      @@911FitClub I beg to differ. Patterson was one of the most skilled boxers and his hand speed is only just surpassed by Ali’s. In fact Archie Moore who fought both Ali and Patterson said the fastest hand speed he had ever seen was Patterson’s. It is true he was undersized for a heavyweight but he could dig. He KO Cooper who floored Ali big time. He defeated Bonavena who gave both Frazier and Ali a hell of a lot of trouble. He also defeated Machen and Chuvalo. He is the youngest undisputed heavyweight champion and was the first heavyweight to regain the title. He was twice voted Fighter of the Year by The Ring magazine and the Boxing Writers Association of America. And as an amateur was an Olympic gold medalist. I would say that’s pretty damn impressive for a boxer weighing just 185 pounds with only a short reach of 71 inches, don’t you think?

    In 2004 I had the great pleasure of meeting Floyd Patterson. My grandmother grew up in New Paltz NY and had attended middle school and high school with Mr. Patterson. They had graduated in the same class of 1954. In 2004 that graduating class had all gotten together at a local restaurant in New Paltz to celebrate their 50th class reunion. My grandmother knowing the huge boxing fan I am had called me that night and told me that Mr. Patterson was there and asked me if I would like to stop by and say hello. Well needless to say I was right there. A little nervous upon meeting and introducing myself to Mr. Patterson and shaking handsi knew right away that he was everything his nickname had always implied: "The Gentleman of Boxing". He laughed and said "I didn't think many kids your age even know who I am". A tremendous honor meeting and shaking the hand of the heavyweight champion of the world. May you rest peacefully Mr. Patterson.

    Floyd was an extremely nice guy, I don't think there was a boxer who ever had character more admirable then he. Floyd had held the heavyweight title for years, and was defending it against Sonny Liston in 1962. Sonny destroyed Floyd, he really just beat the hell out of him, knocking him out in the first round and taking Patterson's heavyweight title with ease. Once Floyd figured out where he was the first thing it did was tell everyone to give Sonny a chance, he's not a thug, he's a good man

    What I loved the most about Floyd Patterson was that he is a man with such a good heart. A lot of heavyweight boxers let their ego eat up themselves up but Mr. Patterson just kept on being an honorable, humble guy from beginning to end-both in victory and defeat. And we can all see that with his closing statements in this video. He kept his head held high and never really took the spotlight for himself.
    His ferocity in the ring was one of the best Iʼve ever seen, too. It was his famed 'gazelle punch' that I truly admired the best amongst those who have iconic signature punches such as Joe Frazierʼs devastating lead left hook.
    Thank God we got to witness greatness in people such as Floyd Patterson on and off the ring. He will always be remembered among the greatest of all-time.
    Thank you so much for this! God bless.

    • @vestibulate
      @vestibulate 4 года назад +1

      @Jason Voorhees On what do you base that opinion?

    • @vestibulate
      @vestibulate 4 года назад +3

      @Jason Voorhees Patterson publicly disagreed with Ali regarding the Nation of Islam. I think he was mistaken in trying to convert a personal dispute of that kind into a national cause. It did him no credit. Having said that, he had found himself targeted for abuse and goaded by Ali (then Cassius Clay) long before the religious issue arose.
      Both men made mistakes in their lives. Ali's abandonment of Malcolm haunted him for the rest of his days. As you grow older, you'll come to understand that a man isn't just the things you like or admire about him. There's more to each of us than that. But in attributing hatred, resentment and fear to Patterson, you're assuming much that isn't in evidence. Patterson fought Ali twice and stood up to considerable punishment without quitting. He also faced Liston twice, knowing he couldn't win. That doesn't look like fear or cowardice to me. As for hatred and resentment, Patterson was never on record expressing his views in that manner. And I think I can state without fear of contradiction that Floyd never confided such feelings to you in a private setting.
      Frankly, I don't think you know much about the man.

      sd g You're a moron. He never ducked a guy like Liston who was killing everyone in the division and got knocked out in the first round 2 times. Sometimes big balls don't get you results. Mayweather runs away from Pacquiao even now when he gets everything he wants. Get your facts straight schmuck.

    • @SDG.12

      sherifffdb905 mayweather is the greatest defensive fighter of our generation. anyone who takes that away from him for not fighting pacquiao, is nothing but a blind hater & certainly not a fan of boxing. pacquiao was the one who held up the fight in the past. he ran from floyd's terms. & now that he has agreed to everything, the fight will go down & floyd will again prove everybody wrong by defeating pacquiao, just like he did to every other opponent who was supposed to 'expose' him.

      sd g Nobody said anything about his abilities, just that a true warrior doesn't turn down a challenge as Floyd did. He should have fought him 5 years ago. If he is such a great defensive fighter he should have stepped up to the challenge and not ducked it.

      sherifffdb905 but the fight not happening 5 years ago is as much Pacquiao's (& Arum's) fault as it was Floyd's. remember Pacquiao's excuse was that he was scared of needles....scared of needles smh.

    I first saw this video like a year ago. But there are certain things he says in this interview that has always stuck to me. For example talking about that "Spark", its so true. Also mentioning that boxing is a revenge sport is spot on. I thank Patterson for what he has given to boxing

    He also seems like one of the only fighters who isn't always keyed up and wanting to kick someone's ass. Some boxers just can't keep it in the ring. They go out, get in bar fights, and get arrested. Floyd just seems really relaxed.

    Even though they were different times, imagine Mike Tyson vs. Floyd Patterson. Two fighters taught by the same trainer with the same style, peek-a-boo. Who would win?

    Wow he was 50 in this video. You don't see that many boxers with a record like his age this well. A shame that this many didn't operate a major gym and train more fighters.

    Great champion, my dad knew him. If they ever do a feature film on him, rapper/actor Mos Def would be awesome, same size and they look like twins. Refreshing to see a champ retire and he looked great and no slurred speech. Gone too soon, R.I.P. Floyd.

    Something about Cuc D'Mato fighters...they have this imprint of boxing philosophy about approaching fear and manhood. Patterson, Torres, and even Mike Tyson (when he's calm) they have this philosophic approach to it

    He was not only a very good fighter, Floyd was one of the real nice guys and, even Sonny Liston said so. Sonny was just too big and, strong for Floyd. Floyd was more of a lightheavyweight. He became a more careful fighter after he lost to Sonny Liston. He had the fastest hands in the heavyweight division until Ali came up. He went on to beat even Oscar Bonavena who was no fluke and, Bonavena gave Joe Frazier two very good fights and, gave Ali a very good fight. Floyd did very well for a cat that was really a lightheavyweight fighting heavyweights most of the time. He did pretty good.
