Man I loooove your house, looks amazing. Thank you for all your Telsa content, i think im slowing being converted into buying a used model 3 over a camry.
Thank you for this update! We will be getting our Powerwall3 and solar panels installed in perhaps 2 months. Great to hear how well you are adjusting to your new system! I look forward to more updates.
OMG CONGRATULATIONS Ryan on your new house 🏠 🎉✨️ Amazing Video, it has some very good information about the powerwall which I need here in Australia Thanks 🎉🎉
Well done and congrats on moving into your new home. The PowerWall 3 looks like an incredible system, looking forward to further updates on it. Thanks.
Ryan I just absolutely love everything about your house. The location, the energy system, and the style of it. You go into in depth perfectly for people who may not understand this sort of stuff. I absolutely love your styles of video. Being an og, 15k subscribers on wards, watching every one of your videos I've just watched you continue to grow, and you deserve nothing short of that! Out of every RUclips channel I've ever watched, on every topic, even people that make videos on topics you do as well, you just take the cake. I'm so happy for you Ryan, you're truly living the dream life. What a beautiful family! Willow will just absolutely love growing up there, just the nature in the background is just so calming even listening to it!. Luckily we live a 20 minute drive from the mountains! I messaged you on Insta today about the Dyson floor mop, and then talked about the Teslas rim being damaged from that pot hole, quick update, Tesla mobile service came out, they took the wheel off and there was actually a dent in the rim, they suggested we go to a 3rd party wheel repair shop. :) Have a good one Ryan! Keep up all the good work!
Wow, thank you so much. That means a lot. And yes, we agree-should be a great spot for Willow to grow up. We are so glad to finally be in the new home after so many years of waiting. I'll message you on insta.
I have a 9 kW battery that drops to 20% which is the minimum on some nights them imports from the grid, but most nights with the bedroom AC on, it gets through until the sun comes back. I love it. With the main AC on through the day, I watch the graph and modify what I put into the Model Y, just using solar.....and of course the dish washer cycles only when there is plenty of free power. I do wish I had bought a Tesla power wall.
Congrats! The house looks fantastic, and I am now convinced about the power-wall. I remember subscribing to your channel when you first got your Model 3; it's great to see how far you've come and to view your excellent content.
You’re house is beautiful and I love the details about power wall 3! Thank you for making this content, I share it all the time with friends and family. 😊
Very nice, we are looking to move rural very soon, will be very interested to hear more about the build, costs and pitfalls etc. When it comes to using excess solar energy, we have installed heat pump hot water, and set to heat at 12 pm to 3 pm, and now cook and eat main meals at lunch time, so we are cooking with induction using excess, and not eating at night, (also lost weight doing that) and use air condition to turn the house into a thermal battery, cool the house to low temp, so when solar stops for the day, no need to run air con through night as home is already cool.
For Tesla’s charge on solar feature to appear. You need to set permission to export to yes. As soon as I set it, the feature appeared on the car page. I tested backup power feature, it took a few seconds to switch over. Not quick enough for computers, still need UPS on critical infrastructure such as NAS and Home Assistant server. What water tank is that? They are usually indoors only, would be good to install it outside when I change over to heat pump heating.
What a great house tour! I would like to highlight the installation of an indoor fireplace. It will make for terrible indoor and outdoor air quality. Indoor fireplaces also create really bad draughts.
i thought the same, it doesn't fit the eco-friendly nature of the rest of ryans setup :) I would discourage anyone from using wood fires, as they smoke up the nice countryside. Here in the Dandenong's its terrible in winter, with every 5th house having a smoking chimney.
Hi Ryan, can you share details on your solar system setup and any other smart home devices installed? We are building in Perth and looking to do a complete smart home setup. First quote for a PW3 supply and install was $18k and that’s without solar panels. Thanks 🙏
Gratz on the house! Cheers for the info also, i didn't even know we had PW3 in AU's yet. I have the PW2 atm and am about to order a 2nd PW2 and will have max 10kw output during peak loads. Most I ever pull during evenings is around 8kw.
As an elec eng, the most important upgrade of PW3 is the DC coupling of the panels via the in-built MPPT's - saves the cost of external AC coupled inverters and provides armageddon capability. 10kW single phase sustained is still too low IMHO. In my setup, I have a large house on acreage in NW Sydney - 64kWh LFP, 3 x Victron inverter/chargers (8kW sustained and 20kW peak per phase) sharing the battery (yes, sharing is the vitally important as phase loads are never balanced), 40kW AC coupled and 10kW DC coupled panels. For overcast skies mid-winter, battery struggles to fully charge daily, so you'll face the same challenge. I can export to the grid and this pays for the daily connection charge from August to May. Also, I chose a 3 phase aircon that has a wide ramping capability (MHI 20kW -> 22kW max and 5kW min) - this is important to optimise energy usage when turned on and each room is a separate zone.
