I am going to camp for longer period of time for the very first time. I love being outdoors and this is such a useful video for someone like me who is new to camping.
I would also recommend a hair brush/comb! My hair gets so tangly after just a few hours of hiking, especially when wearing a hat, even though I braid it. And a hair brush has made me feel so much better, being able to untangle my hair.
I keep a “potty” kit with a trowel, urinary device, wee wee cloth, TP, baby/body wipes, reusable sanitary pads, a 2” thick piece of zote soap (to clean the wee wee cloth and pads with), and a hope and a prayer that I can aim for the cat hole. I also wet wipe before going to bed to keep my sleeping bag as clean as possible.
I have long hair that can also become oily at the end of the day. I tried dry shampoo. It sucked. And then I questioned whether or not I could use something like cornstarch. I have found, at least preliminarily that the cornstarch bonds with a lot of the oils and will flake off, leaving my hair fluffy. I generally use about a tablespoon or less and finger it through my hair.
I’ve heard that deodorants, lotions, even scented toilet papers can attract bears and critters so I try not to bring scented anything. Not that you can eliminate scent from a human camp...🤷♂️ hand sanitizer is a great idea and I’m throwing some in my pack this year. Thanks for sharing! 🤙🏻
Long Answer coming 😅 but hope this helps! The only bears on record in studies and anecdotal evidence that show attraction to used menstrual products are polar bears. Black and grizzly bears have virtually no evidence that suggests they are attracted to them. But it's all pretty inconclusive so precautions are never a bad idea. Personally in black bear habitat, I have never had a problem with either hand sanitizer or menstrual products. Some official precautions recommended by NPS (National Parks Service): 🐻 Do not bury tampons or pads (pack it in - pack it out). A bear may smell buried tampons or pads and dig them up. By providing bears a small food "reward", this action may attract bears to other menstruating women. 🐻 Place all used tampons, pads, and towelettes in double zip-loc baggies and store them unavailable to bears, just as you would store food. 🐻 Many feminine products are heavily scented. Use only unscented or lightly scented items. Cosmetics, perfumes, and deodorants are unnecessary and may act as an attractant to bears. 🐻 Follow food storage regulations and recommendations so you can avoid attracting a bear into your camp with other odors. All odorous items that may attract bears, including food, cooking and food storage gear, toiletries, and garbage, must be kept secured from bears.
The pee funnel has been SUPER helpful for me. I don't have to undo/take off everything and do the awkward squat.
It also makes cleanup super easy.

Thanks! I didn’t necessarily like what the video had to say but maybe I’ll try camping now. Is this how you prevent uti’s out on the trail?
Thank you!!! Now I have a game plan! Thank you Allison Boyle!!
Add a portable bidet like culo clean; wash up after pooping. Kula cloth is awesome. Deuce of spades is a good shovel. Femmycycle is my menstrual cup.

Thanks I’ll be camping for the first time next week so excited ❤️

Great Job on the Vid. Lots of good Info Thanks for sharing.
No problem! :)
Thank you
What about when camping in near country? Do we need to keep the hand sanitizer and used menstrual products in the bear canister at night?
