  • I love simple engineering, so when I came across this 'shadoof', a machine developed many centuries ago (not in the Middle Ages as I mistakenly put in the video) for raising water e.g. into irrigation channels, I couldn't resist filming it in action (electrically assisted). It had been constructed at the Château du Clos Lucé in France, the final residence of Leonardo da Vinci, in a garden filled with re-creations of his inventions. After thinking about what sort of music to put with the film, I went for Kevin Macleod's funky 'There It Is'! See what you think.

Only simple after one sees it. And actually over 3000 years old.

Not 3000, but since 3000 BCE, so already 5000 years old. Apparently the ancient Mesopotamians used it to irrigate water from the river Tirgis
