As someone who also offroads in a stock YJ it was so fun watching you do this trail - you have to be paying attention the WHOLE time or else you'll get stuck. Apparently we have mad driving skills according to other drivers but in reality we are just trying to survive XD
Haha, that is awesome and thank you! I've love to chalk it up to mad driving skills, but yeah, pretty sure I was just trying not to die! But man you'll never have more fun!
Matt I am glad to see this video because I recently bought a 91 YJ completely stock. We are planning to tow it behind our Skoolie this fall since we finally retired from Disaster Response
This was by far my favorite video that you've done. You drove that wet trail very nicely. My daily driver is a white 92', full door hardtop (232,000 mi). I still think the everything squared out hood view out the front on the YJ is my favorite. This video reminded me of doing this when my younger brother owned it before me.. Thanks.
My first 4x4 was a 94 YJ four cylinder. I bought it new. We wheeled the heck out of that thing for five years. All over northern Utah and Moab. Never had one issue with it. Mine was always on stock tires. But the best upgrade you can do is to get really good tires and run them at an appropriate pressure. Then maybe a recovery rope. After seeing the trails Stan does on the Grandpas Jeep YT channel. I firmly believe a stock YJ with great tires could and would do what he does in his MB.
First technical terms, we call holes holes, ruts are ruts, and the smile on your face we call priceless! Great trail for your first trip. If road is wide enough, straddle the ruts, don't slot car in them, clearance issues. Do you have recovery straps yet? If you do, loop one onto your front bumper have it ready to tug you out if needed. Take a change of footwear. If you have to wade water best to drive home with dry feet. Put a tape measure in by your seat, know how much ground clearance you have , then go measure a few rocks on the trail. If you have 10 inches of clearance, you can't straddle 14 inches of rock. Put one tire on rock, drive over it. And you are right, don't go alone( more fun with others). Have fun, the smiles are priceless. You're hooked.
@@SimplyMustGo how bout those Bucs, Brady wins again. Anyway, keep doing what you're doing. BFG KO is a real good all terrain tire, all purpose. Have you put swaybar disconnects on yet? With open riffs they help keep tires on the ground for better traction. Cheap upgrade. You might try taking the rear track bar off, with leaf springs, not absolutely necessary.
@@wesbarcus3761 I haven't done anything much to it beyond getting it mechanically right. I love the BGF KO2s that's the plan for the future, but I bought it and it had new all terrains on it already, so I decided to just let those wear down before I put new tires on and put that money to other things it needed.

