Jackery Explorer 240 & A Small 12v Fridge!

- We purchased a 1994 Shadow Cruiser Pop Up Truck Camper a couple weeks ago. It only has an insulated ice box so something had to be done to keep perishables cold for little trips. I didn't want to get into a large installation of a propane unit or even a wall mounted 12v fridge. I like to keep things simple, small, and light.
So after some research I decided to try a small Jackery 240 lithium battery and a 15L 12v fridge. The results were better than I had hoped for.

Thanks for your post. The data is very useful. I bought about the same fridge in 2024 and figure something about 750-1250 Whr with solar will allow me to stay out for 2-3 days at a time without recharging with shore power.
I have the same fridge but no Jackery. I just use my SUV's battery and a portable 40W solar panel. The solar panel seems to keep up with the fridge. Usually I drive some every day to get to a new camp spot plus at night I can turn the fridge down or off in the mountains. If I need to I can run the engine to recharge the battery first thing in the morning if it is getting low. Has worked for a few years this way. Great small fridge.
I have the jackery 1000 with the two solar panels and now I know I can safely use for a freezer…excellent video…thanks!

What most people do in the real world is to fill a travel fridge with water, meat, dairy, fruits, veggies, etc., usually taken out of their home fridge. Maybe they include a frozen water bottle or two, and some frozen meat. Nobody actually puts an empty fridge in their vehicle and runs it completely empty for 23 hours, so knowing the empty run time is interesting, but mostly a waste of 23 hours. It would have been so easy to do a full fridge test and found out a true run time.

Yeah,,,what sucks about Jackery is that the panels aren't waterproof. Didn't know that before ordering,,,smh, plus customer service sucks big time.

Depending on what temperature the food items were when put into the refrigerator, if they are at room temperature then it will have to work for longer to bring the items down to temperature therefore draining the battery faster
Nice video. I own two Jackeries 500. I would like to give you a word of caution when using your jackery with your portable 12v fridge freezer. Once you add items to freeze your unit may become more efficient with food items that are frozen and the jackery will shut down if it does not output anything for a couple of hours. All of them have an energy saving sensor something that shuts it down. Don't recall if it happens after 2 or 4 hours. Otherwise they are great power banks. I found out accidentally when I tried using my jackery as a UPS.
They changed it to 24 hours on all the new ones

Hey, great review, thank you! I have a tec question maybe u could help. We left the Jackery 240’s Outlet switch on in its back going on a 4 hour journey (nothing was plugged in)
We when we got to our destination and took it out of the bag it was very warm / hot & both fans was running !
The fans would have struggled to get air for whatever length they were on. Any idea if the heat was coming from the battery, the inverter or the fans them selfs?
As far as we knew there was a cut off built into it so I’m wondering why it wouldn’t have shut down ? I reset the battery and it appears to be working 100% , surprisingly fans seem fine etc. Thanks in advance
It was the inverter that caused the heat, that plus the fact that it was in a bag without ventilation added to the possibility of a cascading scenario where the heat also got the batteries hot and the fans motors also may have warmed up.
The inverter alone consumes around 10 W on it’s own! Always power off the electric socket when not in use. 😊
So this 1 jackery last 24h keeping food cold? Can I use solar to charge jackery while using to maintain this fridge

Could you please upload a video connecting the Thunderbolt kit to the Jackery?
I did some testing with my HF Thunderbolt kit and it worked fine. Haven't posted a video of it though, perhaps at some point.

Where did you get the mini fridge
You can find then on Amazon they run about $200-$250 online but from my experience I'd run a Alpicool C15 unit had 2 models of the c15 both where under $200 newest model I think i paid $160 on sale you can find them at travel centers or Amazon.com
If the point is to run the fridge , a lifeP04 is a better option ,. You can get a 100ah lifeP04 for $160 ?(So , much cheaper than a jackery ) And it will run that fridge for 4 days , just sayin
Agree completely. LifePo4 batteries are the way to go and what I use in my boat motor builds and other projects. This was just a test a while back.

I have that exact Jackery, did keep my phone charged. kicked off my 1 cup 12V coffee maker, doubt it works for much else.
I don't really find this helpful, you are testing an empty fridge. What you are testing is how long a battery can chill a volume of air and keep it at that temperature. A better test would be how long the battery can chill and then maintain the temperature when filled with bottles of water.
