    David, Thanks for unlocking the secrets of Steve Hackett's playing, and Tony Banks keyboard riffs. I've always been a huge fan but found it very challenging to learn the guitar parts by ear. Your lesson showed me I shouldn't feel bad since the voicing are unlike anything anyone was doing. It does show how musically sophicated Genesis was. I've had the pleasure of seeing Steve perform live several times, and his playing live is flawless.

    Great choice, David. Genesis's 70's catalog are some of my favorite albums of all time. When I first heard 'Dancing with the Moonlit Knight" I couldn't believe how heavy a song could be without tons of gain. Only knowing Genesis of the 80's, I had discounted them as pop fluff, But it was an eye opener when I discovered them during the start of my neoclassical obsession('85 -onward).

    Watcher of the skies is a prime example of many chords shifting around a root bass note. The chords under the solo in the end section of cinema show would also be an easy way to show numerous chords shapes all being played over a root A in bass on guitar. Great videos and you have a lovely relaxed sharing style.

    Thank you David. Once again, very inspiring. Genesis in the 70's were so unique and just like Yes they brought something completely new to my enjoyment of music. Steve Hackett is still making fabulous music and seems to be reaping the success of his artistic vision and enjoying life. Early Queen also had a unique vision and sound. Brian May's orchestration and variety of music hall to heavy rock variations were also brilliantly realised. Would love to think with the talent and technology we have today someone will be able to come up with no limits music but still the lovely melodies we had with these visionary musicians. Keep rockin'. Peace and love

    Great video! As a point of curiosity re: the riff of Back in NYC, I watched a recent interview with Tony Banks where he said that its being played mainly by Mike on a six string bass going through various effects, and then that's doubled with Tony's keyboards!

    @late night lessons Very cool video, nice to see some attention to the actual guitarparts of Genesis' music. One remark though;
    Back in NYC is basically Steve and Mike (I think Mike wrote it). Mike is playing a Micro-frets 6 string Baritone guitar on which he slapped bass strings. That's the "bass" he uses on all of the Lamb lies down on broadway (it's actually a double neck, combined with a 12 string solid body Rickenbacker). Mike is playing it in the upper register of that "bass" (center channel). Steve is on the left side playing it in a lower register with a doubling tape delay on it. Tony doubles the part on the studio version but does not do that live (he comes in later and only doubles the non verse-sections).
    Would be cool if you follow this video up with the later work of Genesis. They always get dissed because they sounded "pop" but as you state correctly here, even Mike is a special guitarist and he totally approaches things different. There are not many guitar players on this planet who actually play I can't dance correct. Even Daryl had trouble figuring out how Mike plays that. I'd say the complexity of their music didn't change at all. I played that stuff for over 15 years as a musician on various instruments. It's still complex to figure out how their actual parts are.

    Love it! Steve and Mike's inverted chord shapes, and Tony's keyboards, always made the Genesis stuff incredible although hard for me to pick up. Thanks for showing these. Would love to see Steve Morse take on Tony's keyboard part in a Firth of Fifth with Flying Colors, especially since Neal Morse has covered that one very well with Transatlantic.

    Learning theory by analyzing songs is a probably the most powerful method. My songwriting has become better because of it and it's super fun. What you will find is that all these people approach music in their own weird ways but there are universal things as well. Don't worry too much about sounding like other musicians just because you learn their songs. It probably won't happen unless you only learn one person or group's music and play it all the time. But why would anyone do that anyway? That would be totally boring! Mix it up and it will improve your musicianship.

    Interesting selections for this bit. Would've, however, like to have seen a touch on either Foxtrot or Nursery Crymes for one. Nonetheless, you still showcased an important aspect of Hackett's style, I dare say.
    And, hey, how about a GTR bit, whereby you present the Hackett vs. Howe styles coming together? That'd be an interesting discussion. Of course due to your approach, there are a plethora of possibilities, I do suppose regarding especially any 'special' bits you can do within the topic of ChordPlay.😎 Always interesting tp see just what path you choose in each one.😎
