  • Allison Bond started her career in the British Columbia provincial government in 1990 as a research officer and has operated in various functions, from policy and strategic planning to treaty negotiations. Since 1999, she has held Assistant Deputy Minister postings with five agencies in portfolios such as treaty negotiations, integrated client service delivery and public consultation. In July 2006, Allison was appointed to lead the "Conversation on Health", an initiative to engage British Columbians in a genuine dialogue about sustaining the public health system. At the conclusion of that project, in February 2008, Allison re-joined the Ministry of Housing and Social Development to help lead the devolution of federal employment programs to the provincial government. With the completion of the devolution, Allison is now responsible for leading the Homelessness Intervention Project as well as the transformation of employment programs.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

There are two threads in this presentation:
    1) Young people should consider working for government; it can be an interesting and important career
    2) We (all) should think about systems when faced with complex issues
I think Allison did a great job on #1.
#2 could be argued to be even more important, and is in itself a complex issue. I think on this point we could have a dialogue with students and educators, on how we retool our ourselves to be able to work better with complex systems.

Not a bad talk but the talk relates better to another title, such as: Public Servants who Think in Systems are More Effective
