Valder also has pretty good synergy with air units like dragons or balloons since his groove can poke mages from very far then send his air units in, although stuff like that that revolves around army comps is usually entering pretty advanced territory.

Valder is a great character, he's strong without being extremely overpowered like Mercival, who is insta-banned every game
I'd say it's pretty unfair to claim a commander isn't overpowered just because he's weaker than Mercival. I mean how would you not be ?
