This version of Bathtub Gin is why I have always categorized Phish as Triumphant Rock...

I love that y'all are "getting it" with regard to the Phish experience. It's not necessarily about the individual songs they play inside a setlist, but it's about the setlist as a whole... it's a collaborative experience between the crowd on a given night and the band. In the mid to late 90s you might only get 5 songs in the second set, but nobody is leaving complaining that they didn't get "the radio hit". Each show is a completely unique experience and that crowd leaves knowing that Phish gave them something special and personal.

Genius whoever suggested the studio version into the live version. I've heard both versions countless times but it was still super fun to hear the progression from studio to live and how it builds. Tension and release is a huge part of Phish. That shit is highlighted in this Gin and this jam just sounds so happy. I actually loved the part when his daughter grabbed an earbud because that was the literal perfect part she could have done that, such a fun and silly part of the song and one of the reasons why I love Phish.

I was in the front row for this Great Went Bathtub Gin. Before the song, Mike and Trey brought out canvases and a easel and spray painted some "art" I think I got a buzz off all the spray-paint fumes.

Generally speaking, Phish songs have their strongest heyday within a few years of their debut. That's why a lot of phans might give you grief for listening to say, an Antelope from 2014 instead of 1994.

About 16 mins in I started tearing up. I knew what was coming. Some of the most euphoric phish out there and the music I grew up on in my teens.
1997 is considered by many a peak for the band and the Great Went, a 2 day festival for only Phish with 80,000 phans, was an absolute highlight. This Gin is no doubt in the pantheon of jams.

The concert and venue they were playing was “The Great Went” (phish.net/faq/great-went ), the second of their big solo multi-day festivals that they threw, which was held at the Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine - which is practically the most northeast point you can get to in the US, and attendance estimates range from 65-70 thousand people (I was one of them!). This festival got covered in their 2001 documentary Bittersweet Motel, which also included their European tour of small venues plus their annual New Year’s Eve show at Madison Square Garden. Here’s the trailer for that: ruclips.net/video/i5DNybeSsIk/видео.html

I just shared a link that is not for the show I said it was. The set I was referring to 11/27/98 used to be in here and I can't seem to find it now. I will try to dig it up. Or I'll find another good one. You guys are awesome, I'm glad that you get it!

They absolutely will take you on some strange journeys. Weird Phish, evil phish, filthy phish, is a rabbit hole all it's own. Check Out 12/30/99 Mike's song for some scary red light trey siren jammming.

Love the reaction to the Famous “Went Gin”! However there is totally a video of this live performance. Yes, it’s not the best quality and the one that’s available on RUclips seems to be a patchwork from two separate recording sources. Regardless the audio on the video version is just fine. I haven’t seen the live video of this performance in awhile but I think it’s the one where Trey is wearing a Toboggan. I’ll see if I can’t find it and then I’ll post it below later....

The video quality of that version is so bad it distracts from the jam. There is no decent video released of the jam section

Just a friendly suggestion, how about a Y-jack and a second pair of headphones for your daughter. I'm sure she would appreciate it more if she was hearing the whole song. Trying to encourage the next generation. The Phish is great, They Went.

@@Sco3000 so wait, because the peak is relatively simple, it's overrated? Yeah, ok. Guess that's why they're the ones playing this and you (and I) are not (and before the retort: yes, I grew up playing the piano and have played the guitar for 20+ years). Having the physical ability to play something on an instrument is entirely different than creating it out of thin air, live on stage in front of thousands.
