I was raised to value intellect and reject emotions, I was told that people and relationships are only a source of trouble and misery, so I thought I didn't need them... here I am today.. despite my education and job I feel empty, sad, with no hopes and no dreams... I realized that you can't feel the sweetness of success if you have nobody to share it with.

Good speech. Great delivery. Using comedy as a mechanism to make the listener more receptive to the message was a nice touch.

This does occur when average opinions are chosen, often more accurately than those of experts, like in Francis Galton's crowd experiment, but it only works if 4 criteria are present: Diversity of opinion-each person has private information such as their interpretation of reality, independence of opinion- not influenced by others around them, decentralization-each person has diff expertise, and a form of aggregating the opinions. There is a wiki article going over the topic-Wisdom of the Crowds

Great talk. The idea is to combine reason and emotion to improve humanity as a whole. The whole idea of life is survival and replication. We don't know what the purpose of life is but we are all hard wired to find the best possible way to survive, for ourselves individually first and then of other and replicate. So figuring out the best possible way using reason and emotion to survive and replicate is in humanitys best interest

How funny, the past few days I've been reading about the critical role of emotion in transferring acquired knowledge to real-world decision-making and problem-solving. And now TED uploads a relevant video to cement what I have just learned :D

How so? Individual biases can be checked and additional experiences can evaluate the information in different ways to create a more complete picture of the situation.

Checked by other people's biases. Combine that with the fact that groups strive towards uniformity and a social power structure, and you end up with something that's downright hostile to creativity and innovation. Groups reinforce stupid ideas and they dislike dissent. People are also more easily swept along into stupidity as part of groups, than on their own, and that's why groups tend to become radicalized in their ideas even in the face of criticism from the outside.

I love David Brooks but rationality does not belie emotion in the context he is speaking of. In simple terms, rationality can be defined as having consistent values and making choices that coincide with those values. You can value collective good or someone's love in the same way you can value money. Some values are just more difficult to quantify than others.

He referred to what i would have sworn was a well know topic of Signal Detection Theory.
These soldiers are the experienced soliders in those areas that know what "normal" is so well, that even a minor change alerts them to danger.

I hope you can stop whining. Get involved in something. Maybe with people who are less successful than you seem to think you are. Volunteer for Big Brother, Habitat for Humanity, or some other organization where you can interact with people who need a helping hand or guidance or both. It may help you find the humanity inside yourself and you can learn to share what you have. You need to ditch the 'Woe is me' attitude.

"united us into a higher being" sounds insinuative that married couples are somehow better than single or unmarried people.

I thought this lacked a pretty big part of nuance on many of the statements made. If you're going to say (for example) that groups are smarter than individuals, it's worth noting some of the the negative aspects that stem from group-think as well. In being so black-and-white, this talk lost a lot of credibility for me.
