Why Joe Barbaro is Lincoln Clay's Father Explained (Mafia Game Theory)

- Note: I understand that in the ending of Mafia 3 there is a FBI case file with a picture of Lincoln Clay saying he was born in January. The thing is this date is just a placeholder since "Lincoln was abandoned by his mother in 1947, a couple years after he was born" according to Father James in this video (2:26) so no one knows when exactly he was born. What we do know is he was born in 1945.
In this video I explain why Joe Barbaro is most likely Lincoln Clay's father and how Lincoln is Joe Barbaro's bastard son. I have included a Mafia 2 and Mafia 3 timeline which surprisingly fits with the theory. Did the developers of Mafia 3 originally plan for Lincoln Clay to be Joe Barbaro's son? Did they cast Alex Hernandez since he looks similar to Joe? Notice how Leo Galante looks at Lincoln and immediately back at Joe at 4:05

Its very clear that it's obviously joe's son. The fact that the story went out of the way to tell us that his father was italian, the fact that Leo even bothered to show up and talk to lincoln. He would not have bothered if it wasnt for joe asking leo to help his son out.
Now the only real question is how did joe and leo figure out that lincoln was joe's son.
I think an even bigger question here is why is Joe and Leo even together, when Leo ordered his men to kill Joe at the end of Mafia II. That's what I've always wondered lol

@@DanBrown0531 My theory is that Leo never planned to kill Joe. He knew that Joe was pretty good at what he does and would be a valuable asset to have. But he knows that Vito and Joe together create chaos and always get into trouble. So he seperated them so he could have both of their impressive skills while keeping them under control. I still wish Vito and Joe got reunited though since their friendship is one of my favorite friendships in anything.

If in the next game mafia 1 they make it to where you either hide big guns in cases, large undercoats or trunks of cars otherwise you cant carry it without hiding it leading to police trouble if spotted. Kinda like red dead 2s horse gun saddle system. I'm annoyed at pulling large guns out of my bum.

They probably scrapped this early in development but who knows.
Some people don't consider Mafia III canon at all so that would be a difficult thing to explain to a big part of the community.
KeoneArt this theory is a bunch of bullshit. Lincoln was born in early 1945, joe left empire bay in February of 1945. In mafia 3 Lincoln is at least 23 years old, generous, making his date of birth sometime in 1945, meaning he was conceived in 1944.
Lincoln also stayed at an orphanage that closed down in 1958, meaning he was at least 12 years old.
The reason I say this is because sammy Robinson wouldn’t take in a 9 year old into his black mob. So Lincoln would at least have to be nearly a teenager. Making him 13 years old, which means he is born in ‘45

@@barackobama990 Anything is possible since they brought Joe back. Even though the FBI game cutscene says Lincoln's was born "1945" does not mean it's true. Lincoln was abandoned by his mother so no one knows when he was really born.
Joe leaves Empire Bay in February 1945 so if he got someone pregnant in Feb/March then Lincoln Clay would be born Nov/December 1945. I did my research...

Especially Leo's glance at Lincoln, then at Joe, then back to Lincoln at 4:02 feels like the developers tried to hint it now that we know the context.
Very rarely have I seen a game theory that felt so authentic and plausible.

Knowing Joe Barbaro, there is probably an entire platoon of Lincolns running around, someplace. I like the theory; Joe unknowingly procreates an offspring that grows up and eventually saves the life of his best friend. A beautiful story of friendship bonds transcending the known and unknown. There's strong evidence for this theory. The only evidence against is the DOB Jan 1945 but that could have been inaccurate to begin with. Like, if he was abandoned and never had papers, then whoever found him would have no way to knowing his exact DOB. Jan 1945 will well within the margin of error, could easily be Dec 1945 or even early 1946.
And plus mafia has always had timeline and plot inconsistencies through titles, when Tommy dies in the original game it’s just two unnamed npc’s that kill him that later changed to Joe and Vito
Btw in Mafia 3 collectors editions, you got Lincoln statue that write "Licoln J. Clay" in the game the "J." Didnt apear, I think the mother called him licoln J. Clay bcause his father name Joe

That explains a lot about the character and why he reacted the way he did. I thought he seems like a combination of Vito (military background) and Tommy (Extreme loyalty to family and the people he loves) but now that Joe is in the mix hitting us with a triple combo. Makes me like his character more than I did before.
This is a pretty good theoryif you notice when Leo galante gets out of the car he looks at Joe barbaro smiles and Lynn looks at Lincoln clay maybe he was smiling because he was like. " that really is your kid" honestly it would also explain why they didn't just kill Lincoln clay right then and there .

The storytelling and voice acting in all 3 Mafia games is SO memorable. They had their flaws, but not many games all these years later I still remember SO MANY characters FIRST and LAST names. I never thought of this theory before, but WOW, you out their faces side-by-side and that timeline... YES I believe Joe is Lincoln Clay's father. Mafia 2 portrayed Joe as like the "walking penis." Apartment scenes, cathouse scene, club scenes, skyscraper scene, etc...