Nice !! Sounds like an amazing setup. We only have single phase available in our rural location. The installer mentioned multiple times how good to the DC coupling is with PW3, so will be sure to mention this in future content.
I might have missed the total amount of equipment costs and installation cost. For example how many solar panel’s panels, power wall 3 and labour installation costs. A rough estimate would be great thank you
That's an amazing house and in an even better location! Looking forward to seeing more about it! P.S. Just got solar installed in my house. I wish I'd known about potentially going the Tesla route (I don't drive a Tesla), though, perhaps I can get the Tesla battery in the future, as I've not installed a battery for now (waiting for possible Vic Gov incentives).
Very happy with my PW3, I'm on Amber for grid power and as such have given them control for exports. Still not sure if that is the right choice, only time will tell.
Ryan, you appreciate having the Powerwall during those power outages. Sorry if you did mention the size of your solar but how many kilowatts is it and is it three phase. I'd love to know the figures like peak output in the middle of the day and production for a day. Is it ok to charge your car from the battery? I guess if you're not home through the day, you can't go direct from solar. I just thought I'd heard it wasn't that great to charge an ev from the Powerwall. You'll be set when you get your excess exported to the grid. That'll help pay down the initial outlay
Yeah that would be awesome to know. I have solar panels on my home, not Tesla ones though, and we are operating with the largest amount we can without upgrading our inverter and power system and whatnot. The 22 panels can still struggle to power our hot water, dishwasher and washing machine at the same time, though we don't have a battery yet because we are waiting on the price to get smaller and the tech to get safer.
9.24kW solar system, single phase power. You can 'top up' your car from Powerwall like I was, but the cars battery is MUCH bigger, so wouldn't normally do this. It was just because we hadn't moved in yet.
That's good to know Ryan, thank you. Mine is also single phase and maxed out in Queensland as 10kw. I'm seriously thinking about a new y. I have a fair bit of excess power that does get fed into the grid but given the difference between feed in tariff and cost of night time power, I need to feed in 2.5 times what I buy to break even. A battery changes all that but it's just that initial outlay. Good on you for taking the leap with it all. Something I would have done is go solar hot water We've had our system for just under 20 years and still performs well. (Touch wood) Thanks for the reply. Cheers Peter
House looks amazing Ryan. Winter is sure to be a good test for the Powerwall (and the house) - it gets very chilly up this way! Can I ask what the system cost? The installers looked pretty pro.
Log out of your Tesla App and back in, and it will then prompt you to enable the Charge On Solar feature. I think there is also a setting within the car to enable this… maybe have a dig around in the charging menu.
Congrats to the family on your new home 👍 Thanks for the review on the powerwall 3 I really wanted the Powerwall 3 but it only supports a single phase and my homes 3 phase 😞 Wish Tesla would create power walls for 3 phase homes, unfortunately I’m looking at models from BYD but I just can’t make myself buy it as from the reviews like anything not Tesla the software isn’t up to spec and they don’t instantly switch over in a power outage 😢
Problem is capacity of this powerwall 3 hasn't changed from 2, although it can use 10kw at peak that means can only run 1 hour or so at that level given capacity is about 13kwh, my powerwall 2 during winter sometime can barely last whole night and rarely actually reach peak 5kw capacity, and I suspect one 3 battery won't make that much difference in my or most peoples case for now
Ryan, what’s you take on whether Tesla will allow their cars to supplement the grid via a solar system. Feed in tariff during the day now is rubbish, it’s negative numbers. So if we could take say 10-15kWh from the Mod Y during the evening hours when the tariff is high that would be ideal for us. We have a 10kW solar battery, an LG i’m afraid, but that’s to run the house at night. The car usually charges during the day 3 days/wk. It would be a great disincentive to buy a Tesla EV if they couldn’t supplement the grid even though it’s competing with their own powerwall. Do you think they’ll come to the party or not Ryan. Cheers! Great blog btw👍👍
Hi Ryan , congratulations on your new home. I live in the Lilydale area and from the mountains in your video shots it appears you may also be in the area. We have been at your Tesla get together's in the past. Look forward to catching up again in the future. Cheers Henny
Hi Ryan, thanks for another very informative video! Love what you have done with your new home. We will similarly be building a new all electric, 3 Phase home this year and will be installing 14KW Solar + Tesla PW3 Battery and Gateway to provide power to charge similar appliances to what you have covered, including our Tesla MY via a Tesla 3 Phase Wall Charger. Interested to know how you approached Back-up power to your 3 Phase home from the PW3's single phase supply. We plan to just have the essential things like fridge, lighting, and power to the kitchen/living room, network eqt on the backup phase. Thanks again, and Happy New Year!
