    Excellent. 32 minutes of a guy repeating everything he says roughly 3-4 times.
    Thanks for letting us observe while you figure out what you want to say.

    I use mine in the outdoors and it works great cutting rope and chopping small trees. I don't use it for cardboard, though. I use a razor for that.

      Agree. The knife is great and if someone needs to cut alot of cardboard using a razor blade is by far the best option, they are cheap and cut way better than every knife available.

We all have different requirements in what is our EDC and how we use them. Some knives work better for some maybe not others. Some folks are hard users and some are not. Regarding solid carbon fiber scales vs carbon fiber/G10 laminate...the laminate is actually stronger than just carbon fiber, as the laminate has better bi-directional strength characteristics.

    • @inthepocket7405
      @inthepocket7405  4 года назад

      Well, that depends... just having a layer of carbon fiber glued to the top of g10 is not necessarily “stronger”. If it was laminated throughout, then I would agree. I don’t think carbon fiber is always “stronger” than g10 anyways. It’s a bit more ridged, but it will also snap before it bends too.

    I like mine. It has a great fidget factor.
    My problems with it are:
    1. The hollow grind. I wish it was a FFG.
    2. The weight. It is pretty heavy.
    3. The fake carbon fiber. Make it real or not at all.
    4. The lock implementation. It is gimmicky and the actual lock bar is flimsy and thin.
    Thanks for the review!

    • @alexlindner7584
      @alexlindner7584 4 года назад +3

      It does use real CF, the scale is not FULL CF but it is a laminated layer of CF on top of G10. The lock is the same proprietary lock (compression lock) that Spyderco has been using on their knives for some time now, same size lock bar and everything, the only differences being the position is reversed and there is a button to actuate it instead of pushing on the liner itself. It's been proven and has a reputation for being a very strong and well made lock system.

      Yes, most of my qualms with this knife are personal preference things, but they are negative, and some of the things I mentioned I believe are design flaws in functionality. It sounds like the Smock is a better toy than tool. It may be worth it to get one for the fidget factor and use it for light cutting, while at the same time having any number of Spyderco knives that works exceptionally well as a cutting tool. Thanks for the great video! I learned a lot about a knife I was curious about.

    • @jerryg855
      @jerryg855 Год назад +3

      Out of curiosity what kind of cutting do you do that would lead you to believe the Smock is not enough as a tool?

    • @CosmicJhana
      @CosmicJhana Год назад +2

      @@jerryg855Did you watch the entire video? I really don’t think you did. It’s not about the “type of cutting” I do, or the list of materials I cut . It’s how the Smock performs as a cutting tool. Some of the points presented included: The stop pin choil is a substantial impediment, even just cutting cardboard. The grind geometry isn’t ideal, and the distance between functional blade and functional grip isn’t conducive to any repetitive motion unless you’re looking for carpel tunnel. There are a few more points but you can watch the video yourself.
      In summary, the Smock looks to be great for light cutting. Although it could do more than just light cutting, it’d be a very poor choice. People make very poor choices all the time. As a fidget toy, it really shines. Sometimes all you need in a particular pocket knife is a light cutting tool and fidget toy. Hope that helps you to understand the context of my comment.

    I also wanted that knife when I first saw it on RUclips. Thank God, but the long delay from first viewing to Spyderco actually putting the Smock on the market...I changed my mind, cancelled my pre-order.
    The clip design, the blade to handle ratio, the long wait (though that worked in my favor) and cost all contributed to my cancellation of the Smock. I communicated with Kevin Smock regarding the clip style and was not impressed with his attitude.

    If you do any modifications on your smock at all I’d say the added micarta scales is the best mod for the super smooth g10 black scales found on the 20cv smock. Then remove the 2nd detent ball and then it flys open when depressing the button and flicking the wrist. The closed detent and action is exactly the same without that 2nd ball. It is still hard to shake open.

    I don’t know why people use the word fitment for how things are fit together. This is not what it means, please look it up. It’s an English word meaning how well something is furnished, like an apartment. And the carbon fibre is obviously laminated peal-ply…. Perhaps reading the manufacturer’s information before doing a review would be advantageous…

    This knife is bad ass when you put a after market deep carry clip on it and new scales from sharp dressed knives. There artic carbon scales are unbelievable and improved by removing the ugly speed holes along with nice edge breaks all around making this knife look and feel much better. It makes it feel not so blocky and looks so good. The only down side is those scales are 130 + 35 for a matching deep carry ti clip that brings this knife to about 340 before any tax and shipping. But those scales are DEFINITELY worth it. Also remove the second detent ball and the small spring under that ball and you will have the ultimate spyderco knife. This will make the knife drop shut for the ultimate fidget knife.

    I'm a union electrician so I use a knife daily for stripping big wire, opening boxes, cutting rope, etc. And I bought this knife about a year ago, and it's been my favorite edc knife I've ever had aside from my protech brend 3. I've carried benchmade, protech, microtech, higher end kershaw's and many other brands, but I've always been wary of Spyderco. I have always thought that their knives look cheesy or gimmicky, and I always prefer to buy American made to support American labor. So it's always kinda rubbed me wrong that they outsource some of their knives. But for some reason I pulled the trigger on the Smock, and I do not regret it one bit and may even be enough to buy another Spyderco in the future. To me, it's close to perfect. The only things I'd change is the lanyard hole, the pocket clip, and factory it was made in!
