In 2004 I had the great pleasure of meeting Floyd Patterson. My grandmother grew up in New Paltz NY and had attended middle school and high school with Mr. Patterson. They had graduated in the same class of 1954. In 2004 that graduating class had all gotten together at a local restaurant in New Paltz to celebrate their 50th class reunion. My grandmother knowing the huge boxing fan I am had called me that night and told me that Mr. Patterson was there and asked me if I would like to stop by and say hello. Well needless to say I was right there. A little nervous upon meeting and introducing myself to Mr. Patterson and shaking handsi knew right away that he was everything his nickname had always implied: "The Gentleman of Boxing". He laughed and said "I didn't think many kids your age even know who I am". A tremendous honor meeting and shaking the hand of the heavyweight champion of the world. May you rest peacefully Mr. Patterson.
It's a shame he came up a bit short in the size department. He really needed another 15 or 20 pounds of muscle to be more effective as a heavyweight. That being said, he made the most of his size, and I really can't think of anyone who did better while being undersized.
I was in my car travelling down Sumner Ave. in Springfield, Mass. with a cop car behind me when this other car started passing me and the cops. I thought, "Who the hell is this?" When the car passed by me I looked and saw Floyd Patterson in the pasenger seat with a woman driving and a couple of kids in the back seat and a bunch of fishing poles headed with the family on a fishing outing. He had to be one of the most down to earth and personable and most dedicated to the sport of boxing of all our champions ever. A really great man.
