actors in Hollywood in the 1950s, but Marlon Brando wasn't one of them.