@@k-art-L yeah. The plan is to go out without 27 other Jeeps when I can set up more shots and do some drone footage as well. Have a 1000 mile route I’m hoping to take on.
This looks like an awesome trail and probably not too terribly far from me. I'm in Alabama. Cooling can become a big deal too. I'm on 30.6 inch tires. It's all good , it's still pretty hard to bottom out on most trails. The angles are still great. Angles matter more than clearance, especially approach and break over. There's basically nothing to worry about in terms of approach angle with most Wranglers... They are all insane... I'm about 35° after my modifications on my Cherokee and I'm pretty sure stock Wranglers are still better than that. I don't ever hit anything. I was pushing it stock at 29°. That was good if you go really slow but you couldn't go 5 miles an hour or so. I can go a lot faster with just the 2-in lift.
Glad you enjoyed Charlie’s Creek. Be aware that a few times in the video ya were off-roading illegally, plus that Jeep crossing at the end that need towing help didn’t look like the official crossing. This area is not an off-road park so make sure we always stay on the mail road and only cross the river at the main ford crossing.
So how far is this place from Toccoa or Mt Airy? That's where we are staying but I'd like to take a day for exploring some not so flat lands and have some fun. And will anyone be there this next Monday or Tuesday? Nice video.
Thanks for the comment! Unfortunately this trail has since been graded, it still has the nice water crossing but not much else, so I hear. But there are a ton of great little trails like that around that area. Look for things like Sarah’s creek in the Clayton Georgia area. I’m some people will be out on a Monday, but it’s usually only got more traffic on a weekend.
Great video. I have done that trail before many times. It can be rough or sometimes they smooth it out and just about anything can make it. My first jeep was a YJ. I probably had more fun with it than any of the other jeeps I have had. You handled well I thought. Fun ain’t it?
I wish I knew people that did this around here. I live about half an hour from Rabun County (I live in Macon County, NC), and every offroad gathering I've ever seen advertised around here has been Jeep only clubs. I don't own a Jeep. Well, I don't own a Jeep that can offroad anything more than a steep gravel road (I have a '77 DJ5 RWD mail truck with a gas can as a fuel tank). My offroad vehicle is a 2001 Isuzu Trooper LS, and can go anywhere. I had a 2016 4Runner SR5 at one point, and the Trooper has a much more capable 4WD system than the 4Runner had. I just want to not go by myself places. I have a few trails I mapped around here and I want to share the experience with people.
Yeah. I get that. I don’t like taking the risk of going on my own unless I’m already familiar with the area and the trail. There should be some off-road groups that aren’t just Jeeps, I know there is a Carolina overlanders one that covers NC and SC.
Thinking about trying this in my stock 03 expedition. Has 4 high and 4 low but and falken wild peak AT tires. Other than the tires it’s stock. Wondering if I could make it
That’s a good question. I didn’t have has much ground clearance as most that were out there, but I also had a very short wheel base to help me out. I think it’s probably doable as long as you take smart lines.
Hey Matt, what a really fun video to watch. I’m heading up there this Friday. I’ve seen many Charlie Creek videos none have been this rigorous of a trail. Even though I’ve heard it’s been getting some pretty good hole and ruts of late. Can you tell me is this after you cross through the creek and how long is the trail. I’ll be in a JK 3” lift on 35’s. You thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated
Hey John! Yeah it's a fun trail and you won't have any issues on 35s if you pick good lines. I was on 31s and no lift... so... yeah you can do it! The Creek crossing at the end of the video was basically the end of the trail. It puts you back out onto a forestry road that takes you out to the main road. I would say the whole trail was about 5 miles.
Thank you! Yes, it is. If you go and watch my Georgia Traverse movie, you’ll see we did it again in that though the trail is somewhat different now since they graded it, but it’s still a lot of fun. I actually just did it again in another Georgia Traverse movie I’m working on, but I haven’t released yet.
Awesome I watched the movie last night and must have missed it but I’ll check again I appreciate the info I am trying to put together a trip for mid August and your videos have sold me on the trip! Thanks again!
@@SimplyMustGo I gotcha, we have a modified YJ with lockers front and rear and ive been near Clayton area before and even crossed the creek there at Charlies Creek but never went on the trail at the time. @@SimplyMustGo ah i gotcha. all good. I would probably be in 4H anyways just so I didn't embarrass myself if it was my first time haha! im sure you are a capable jeep driver but a great piece of advice my father gave me about 4x4s was: "use 2WD going in, so if you get stuck, 4x4 can get you out" which makes sense because often times, and this is for very difficult scenarios especially, using 4x4 go to somewhere can just get you deeper into trouble. jeep got stuck in the river only cause they are breaking the rules and risking getting the trail shut down for their own greed :( dont get me wrong, I always hit the hardest line on the trail (way harder than this stuff), but it gives jeepers and offroad enthusiasts a bad name when people do what the sign next to them says *not* to do. this is why they love to permanently shut trails down.!.
@@SimplyMustGo yea, no hard feelings, just something people might want to think about. I live in the mountains of NC and they have shut down almost all the trails permanently and gate the remaining national forest gravel roads during the winter due to this sort of thing. the more popular this activity gets, the more they will restrict the trails and shut shut them down. its easier for them to close it everything permanently than try to convince people to follow the rules
@@MrMrsregor yeah. I agree! Didn’t take it personally, I don’t know that was, but I just got into this and I would hate for trails to get shut down because of something like that.
The hill you didn't take at about the 12 minute mark is not a legal area. I believe it is now blocked, but when you are on the trails, be careful to not take "side trails" as more often than not, they are not legal. That is how FS roads and trails get shut down. Charlie's Creek road is an actual road and has since been graded. Please tread lightly.
You are correct. I found out afterwords that many of the “side trails” are private property. That club and myself were unaware at the time (I was still such a noobie that I just trusted the leaders of the trip, but have since learned that and talked with Forestry officials about helping them to put up signage to help everyone be aware and tread lightly. I know it was also graded over a year or two ago and haven’t driven it since. So I don’t know how marked the other stuff is now.
I get it. But it was huge, at least to me at that time. It was my first off roading experience, so everything felt crazy. Also, video never does the trail justice.

