One thing about them that really transcends a lot of other bands, is that they have multiple singers that do different songs and they are all fantastic. The band is just one big group of major talent.

"The Best of Times" was a great song by Styx. And sort of fitting for the pandemic too and for what we're all going through or went through. "I know you feel these are the worst of times . . . I do believe it's true. When people lock their doors, and hide inside . . . rumor has it, it's the end of paradise, but I know, if the world just passed us by, baby I know, you wouldn't have to cry, no no -- the best of times, are when I'm alone with you" . . . . . . it was actually a popular prom song back in the early 80s too.

    @timhooper3981 2 года назад +10

"I look to the sea, reflections in the waves spark my memory, some happy, some sad, I think of childhood friends and the dreams we had", when I hear this I think of him seeing his reflection in the water as an old or older man whose thoughts go back to when he was a child or a teenager. As youngsters we have so many dreams, so much ambition and enthusiasm, and as we grow older unfortunately the realities of life set in, but for him and us to stop and think about those once fun days and out friends is cherished memories. Styx = rabbit hole.

Now that you've discovered Styx, I'm going to lay a romantic thing on you. Lead vocalist Dennis DeYoung has been married to the same woman for decades and wrote two songs to her that became big hits for Styx. The earliest one is one of Styx' first hits and it's called "Lady." Hauntingly beautiful song that starts out as a ballad, but builds into a rocker. He also wrote her the song "Babe" for her birthday in 1979 and performed it with some of his fellow bandmates for her. The record company liked the song so much, they wanted to include it on their album that was being made at the time. So they used the recording of the song as it was performed for DeYoung's wife but added a guitar solo. It went on to become one of Styx' biggest hits. So please react to those two:
    Lady and Babe.

This band is like Chicago. They have 'before' and 'after' versions, with the 'after' versions being more pop melodic, whereas their predecessors were more prog rock or rock. This song and this album were a big part of that shift to a new identity. Even Aerosmith and Heart altered themselves to suit that change, which seemed to somehow involve all of the independent radio stations and record labels being bought up by huge conglomerates. They wanted stuff they could sell to TV or advertisers. This is a great performance of a great song though. They always were fun live.
You guys would probably enjoy watching Yes play live.

This tour was dedicated to their original drummer, John Panozzo, who had died suddenly several months prior to when this performance was recorded. The drummer in this performance, Todd Sucherman, started playing with the band after Panozzo's death and has been with them ever since. John Panozzo was the twin brother to the band's bass guitar player, Chuck Panozzo.

Her son played this song at her funeral and sometimes when I hear it, the song brings me back to that moment and I cry like a chick watching Hallmark Channel (LOL). The older I get, the more and more songs that are played at friends funerals/celebrations of life that make me feel that way...stay young. Great reaction, thanks!

