    Many years ago, I worked in a couple of psychiatric hospitals (for adults and children) as a male nurse. It was very interesting, but also pretty scary... because of the people who worked there. The doctors and the female nurses were way more disturbed than the patients, and these places felt unhealthy for everybody. I'll spare you the details, but let's say that I have a very low opinion on the psychiatric hospitals in my country. (since then, the government reduced the budget allowed to the mental health care, and now the situation is even worse).
    Anyway, Art therapy is really a great thing. According to my experience, it is more effective (and safer) than the drugs. Even I felt some benefit on my own mind while I was helping the therapist.

      Wow, Rolant, I'm sorry to hear that. Thank you for sharing your insight and experience on the state of psychiatric hospitals in your area. It does make me feel a little better knowing that Art Therapy was beneficial to the patients.

    Hey,
    I just wanted to thank you for how respectfully you treated the mentally ill. On my current job, I had to battle a lot of selfish people who wanted to bully kids on the margins. This is making me some enemies at my current job who don't appreciate my different approach. (ie: No bullying and adults should know better than to allow bias to prevent them from accidentally hurting others. Some regular people have a problem with that.) But hearing how you describe it makes me feel a bit better.
    I love the artwork as well. Your drawing's fangs are quite different than mine. But, I'm sure they're just as sharp. :)
    Best,
    Eric

    There are many types of outsider art, including outsider prose. As an outsider writer myself I agree mental illness isn’t something that should be romanticized. I’d give anything to rid myself of my own beautiful curse because life is wonderful, something to be embraced. What I have that helps me write all this impressive stuff also robs me of the most important thing-a happy, bountiful life. You only get one life.

    Thank you so much for this great vid. I have huge respect for outsider art. I find it is often very deep and meaningful. It stirs my soul far more than representational art. Just my opinion.

    The art is good. But it doesn't give me that primal fight or flight response that most of the mentally disturbed art gives me. Even art that looks pleasant from those people gives off an aura of pain. Truly haunting

    • @SketchbookTimeMachine
      @SketchbookTimeMachine  3 года назад

      Yeah, I agree with you, Benjamin, it's hard to fake that haunting / haunted feeling. Art made by people with a mental illness is in a world of its own. Thanks for watching!

      Documentary made a while ago, Daniel had recorded 1000's of cassete tapes with his thoughts art and expresion, It was life changing to see this film, it actually kinda sparked a mental breakdown in me, cause i saw SO MUCH of myself in him, hospital visits, trying my art, etc etc, but i was able to come back from the edge of maddness with my luck of being born in 1990 with the internet to be able to explain alot of the supernatrual stuff and not feel SO alone and isolated like i imagine SO MANY great artists in the past felt without the internet to connect with other people, or just have knowledge about alot of world and life lessons to be learnt instead of having to learn first hand and the damage and trauama that can sometimes go along with it,
