  • Northwind Perennial Farm is turning 30 this year and during last week's celebratory events I had the opportunity to speak to a group about my propagation process. Anyone can grow perennials from seed. It just takes a little know-how and persistence!

Hey Roy! Great knowledge and inspiration you’re giving out. Underline giving….you’re making an impact on the future of our world and inspiring a young or old newbie to gardening. Thank you! By the way, vermiculite is made from mica. It’s the golden transparent stone that is split into sheets and used to make arts and crafts style lampshades. When I was young and working at a garden center, we sold fireplace inserts in the winter months. Believe it or not, they had mica windows that you could see the flames through, and could be wiped clean with a towel when they were smoky.

I'm not even halfway through this and I had to comment. I have been waiting to see how you grow your plants. My wife and I start natives from seed and eventually plant them on our place here in Northwest Sands of Wisconsin. What you're offering here I think will help us out a lot.
On a side note. Your story at the beginning about how you and your partners have successfully run a business by not being business people reminds an awful lot of Daniel Quinn's (author of the best selling Ishmael) "tribal business" vision that he layed out in his book Beyond Civilization. He published that close to 20 years after you got started though.
    Thank you for your work.

Hello Roy, of all your videos it's the behind-the-scenes at the nursery I enjoy the most. Can I ask, do you not have any problems with rodents in winter when you cover your perennials in a blanket? This winter, I tried to cover flats of perennials with jute mats, but had so many losses from rodents eating away at the roots.

I'm signed up for a propagation class at my local university this weekend. I can't wait to see what they offer that's different. Hopefully some cutting propagation. As always thank you, so much for this video!

This was an amazingly valuable video. Thank you for sharing. Quick question… do you sow grasses at Northwind? And if so, do you sow using the same technique, with the 1020 flat and then clumps moved onto individual pots? Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

yes we do and we use the same technique.

Hi Roy, do you use plastic or shade cloth on your cold frames during the winter months? We're in Northwest Wisconsin and in the process of buying a cold frame. The plan is to start native plants from seed in them this winter and spring. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