Trailing is way fun than anything else, in my own opinion!! I used to do it back in 2010 some where in Franklin Ga, Aniston Al. Carrollton Ga. By the way fun vlog to watch!!!
Thanks! Yeah I love hitting the trails. Can’t wait to get the Jeep back out there.
@@SimplyMustGo hell yeah!! You should vlog more trailing videos, but mouth go pro's out side of the jeep, front and, back and, R/L sides, you're doing awesome!! Thanks for sharing this!!!
@@k-art-L yeah. The plan is to go out without 27 other Jeeps when I can set up more shots and do some drone footage as well. Have a 1000 mile route I’m hoping to take on.
@@SimplyMustGo it will be cool!!!!! I want to watch that vlog already!!! I'm sure you'll have many more subscriber soon!! You deserve it!!
@@k-art-L thank you! I really appreciate that! Hope I can live up to it! Haha
ITS SOO AWESOME TO My favorite RUclipsRS COME TO Georgia, to have some fun on Jeep Trails!!!!!!!!!!
@@SimplyMustGo Thanks man
Great video. I have done that trail before many times. It can be rough or sometimes they smooth it out and just about anything can make it. My first jeep was a YJ. I probably had more fun with it than any of the other jeeps I have had. You handled well I thought. Fun ain’t it?
Yeah it’s a blast! I know they recently smoothed it out so it’s not as fun at the moment, but I’d love to go back again soon.
For some reason I don’t remember seeing all this when I went.
When did you go. It was graded a couple of months after I shot that video.
After a real Jeep trail, how does Sue compare to the Land Rover from the Biltmore video?
It’s like night and day really. Driving the Jeep was WAY more fun!
Cool! What radios did yall use to communicate through the trails?
I had a Boefang but there were a couple of people on CB as well.
Mine is a pretty stock 92 yj.. other than a 4" lift and 33" tires and a welded rear end....
Open diffs will get you stuck quicker than anything....
yeah. Then open diffs are something I want to get addressed eventually. But I was still pretty amazed at how capable it was!
I took my 2wd Cherokee with street tires through it. Piece of cake. 😅
When did you do it?
@@SimplyMustGo Dec. 27th 2018
Hey Matt awesome video , is this trail accessible from the Georgia Traverse?
Thank you!
I did it with my land cruiser also stock
I’m sure your land cruiser had no issues. My brother’s land cruiser would crush it too!
This trail definitely looks cool as fook!
It really was! Can’t wait to get back there and do it again!
Nice video! How long is the trail ?
According to Gaia it was 4.76 miles.
i have a 95 yj go 4 low and its a tank
Nice! Yeah this was my first time doing a "Real" trail and it was a beast!
I'm new to Jeep trails I have a manual transmission what gear were you in during this trail please
So it’s going to depend on if I was in 2WD, 4H or 4L. I’ve found that in for the most part. 2nd gear in 4L made for the best ride.
@@SimplyMustGo thank you just subscribe to your channel may the Lord bless you and yours
The short wheelbase of a stock YJ will get you through a lot of dips and such...
Yeah I discovered just how crazy capable it really was.
Four low and keep moving your doing fine
nice riding. how much of the trail were you in 4x4?
I would say 85% of the time. And for me 60% of that was 4L. Newer Jeeps probably could have been 4H the whole time.
@@SimplyMustGo I gotcha, we have a modified YJ with lockers front and rear and ive been near Clayton area before and even crossed the creek there at Charlies Creek but never went on the trail at the time. When I am in that area I've only used 4x4 when I got stuck. Our Eaton Truetracs and BFG KM2s make a difference I guess.
But I was just trying to get a feel for how difficulty the dirt was that day you went.
If it was muddy, the video doesn't do it justice I guess because it looks almost dry in some areas.
Thanks for you reply. If you live in GA im sure I'll see you around.
@@jdfreeman97 yeah. I probably could have gotten away with being in 4H or even 2WD a lot of the time, but I was worried I’d get stuck and it was my first time out so I wasn’t sure how much she could do with just 2WD
@@SimplyMustGo ah i gotcha. all good. I would probably be in 4H anyways just so I didn't embarrass myself if it was my first time haha!
im sure you are a capable jeep driver but a great piece of advice my father gave me about 4x4s was:
"use 2WD going in, so if you get stuck, 4x4 can get you out"
which makes sense because often times, and this is for very difficult scenarios especially, using 4x4 go to somewhere can just get you deeper into trouble. After you are stuck in 4x4, you are done and need a friend haha.
@@jdfreeman97 haha that’s not bad advice at all!
Where does everyone buy parts for the YJ? Having issues finding small stuff like windshield wiper arms.
Kind of depends on the parts, but I get most of it from places like Quadratec or Amazon or the local parts store.
@@SimplyMustGo I haven't found the windshield wiper arm at any parts store for a 1994 YJ and Amazon hasn't been much help either. I'm looking for a Jeep parts supplier. I've found a couple that have YJ stuff, but no windshield wiper arms yet. But thanks.

Do you think this is possible in a 2WD with a locker and good wide mud tire?
This particular trail got graded over last year and my understanding is that it’s pretty tame now. Still the water crossing at the end though.
Honey badgers and T-Rex taking bypasses?? lol
That probably has more to do with the driver than the Jeep. Haha.

Exactly. I drive on roads like this with my 2wd old beater bmw x5 and he's freacken out on basically just a dirt road. I dont get it
I dont get it.... you were freaking out about alot of parts of the road that I drive with a 2 wheel drive junker bmw x5 without 4wd lol
You probably went there recently I went there about a week ago and they re-did all the trails so that they’re very easy now

I’d find another Jeep club to wheel with. That one seems to do ALL the illegal stuff at Charlies. Enjoy it while its open, won’t be long now.
Looks like an Australian road….
Minus all the things trying to eat you. 🤣
I have driven on worst fire roads why at work on the railroad than this in my 2004 liberty
jeep got stuck in the river only cause they are breaking the rules and risking getting the trail shut down for their own greed :(
dont get me wrong, I always hit the hardest line on the trail (way harder than this stuff), but it gives jeepers and offroad enthusiasts a bad name when people do what the sign next to them says *not* to do. this is why they love to permanently shut trails down.!.
I agree. I'm a big believer in tread lightly and stay on the trail!
