On December 30th my AD called and told me they had my 36mm Datejust in and I should come and collect it. So I did. It looks as though my new watch is just like yours Ash apart from the clasp of the Jubilee bracelet. It took approximately 3 months from the day I expressed my interest in this watch to the time I got "the call". I am very pleased with this purchase, and with my AD.

The Oyster Perpetual (no date) is the oldest model in the Rolex catalogue by some margin.
It was introduced in 1931 and although it had many size and dial variations the essential DNA of the watch has remained the same.
BTW, in early Datejust models the date did gradually change rather than snap into place at midnight. The key thing was the change of date was linked to the watch mechanism. The Datejust was the first watch with a date window where the date automatically changed.

The DJ only works in 36 mm, as it was originally designed to be. The proportions are completely off on the 41.

Honestly i did the same thing in the last year. Sold most of my collection and bought an aqua terra small seconds, fully stickered in sales for £3700. I got it on bracelet and have a rubber strap too for summer and couldnt be happier. For ages i wanted an air king or explorer but the hype has taken the shine off rolex for me. Cut back the hype of Rolex and i found Omega suits the engineer in me far better.

    Ash,
If you had one watch, and it was the classic datejust, fluted bezel, jubilee bracelet variant, would you choose a black or blue dial?
I ask this knowing you love your blue dial variation, but if you had to choose one watch only for your collection, and it being a classic datejust, would you opt for a black dial over blue dial for versatility?
    Thanks Kindly,
    Mullard

“A very intelligent man…” you flatter me sir🤣. Only if the viewers knew what I was giving up.
Thank you Ash! The deal is done and I’m just waiting on the call. You’ll be able to see the watch on the 1916 channel I’m assuming(they actually just had the black dial one on yesterday). I’ve come to see this decision as simply going back to my roots. I’m finally able to obtain the watches I’ve wanted since before Covid and the Rolex bandwagon. Now that I think about it, the whole Covid watch RUclips Rolex thing was just entertainment for me. It just got me through till recently and what it did to others hasn’t happened to me. Going back to a simple, well worn and greatly appreciated collection is my version of time travel. I’m going back to the “normal” days of my horological interests. I day dream of the day some Rolex hater stands before me telling me every reason Rolex sucks and all I do is smile and laugh to myself.
    Thanks again my man👊
    PS
I’m really looking forward to seeing a re-waxing video for your jacket.… In 10 years. Thing is so bad ass

I love my Datejusts and will always encourage someone to pull the trigger on a vintage one. I have 3 1601’s including a Bamboo bezel variant from 1960 and wear them on their bracelets and on leather straps. The Datejust 41 is not for me as it’s so big, larger than a 5 digit Submariner. I’d encourage anyone to get a 5 digit Datejust so you get quickset date and see how you like it before pulling the trigger and spending close to double on a brand new one.

Contrary to the popular, my favorite Datejusts are the two tone 36mm. Such a classic. I believe people will regret not going for those. A lot of the two tone datejusts go for the same dollar amount as steel on secondary. Hopefully I can get one soon!

I don’t know Ash, I see used Rolexes everywhere for sale, with discount, sitting unsold for months on. I fear maybe the market is not the best for selling a Rolly, maybe buying 2nd hand, but many people have reservations about buying from the secondary market I don’t know why, always good to let someone else take the hit of retail price IMO.

  • @JamesAlexander14

Lovely timepiece Ash, but for me probably a little too aspirational. However, I am attracted to the Oyster Perpetual no date. I do think that there are less ostentatious manufacturers such as Longines, Cuervo Y Sobrinos, Omega and Tudor. Even Christopher Ward has models which can compare very well for less money.

They are very nice looking watches but IMHO, at 41mm, can only be carried off by a few people.
I used to work with a guy who would be able to do so. He was the same height as me (6'4'') but had massive wrists.
I would sadly not suit anything above 38mm due to my terminally skinny wrists. I am honest enough to know that 35 or 36mm is my sweet spot.

I read somewhere that inflation-adjusted price of Rolex in 1950s in modern money would be around $1500. So, I tend to think that anything more than that price would not add much value, hence for me this is a reasonable price for a decent watch.

@johnnysilverhand1733I disagree. Most modern mechanical watch movements are actually very reliable and can be very accurate. The problem is it isn't economic for watch companies to take the time to regulate inexpensive watches to high accuracy.
Seiko, for example, always quote awful accuracy for their sub £1,500 watches but it's common to find they actually run to within + /- ten seconds a day and can be regulated to even greater accuracy.
Of course, if we're really focused on accuracy, our connected divices are for all practical purposes totally accurate
