Thank you Lotte. You are so kind! My mother always said "dreams do come true!" And she was right! Dream big! After reading your book, I was astonished at how far you've come - from your hometown in Austria to making it BIG in Australia! Your book gives an insight into a life which teaches high moral ethics, strong work ethics, and working together to 'make it happen." You go Girl! You ROCK on the Zither! :)
Dear Lotte, I am so excited! in my basement is my grandmother's zither. It needs help and new strings but I'm game to give it a try. I saw another great player on the youtube and I thought I'll never find a instruction book but here you are. I have subscribed and will keep watching. Michael in Seattle
Lotte , you are so wonderful , your accent reminds me of my mothers from germany ,The two of you would make wonderful friend,s she is from pforzheim , but i just wanted to say i remember my father always talking about the zither but never really knew what one looked like or even sounded like , you are so gifted to make such beautiful sounds with such a difficult looking instrument , curently i am learning the clasical guitar ,and also violin , Your zither sounds like it can sound also spanish!
re mcgenetics comments, I totally agree. Lotte you are an inspiration. I'm now 50 and I lost my nan when I was 21. She loved music and so do I. Now I'm having to buy a zither off of Ebay! Lotte please can we adopt you, I would share you with mcgenetics and everything!!!!! Lesson for the day....make the most of the people you love today, maybe tomorrow it could be to late.
I just saw a Vintage Hawaiian Tremoloa/Zither for sale today and had no idea how it was used. So, I thought that I'd look on RUclips and I found your video. How wonderfully you play your instrument and you are also a lovely person. I play electric guitar and was thrilled to see you play your zither. Bless you, thanks for sharing.
Thank you Lotte, I wanted to see how this wonderful instrument sounds and works. I'm a composer and I'm learning medieval music, and this will help me :) Thumb up for you ! Grüssen !
hello Lotte just like to say i have downloaded the new CD and i have been playing it all day and still playing it now some great songs on it and love the 3 you have composed yourself you are a star Lotte and you are my hero i love your beautiful music cant wait for the next new CD number 8
We added this video on our zither ensemble page, the Chicago Zither Club, on Facebook. Thank you! You have done a wonderful job presenting one of the most beautiful sounding instruments ever. You are a delight to watch and listen to. Please let others know about the Chicago Zither Club on Facebook. Our page just went up today.
Hi lottie gretings frrrom sydney in oz. Glad to see somewhere for inspiration. I have a very old zither from kruzenacht built by the wullf brothers( gebrüder), im learning as best i can, i play flamenco so its not a complete disaster. I know nobody with any knowledge let alone experience on the thing. Its so little compared to yours. 20"inch by 12inches, the person that gave it, thought it was a toy. But im hooked. Cheers
Thank you very much Lotte! I just found three that a music shop had thrown away...I am going to try to learn to play them with your help :) Merry Christmas!
Vielen Dank. Ich freue mich immer wenn ich liebe messages erhalte. Als ein GANZ ALLEIN MUSIKER sind solche Worte sehr willkommen. Liebe Gruesse, Lotte.
Thank you for this great lesson! You are fantastic! I'm a Hungarian guitarist wishing to get involved in zither playing, too. Still trying to sort out which kind of zither I'd like to play. Auf wiedersehen!
thank you Ms Lotte. This wee lesson has been most useful as I can see how you produce those beautiful sounding notes. I have just picked up a good instrument in a Newtown Sydney Op shop ( as we call antique type shops). Being a guitar player I have always loved the sound of a well played Austrian or German zither, and now I can dally in your ancient craft with some very helpful insights from your computer performances. Danke schon indeed!
Hi again. Nice to hear back from you. Yes, I play most of my pieces by ear, - something complicated , I look into the music sheet but I am not very good reading it. I started when I was 12 and always had this little zither with me wherever I went. My best friend. Happy days, Lotte.
Wow, I love the video! I'm a pro musician in Florida, and my grandfather just gave me a zither that he's had for decades. Instead of reading in one of my books about it, I wanted an aural explanation of the instrument. This was a very fun video! You made it seem as if you were talking right to me, and you are very peasant. Thanks for the explanation of the zither.
My dad has a zither he got from my grandfather. I wish I could play it but it needs to be cleaned and tuned. But the good thing is my dad said he'll get it tuned and such for me if I want to learn how to play it. :) And you play beautifully by thw way! :D
I enjoyed listening to your music, your explanation of the tuning/technique was great. My parents were both born in Miesbach, Bavaria, and my father played the zither very well. It was always impressive to hear-and watch-him play. He put quite a bit of that 'zithery sound' in his vibrato. So much so that after he played for a few hours(YES!)-the sweat literally formed on his forehead! Landln, Polkas, J Strauss, and even some "pop" music. "Jetzt muss er wieder a bissel 'zittern'", hat mama immer gesagt! The slides on the double stops sound great.
Nice to hear from you George and thank you. I will have a look at the Zookie thumb pick when I get to a music shop, but I doubt that I will be venturous enough to try something new as I have enough struggle at my age now, to keep going with what I have. Greetings to you and play well, Lotte.
Don't ever give up something so valuable. You have played for 10 years, keep it going and I WILL come to see you at the OPERA house Sydney.- I did it, so can you. Good luck. Many greetings from Lotte.
Hello stirruped. Mr. Curran got in before me. Thank you for your message and hopefully you will get on to a concert zither one day. Yes also, I hope to land in the good old UK with my CDs one day. Best wishes from Lotte.