I don't know why anyone would send excess power back to the grid. You should have enough batteries to capture all your solar. BTW, the house looks great!
Yeah especially when they basically pay you nothing for it ! But Tesla Energy and Amber Electric can allow you to make back good money when draining your battery at peak times-something I will explore.
Do you think the cost of the powerwall is justified? Feels like it would take many years to pay itself off. Would love an update vid once it can feed back into the grid. I wasnt aware it couldnt do that!
Huge congratulations on the completion of the new place. Made me laugh when you said you wanted it by the frount door 😂. Hopefully after the farm is finished we can do a similar thing in malvern. How many kWh is your solar? Also yes our friends don’t use three heated flooring in bathrooms because of how much energy it costs. Congrats again!🎉
Interesting that you guys stayed on single phase for a new build with an EV. Would take you from 7.3kW/h charging to 11kW/h to really utilise the PV array. Either way, really clean and a versatile system.
Nice. Zero export, Ryan. Is that a limitation from the grid operator in that area. I like the flexibility of the powerwall to sign up to Virtual Power Plant plans as well.
How many car charges can the power wall sufficiently provide on a full charge? Is this something you've accommodated in the event there is a power outage and a need to evacuate the area (e.g. bushfires) now that you appear to be regional?
Thanks for this video and congrats on your new home :) One question: What would happen if you wanted to draw more power from the Powerwall than it can handle during a power outage?
Thanks for the video. How many square feet is your home and do you know at what point you would need a second power wall 3? Also do you still get a rebate for purchasing a power wall?
Great video update Ryan, too many people don't understand the savings they will be making for the rest of their life.savings just on fuel for the average family that have 2 cars $10k
Hey Ryan great video! Thanks for sharing your experience. A question, you said you can use air con and charging your car at night and your PW3 never drops below 50%? I would think air con and charing would easily run over 13kwh in 10 hours.
Just in the first week, we haven't dropped below 50%. Our house is built on passive principles so very rarely do we need heating or cooling. We have only charged the car via solar since we moved in.
@@RyanCowan I have 8.8 kW hoping to expand to 13.2 kW in the middle of January. I have powerwall 2 and heat pump for hot water, still on credit with my power company. Waiting for my December bill but have about $150 credit. Love your set up.
Not to be intrusive but I am fascinated by being self sufficient and I know Australia has different pricing than the states…. But how much with the power wall, solar panels, and house did your total cost come to?
im in melbourne, and have 13.5kw solar panels + pw3 on order to replace 13 year old 5kw system and cost is around $22k after rebates. had another quote $24k as well.
@@RyanCowan nice, just be wary when it gets to winter. It likely won’t be enough to charge the battery and cover your usage during the day. But hopefully you have a EV plan where you can charge your battery cheaply at night and charge your car. I just upgraded from 13.2kW solar to 19.8kW with 15kW inverter. So good our bill just keeps reducing everyday.
@ is this a Victoria thing or federal thing? My PW3 should be installed next week, I’ll be pretty upset if solar excess charging isn’t working for me in NSW
That would exceed the maximum output for PW3, but 32A, yes. However charging the car via powerwall storage is very rare given the size difference. (13.5kWh for PW3 vs 60kWh in our Model Y)
Nice-looking house, but why black? While it's definitely a striking and trendy choice, I've always wondered why it's so common in Australia, given that black absorbs so much heat-especially in an already hot and warming climate. It seems counterintuitive when we’re aiming for energy independence with solar, batteries, and EVs, as this choice could increase cooling demands and strain energy systems (especially as the solar and battery systems degrade and the climate gets warmer, both inevitable). Perhaps it’s a case of aesthetics winning out over practicality-a reflection of consumer trends.
Man I loooove your house, looks amazing. Thank you for all your Telsa content, i think im slowing being converted into buying a used model 3 over a camry.
Thanks Clint. Hope you decide to get the Tesla, you'll love it.
