Day 2
Jason Julian, ABA President (2021) gives a presentation about the American Brabant breed. He gives a history starting with the European Belgian before WWII, post war when they were bred for meat, the American Brabant bred farming, or pulling, or showing, hitching. Talks about how the original Brabants originated from the Flemish, Brabant and Ardennes regions of Europe. In Germany they were considered beginners horses because they were bred to be slow and lethargic.
He then has five different horses with various percentages of European Brabant blood into the show ring to show the differences in conformation.
Hitch Horse - 2YO
Farm Horse - 7 year-old
American Brabant - 2 year old
European Belgian - 94%
Light Pulling Mare
Next Jason demonstrates on some audience members why a shorter leg makes a horse stronger - because it is closer to its load.
Lastly Jason discusses the pressures to breed the horse differently due to the economics of selling horses in Europe and US.
We end our episode with a story from Robert Kroeger who wrote Barns of Ohio. He talks about the barn he researched and painted in Morgan County, Ohio and a story called the Snake Killer.
