Thursday's child: Migration | Seven days of social science research

Opposition to #immigration remains widespread in the UK - but a closer look reveals different preferences between types of immigrants. Dr Scott Blinder at the Centre on #Migration, #Policy and #Society explores our complex views on immigration in this video.
Dr Scott Blinder and his team commissioned Ipsos MORI to conduct a survey of a thousand person representative of the British public, asking people about their opinions on different groups of immigrants. They found that a lot of the focus around the preference for a reduction in immigration was directed towards asylum seekers, low-skilled migrants, people who planned to stay permanently and illegal migrants.
62% of people chose asylum as the main reason people migrate to the UK. In reality, asylum seekers make up less than 5% of immigrants.
The researchers involved in this project hope that injecting fact and evidence into the debate can spark a more helpful discussion. Watch the video to learn more about the project and hear some opinions from members of the public.
