I think this is a misperception. Eastwood is a good actor and did play some different roles but there was a lot of similarity in many of Eastwood's characters lets face it. He was mostly the badass with that sour puss disposition with some variations of how unstable here and there. Wayne gets trashed a lot for his similar characters, but he did so because at the time that is what people wanted. But they were not exactly the same. Rooster Cogburn was a pretty long way from Mr Anderson in the Cowboys, Ethan Edwards in the Searchers was a long way from his character in McClintock. I think nostalgia critic joked that he couldn't see John Wayne playing the Joker. But I can't exactly see Clint Eastwood playing the Joker either.

His movies also wasn't afraid to show the darker side, and besides that I think john wayne disliked Clint so much because he was just plain jealous of him and his success. John Wayne's dislike of High Plains Drifter is well documented. Though I like it myself, I do understand why he disliked it it just wasn't the old school type of western he liked to make and he didn't understand it was more of a fable than an accurate picture of the west. I've just always been curious if he ever saw Outlaw Josey Wales. It came out three years before he died, the same year he made the Shootist. I'm betting if he had seen that one his views of Clint's westerns would have changed. But then again, he might have taken issue with Eastwood's rather unflattering portrayal of the Union in that movie when Wayne himself usually portrayed the Union as pretty honorable. I've always been a fan of John Wayne, but I think his love for America and his somewhat overromanticized views of it may have caused him to be unwelcoming of a film that showed some of its more unsavory aspects. I think Wayne and Eastwood both loved America, but you have to be honest in your storytelling and Eastwood seemed far more willing than Wayne to show the dirtier side of the West and of America in his films. I think that's why a lot of people like Eastwood better. To me, they are both iconic figures and I honestly love watching both of their movies. Its really a shame they did not do a movie together, because you almost get the feeling that if they had you would have seen a reconciliation of both views of the west making the close to perfect western. that would have been something to see.

Scott, all of whom obviously passed for their own reasons. John Wayne sent the letter to Clint as soon as the movie High Plains came out, not because of The Hostiles scripts. Clint did only did one rewrite to address John's concerns, and they may have gotten together. However John did not read it, thinking it was just the same old crap he already rejected, and tossed it.

1:53 John Wayne NEVER made racist remarks, you have to read the full interview and understand the context.. Though blunt language was used, he said no person of any race should be given a job he was not qualified for over another who was. In other words he did not believe in affirmative action. He said if a Black man was qualified for a position he should get it, if a white man was qualified he should get the job. Curiously the supreme Court of the USA has just reaffirmed what John Wayne was trying to get across. Affirmative action is not constitutional. At least in Universities. If you have the will and the ambition and drive to educate yourself to the appropriate level to meet admission standards, no matter your race or background you should get into the University of choice through merits.

I'd flip that around, even though I'm a much bigger fan of Clint. His characters were flawed, a mix of good and bad, where Wayne's were more idealized and virtuous. His characters were always firm in his beliefs, whereas Clint's could be conflicted, which I find far more realistic and interesting. Anyhow, Clint made about 15 Westerns, Wayne made about 50, in the heyday of Westerns.

Clint Eastwood is talented and has a great sense of humor. John Wayne had none of these attributes and so jealousy played a role in his rejection of Clint. John Wayne is overrated, he is an actor, nothing more. I have more respect for a plumber who can fix things. John Wayne couldn't fix anything.

Youre absolutely right here , of course its Clint Eastwood thats the Best of Them ,he could take almost any role other than western also , where eastwood wins over John Wayne ,Wayne is only playing the same cowboy and only western movies ,he has played two war movies also John Wayne but that is it. Eastwood had played different in his western movies not only AS the same cowboy on a Horse ,and the Best example here is Unforgiven the movie , he plays here different AS a cowboy so a like.
Eastwood has also made a Good action trilogy where Wayne has not, Dirty Harry no one Can do such a Good work here AS eastwood .
Of course some of Waynes movie are Good , but not all , most of Them are to bored, the same and the same , , Eastwood has also made more movies than Wayne much more AS he went older than Wayne. Cant understAnd why people sees Wayne so much better ,and what people sees in him ,they are overrating him more than he is, if we talks about acting performance Well he is a okay Good actor , but here again he is nothing like James Dean was , , here is an example of that Wayne isnt even Close to James Dean in acting performance .
So if Clint eastwood was compared to James Dean maybe James Dean wins in acting performance .but he is the only one i Can find

I USE TO JAB'M IN THE SIDE JUST SO I COULD PROVE THEY DIDN'T LIKE ME!" WONDER WHAT THE ANIMAL RIGHTS GROUPS THOUGHT OF THAT RESPONSE? ALSO WAS ASKED ABT THE COMMENT ABT HIM NOT WANTING TO ACT WITH BLACKS. TRIED TO SWEEP THAT UNDER THE RUG. LOVE CLINT E FROM HERE TO THE MOON! VERY DOWN TO EARTH, SMART, VERSITILE, SOUNDMINDED HUMAN BEING.

Well I just want to comment on.. four-who would have been a better actor. For the role in dirty Harry.. for me it's a Dead ringer Clint Eastwood... One-hundred-percent . Nailed it.... In my opinion John Wayne would have been completely out of character.. and would not have messed with not just the demeanor of the script just the atmosphere in general.... Just my opinion maybe I like Clint Eastwood.. just with his versatility... Inability to. Take on other roles...... John Wayne is John Wayne but it's just my opinion he belong .. western movies only... He just doesn't have the mechanics and Dynamics... do you feel lucky today punk!. 😆No offense to John Wayne fans. Thanks for uploading ..

Wayne rose to fame in the absence of just about every male actor who went off to serve in WWII--their absence opened up a vast number of roles he could take for the asking; yet, Wayne thereafter portrayed himself as a patriotic American, when he was, as usual, so full of himself, as he had the pick of roles to play. He was a rambling, mumbling, solo act who thought himself better than everyone else in that arena. Having never served, he never earned the right to judge ANYONE who did. While I enjoyed his movies as a kid, they were still hammy and popcorn fodder. True Grit--which he didn't like because of his animosity toward Kim Darby--was one of his better films, but those are few and far between his mostly silly movies. Wayne was a hack, a charlatan, an unfaithful husband and a self-appointed judge of all things--even acting, which he was barely any good at, a judgmental hack to his very few friends and everyone else. He had no credibility in the things he supposedly stood for. He never could hold a candle to the VAST MAJORITY of actors who went off to serve in the war, yet he convinced himself he held the standard for patriotism. He was then, and remains, a fraud.

    • @jeffwilder7117

Ya. That’s why when WWII broke out he immediately tried to enlist in the navy but was turned down. He was very depressed about that. Most of the ‘Vast Majority’ of actors who enlisted were given Cush jobs or positions. There were some that saw action, and some even injured. But most people do not know that John Wayne did try to enlist. They just run their mouth because he wasn’t there. Do your research before you condemn.....

Yep, it was right for Marion Morrison to move from B movies to A movies by NOT enlisting for World War II service. (For the record, my father, who is/was about MM's age, put his elementary teaching career on hold and signed on with the 442nd RCT. He had to beg to get his job back when he returned, since the Department of Public Instruction took a dim view of such "frivolous actions.")