Yes, yes yes and MORE YES! One of my favorite bands of ALL TIME! And MANY of their songs have such grandiose sound and uplifting vibe. You cannot leave one of their shows without a huge smile. Their music is like a religious experience.
First to understand the magnitude of this show and why it was so magnanimous in sound:
The band at that point in '96 had already been making music together for nearly 25 years. In 85, they broke up and went separate ways over creativity differences. They got back together in 91, but without Tommy Shaw (he's the shorter of the two blond guitarists). Tommy was a HUGE part of the band, not only for his guitar, but he's lead vocals on many of their best songs, and one of their best song-writers. Tommy at that time joined a "super-group" called Damn Yankees (one of the great group of guitarists of all time - check out their live "Come Again" and you will not be able to sit down!).
SO - in 95, Tommy rejoined Styx and they set upon a big U.S. tour in 96, called "Return to Paradise" which was a homage to their successful album "Paradise Theater"
Sadly their best friend and drummer (and twin brother to their bassist) John Pannazo died from complications of his alcoholism just before that tour. They made a song called Dear John that went on this album and dedicated a great deal of their tour in his memory.
The live show you watched was their last night of the tour in which they filmed and recorded for a big Live Album in Chicago - which is the band's hometown. So that song was their going into an encore end of show performance hence the big bombastic ending, in front of their life long fans in their home city. So that was the energy you were feeling from the audience and the band.
Asia mentioned "the lead singer" - that's Dennis DeYoung. And he is one of THREE lead singers. Like The Eagles (band), Styx band members took turns with songs they sung - each with their own style. This led to a very diverse catalog of songs and sounds. Dennis songs are a lot of keyboards, and piano, and his style is inspired by theater/stage shows. He's a huge fan of live theater, Broadway etc. Other great ones from Dennis are "Rocking the Paradise", "Suite Madame Blue" (in my top three fav songs) "The Best of Times" "Lady" and "Babe". Tommy Shaw has a lot of rocking out songs "Renegade", Blue Collar Man" "Too Much Time On My Hands", and others more heartfelt nostalgic songs of self-reflection "Man in the Wilderness" (my personal favorite by this band), and "Crystal Ball" (a close second favorite). Finally the taller blond haired guitarist is James Young. He has a classic rocker raspy grungy fry to his voice. He didn't have as many songs, but some really good ones with a heavier voice vibe "Miss America" "Snow Blind" (about his addiction to cocaine), "Heavy Metal Poisoning" "Queen of Spades"s and "Shooz"

Love Styx! Funny fact that most likely nobody cares about but back in the day at SeaWorld, when the people could still get in the water with the whales, this was the song they used for the finale of the show. And it was timed perfectly, I have seen that show at least 6 times and it was never off which was really cool since it involved a wild animal. The person would lay flat and Shamu would come up behind them, get their feet with her nose, push them all the way to the bottom of the aquarium, which was very deep, and then push them all the way up to explode the person out of the water, very high up into the air. Having said all of that and the many times I have been to SeaWorld, it always made me sad to see them cooped up. Also why I cannot go to a zoo. Anywho, love Styx! 💗

I had the great privilege to see Dennis DeYoung perform in person when he came to the MN State Fair about a decade ago. The man still had all his performance chops intact. The crazy thing was that he wasn’t even the main Grandstand performance that night. He was playing at a bandshell venue on the grounds nearby. Both performances overlapped, but I think he drew the larger crowd. Everyone there was getting into every song he performed. It was like one big party. It was magical.

What I read Dennis Deyoung wanted to take the band in a different direction! The other members didn't go along with his plans so he left and the band did just great without him! They're still go'n strong without him!!😘

I so appreciate that you guys catch live videos to react to. '70's rock is best experienced LIVE!!! You don't get hung up on the lyrics of a song, but how it makes you feel. The thing with Styx is they had like 4 writers and 4 lead singers. It gave them a versatility.

Saw them in early 2000’s, touring with Journey and Peter Frampton. If we ever get rid of this virus, you must go to a true rock concert from the 70s-80s genre. I promise you it will change your life.

I've listened to this song lots of times before hearing that the entire thing is about an alien abduction. Then I watched the lyrics online and was like "holy shit it is about an alien abduction"

    • @Frostrazor

meh - don't take it so literally. It's about shooting to super stardom following their dreams to be rock stars. Angels might not get you there cuz you need to break some rules to be successful, but in the end, whatever gets you soaring to the stars, that's what this song is about, spreading your wings (or spaceship) and following your dreams and shooting for the stars.

@@Frostrazor "I thought that they were angels
      But to my surprise
      We climbed aboard their starship
      We headed for the skies"
That's pretty clear. Do you have a source for your claim?

@@singerkgreen Ive heard Dennis speak about this song. Its not alien abduction. It was written prior to them hitting superstardom and going for their dreams of making it big

The earlier you go with "STYX"............................................the harder they rock. "Man in the Wilderness" or "Castle Walls" are some of the very best they've done.