Haha! 😂 A Camry.

I was wondering where my Sulfur crested cockatoos had flown off too, mystery solved! Great video Ryan 👍
haha yeah mate, they are all hanging at our place 😂 hundreds of them
Good on you mate
Powerwall is 13.5kWh and Model Y is 60kWh ! So it's really only for emergency top ups
Thanks for this video and congrats on your new home :) One question: What would happen if you wanted to draw more power from the Powerwall than it can handle during a power outage?
Great question, will have to try ! The app does a good job of showing current power usage during outage
Nice work Ryan, have you looked at Amber as a power provider that can also sync with your Tesla Powerwall and car??
Yep ! Once we can export
nice house brah!
Thanks mate ! You're welcome anytime ! haha
Hi what is the price for PW down there ? Denmark here, yet to get to market....
when you charge your tesla car, shouldn't you be charging it from the excess solar, not the powerwall?
Yes, we only charge from solar since moving in. Powerwall example was when I was visiting building site at night.
Very interesting ! Thanks
Do you have charge on solar yet? If not try logging out of the Tesla app and log back in again.
Thank you! Will try this today
@@RyanCowanAlso try checking in the car itself. Should show up under the charge settings screen in the car. “Charge on Solar at this location”
Should have gotten a Sigenergy sigenstor - you can do 25kW DC charging onto a Tesla.
What size solar do you have? Loved the Current Affait segment.
Thanks. 9.24kW
@@RyanCowan I have 8.8 kW hoping to expand to 13.2 kW in the middle of January. I have powerwall 2 and heat pump for hot water, still on credit with my power company. Waiting for my December bill but have about $150 credit. Love your set up.
How much Tesla power panel range?
Not to be intrusive but I am fascinated by being self sufficient and I know Australia has different pricing than the states…. But how much with the power wall, solar panels, and house did your total cost come to?
im in melbourne, and have 13.5kw solar panels + pw3 on order to replace 13 year old 5kw system and cost is around $22k after rebates. had another quote $24k as well.
I want your house and set up here in Iowa please. Already have the Y.
Congrats on the new build.
Can l ask how many kW & brand of your aircon? Thx in advance.
Looks like a Toshiba Digital Inverter perhaps 14kW Cooling
Hey mate
The house looks nice.
How many kw of solar do you have there?
Thanks. 9.24kW
Have you tried or maybe thought about the 7 seater model y?
Not available in AU. But wouldn't be interested anyway for us.
What is the degradation like with PW 3? Down from 10kW to 1kW storage in 10 years time?
it has the LFP battery now, so judging by the cars using LFP, should last longer than NMC.
where did you guys buy your couch at? would love to know
King Living
What size solar system do you have? ie Solar Panel kW etc 13.2kW?
9.24kW
@@RyanCowan nice, just be wary when it gets to winter. It likely won’t be enough to charge the battery and cover your usage during the day. But hopefully you have a EV plan where you can charge your battery cheaply at night and charge your car. I just upgraded from 13.2kW solar to 19.8kW with 15kW inverter. So good our bill just keeps reducing everyday.
Solar excess charging - why doesn't it work out of the box?
Hasn’t been implemented by Tesla/transmission companies. It’s a regulation thing
@ is this a Victoria thing or federal thing?
My PW3 should be installed next week, I’ll be pretty upset if solar excess charging isn’t working for me in NSW
Doesn't that work with Charge HQ already ?
Ask Tesla locally, but this is a Solar Vic thing for us.
What size solar system do you have?
9.24kW
can it charge at 10kw our just output 10kw?
It can charge the battery at 5kW, at the same time as outputting 10kW. So total output is around 15kW.
Can the PW output 48A for charging?
That would exceed the maximum output for PW3, but 32A, yes. However charging the car via powerwall storage is very rare given the size difference. (13.5kWh for PW3 vs 60kWh in our Model Y)
😍
Nice-looking house, but why black? While it's definitely a striking and trendy choice, I've always wondered why it's so common in Australia, given that black absorbs so much heat-especially in an already hot and warming climate. It seems counterintuitive when we’re aiming for energy independence with solar, batteries, and EVs, as this choice could increase cooling demands and strain energy systems (especially as the solar and battery systems degrade and the climate gets warmer, both inevitable). Perhaps it’s a case of aesthetics winning out over practicality-a reflection of consumer trends.
The exterior cladding colour does not impact just how incredibly cool this house stays on a hot day (without any AC) ! Fair assumption though.