The only reason this can't hold up, Joe left town around May 1945. The "Time Well Spent" chapter opened in February 1945 and Vito narrated it took 3 months after his arrest to sentence him. Joe had to leave town shortly after that.
Lincoln was born in January 1945, so unless this one night stand actually was in Empire Bay and she happened to be from New Bordeaux and went back. This cannot hold up but the resemblance is strong, I'll give it that

I always thought Lincoln looked more like Sammy though, another thing too is. Father James said he thinks Lincoln's father could be italian. A interesting plot twist to Lincoln's history would've been that since Slavery / Jim crow was in that era, that sometimes you have people that were black / or latino who may have had light / fair skin that would try to pass off as being white to avoid being killed. What if Lincoln's father was really a light skinned black / latino that passed as white and joined the mafia and somehow connected to Vito or Joe, and got Lincoln's mom pregnant and decided to leave her before Lincoln was born because he knew that his new life of friends / associates would put 2 and 2 together and find out he really wasn't white. and that would put him, Lincoln and his mom in great danger. I like how this game really showcased how things were back then

I know this is a fun theory and all, but from what a checked in Joe and Clay Bio. It says Clay was born sometime around January 1945 one month before Vito came back from the War on Feb 8 1945. I'n *"time well spent"* it says Vito was arrested in Feb 26, in Vito's Flash Back commentary 3 months have passed after his arrest.
Which puts it around May 1945, Joe was present at court around this time and left not long after he angered Luca Gurino which got Joe a Mob hit which forced him to leave Empire Bay around May, just 5 months after Clay is born.
Now im not gonna rule out this possibility cause i find it an interesting theory. Either Clay's mom was in Empire bay around 1944 and met Joe. Or she had it with another Italian guy who was in New Bordeaux, as its stated the Marcano Crime Family Bio they came to power in around 1934. So Clay's father could be either a Random Italian guy, Joe Barbaro or a member of the Marcano Crime Family.

So say if this theory works., lets say Clay mom may have been a mistress or a prostitute and Sal impregnate her giving us Clay, he was abandoned at the orphanage in 1947 as his mom didn't what him for reasons. Right when Leo gets out of the car and sees Lincoln his face quickly goes into a surprised look right before he looks at Joe but only for a second.
Tony Balls specifies that Joe hid out some place "Down South" in one of those wall of text missions when you return. Just a very interesting note....it would be one hell of a twist, I gotta admit. The question is where the name "Clay" came from....doesn't sound very Dominican to me, Sammy's last name is Robinson and Father James' last name is Ballard

My grandma is from Santo Domingo and her surname was Matthew. In Samaná, Dominican Republic most of the people there have English names like King and Wilson

I see I wasn't the only one who jumped into the theory of Joe Barbaro possibly being the possible father of Lincoln Clay. When I saw the mafia 3 front cover at game Stop my conclusion was that it would be about after Clay finishing his tour in Vietnam. And possibly a game of vengeance possibly on a mission to avenge the murder of his father.

I usually do not agree with a lot game theories out there but this one I can confidently say that I do agree with. I always told myself playing this and watching other people play that Lincoln and Joe do kind of look alike and, the close up of Joe at the end there and the way he looks at Lincoln, I feel is to show the audience that he indeed is alive and well but also could be possibly saying that maybe he might have some hunch about Lincoln being his kid, regardless that it's no secret Joe has had plenty of one night stands, lol.

The resemblances are quite possible yet something holds me up - Lincoln was born January 1945, shown in his in files during ending cutscene, while Joe was forced to leave EB also in 1945 (dunno what month). It could've been stronger to be proven if Joe had been forced to leave in between March-May 1944.
January 45 is likely a false date.. Knowing he was born in 45? They may not of known the month so Jan 1st becomes the DOB.. Not uncommon then!

I think it's way more subtle than that. I think Lincoln's father is the white man who sat down next to him at the train station when he first gets back from Vietnam and starts talking to him about what it was like to come home from war. The one who ended the talk by telling Lincoln to stay out of trouble. The one who eventually the first to find what was left of Uncle Lou. I think the times being what they were he was too afraid to step up and be a father, but did keep some tabs on his son. Actually, now that I think about it, considering Sammy used to run hookers it's possible he knew Lincoln's mother and father. Maybe Sammy asked for some sort of pay off for the loss of revenue since the dude got his worker pregnant, which may have been how he even found out.
I could see Joe’s face resemblance on Lincoln, I believe this theory plus everything got to be connected since Mafia 2 characters are in Mafia 3.

If this were real this is how I'd write Lincoln and Joe's relationship, at first Lincoln actually is mad at Joe for abandoning him along with his mother, and Joe can't accept the fact that he is his son. But once they're relationship grows, Joe sees this an opportunity of redemption after the life he lived as he gets older.

@@kdmontana508 I think it's because when you look at Mafia, you look towards a mainly story based game. When you look at GTA, most of the popularity comes from their online gameplay. I'll admit, aside from the GTA characters, I forgot their campaign. Mafia really tried to produce an atmosphere that was sort of unique in a way because we didn't live during that time. As for now, when you look at Los Angeles, it's modern and something we are used to. Mafia also had a lot of characters that you stuck close to. Losing Henry traumatized me as much as the option of losing Roman from Liberty City. If you look at the original Mafia game, you get a whole lesson in the story with Tommy Angelo making the statement that those who ask for too much in life may risk losing everything and those who ask too little may not get anything at all. As for GTA, just buy a shark card. There's a lot of things I could be wrong about but there's something about Mafia that just keeps you wanting more.

Gta is where you go with the boys to fuck around and accept the story for what it is, a mostly parody of society but a great parody with a great story. mafia is where you go for a quality story about a era rich with charm yet an era where every choice has huge ramifications that have serious consequences.Gta is online eith the boys, mafia is for the story for the individual. I love both series, this is just my opinion on how I view them

It’s likely the deal that was struck between Leo and Joe was to have Joe stay away from Vito or else they kill Vito not Joe. Makes way more sense seeing in which how much Joe cares about Vito also they had a better opportunity to do it since Vito was practically all alone in New Bordeaux
Plus, Joe did fine without Vito! Really him bringing henry in is what caused the issues.. Tho Joe was just as much, prob more to blame for the war?