Hello, yes it's beautiful to be grandmother, we had a big 18th birthday celebration last night for my grandson Max and my granddaughter Georgia was 12 , also yesterday. So, it means the young ones are taking over but I am still kicking nicely. Happy New Year and greetings from Lotte.
Hello Reign. Good to hear from you. yes, lots of strings and often a problem to keep all of them in tune.Don't ever give up your guitar etc., it's a wonderful thing to have throughout your life. Greetings to you and best wishes, Lotte.
I came here to hear a Zither played, I'm considering buying one. Will be fun to learn. Lovely lady you made me smile watching your video. Keep smiling a Lotte :)
Oh dear, oh dear, I don't know how Karas had his tuning. Thank you for you message Marvin. Of course, Karas plays a Viennese tuning on which some of the strings are an octave higher than in the Munich tuning. You probably have the Munich tuning, so you can check this out. Even when you buy the strings, it is wise to state which tuning they are for.--Good luck with zithering, I am happy to hear you are playing. Greetings from Lotte.
@lotte1935 Hello Lotte! I just purchased your book! I look forward to reading it when it arrives in a few days. God Bless You! I want to run out and buy a Zither and watch your tutorials and start learning - when I received my first royalty check :D
Omg you live here in oz , that is amazing, i found this last week, then i had time and i found your web page. You played in the opera house and i never knew. Then i see you pkaying the unofficial national anthem, on a sitter no less.... Awsome...cheers,scott.s.
Hello Jake, I am so happy to hear from you again.I have put my little zither away for a while and am writing my autobiography instead. But, I will get back to it again and I hope that you will pick it up again too. Happy new 2010 and happy zithering. From Lotte.
Lovely to hear from you. Thank you. I have to look up the Humoresque of a lttle dog, I suppose it's a song and I am sure my dog would love to hear it.--- Maybe one day you will play it, good luck and greetings form Lotte.
I definitely will try it! It needs a lot of work, however, mainly starting with a new set of strings. And I have to wait until the gigging season comes back to afford them. At least they don't cost as much as bass strings!
Hello and thank you for your nice message. I am sure you are a lovely person also playing your electric guitar. All musicians are lovely. Happy days and greetings from Lotte.
hi Lotte nice to catch u on the same time as me hope u keeping well sweetheart look forward to the new cd hope u like the videos i have made using your beautiful music getting a lot of interest in them hope it leads to some sales for your beautiful music love and best wishes always bc xxx
Dear Bernard, your videos are just so beautiful. It must take you a while to put it all together and they are so touching. Thank you for using my music. Keep well with love and good wishes, Lotte.
I remember my grandfather playing the Austrian Zither when I was a child. He started to teach me but he got sick and sadly passed away. I only had 4 lessons. I still have the Zither he gave me when i was 12. Even today it is by far my favourite instrument. Do you know of anyone in Queensland Australia that could possibly restore it so that i may learn it.
Very beautiful music. I miss listening to my Mother play hers. She is gone now and we need to sell them~ she had 2 and an accordian. Not sure how old the zithers are but I know they are pre 1930. I thought maybe I'd try YT and came here to maybe get some info or help. I've checked out ebay and I'll keep checking. Thought maybe you might have some ideas.Thank you and I enjoyed hearing your music~
I play many stringed instruments, but I'm sure I would be lost as far as coordination goes on the zither. But I love the sound of it. Keep up the good work.
i like this vid,Lotte. I was wondering if you've heard of Zookie thumb picks. The blade has a bit of a twist, 10 , 15 and 30* allowing you to hit the strings with more of the flat part of the pick.I love them for resophonic guitars. Thought you might like to try that out..A' thu best Geprge Campbell
Yes Ian "Uebung macht den Meister" was what I was told when I was learning. Practice makes the master. Keep at it, it's a great instrument and like the guitar, you can take it with you wherever you go. So good luck again, play me a tune when you are ready. Greetings, Lotte.

Hello Heinrich-nice to hear from you. I just looked on Ebay and Gumytree for zithers and there isn't one available. You might have to take a trip to Austria and shop for one. The one I have is a "Sandner"-- look it up under "Sandner Zither" which I just did and it will show you the cost of one. Since I live in Australia, I have no access to the Zither world as such and I wish you luck with finding one. Happy days, greetings from Lotte.
Hello. Thank you for writing to me. The first piece I play has no name. It was my very first piece I learned to play and my teacher just called it 'easy waltz'. The second one is 'Lili Marlen' and at the end 'O sole mio' . Have fun. Bye, bye, Lotte.
Szia :):) I watch this, and you are so very lovely!!! :):) I'm a pro guitar player for many years.. I love the sound of the Zither!! :) I would love to take up this instrument... Thank you for this video... It makes my heart sing on a cold day... Sincerely,, THANK YOU.... GOD BLESS...
Hello happy Lotte, greetings from China, I saw this beautiful instrument thru the film Sissi, your playing is awesome! Tuning the zither must be taking a lot of time, especially the bass string (I myself tune piano for a hobby) :)

What an instrument! It sounds like the Munich tone gives you a better drone to refer back to as you play. Virtuosic performance. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Lotte, Thank you for replying. (I've changed my username) I am a guitarist from the UK and I fell in love with the sound of the zither while on holiday in Austria. One day I'll find one, since it is one of my favorite instruments, but in the meantime I'll stay with the organ and accordion. In my part of America (Oregon), the only zithers I occasionally come across are in antique stores and are usually ancient, cracked zithers from the 1880's.
