My dad died young and unexpectedly in 1991. I found Offspring Gone Away a few years later and it really helped articulate how I felt in a way that i struggled to find on my own. I really made a connection to it and it is soooo different than anything else I have ever heard from the offspring. Last week my brother died young and unexpectedly. I could really use an Offspring Gone Away reaction right now. It would make me smile when there feels very little to smile about. Thanks.
I think a hard hitting smash it of theirs is "The Kids Aren't Alright" they definitely hit hard on young adult issues. This band was outstanding with great messaging in the 1990s.
Wickedly FUN Band that is still going STRONG. This is a very Southern California song. The Baggy Shorts era. The early 80’s through the early 90’s were very violent times from LA, the Beaches, to the Inland Empire, & San Diego. Not to mention Central California. The Gangs were going at it BIG Time vying for control. It has flattened out, a little, in most areas, but not all.
It wasn't that violent. 98% of the citizenry didn't even notice. The only reason I knew was because my wife was an ER doc at Harbor UCLA. If you didn't live in Inglewood, East LA, or Watts ... not an issue
Well@@theccpisaparasite8813define “not very violent”. Between 1985 to 1992 I worked as a Law Enforcement Officer in SoCal, so I guess my perspective is a bit biased. This is BY FAR my fav song of theirs, then Self Esteem. We could all learn from our Grand Parents favorite sayings like "If you do not have anything nice to say, don't say anything"
Great to see you guys getting some 90s punk/alternative rock in. I am still surprised that you still haven't reacted to any Green Day yet on this channel. That needs to happen. I recommend starting with Welcome to Paradise or American Idiot.
I remember when this came out (1994) and i played it full blast, summer's day, all the family around and my 4 year old niece going absolutely nuts and headbanging. Great memories, great song. The 1990's took the best of the 60's, 70's and 80's and mashed them all together.
Dexter Holland, the singer and primary songwriter, is a legit genius. He has a PhD in molecular biology. The title of his doctoral thesis is "Discovery of mature microRNA sequences within the protein-coding regions of global HIV-1 genomes: predictions of novel mechanisms for viral infection and pathogenicity." He also owns his own hot sauce brand.
this reminds me of when the song came out and me and my friend Cheryl would listen to this song and her favorite part of the song was when they said you gotta keep em separated so seeing amber enjoy that part brings back memories
The Offspring actually started as a hardcore punk band in the late 1980s; this was their commercial breakthrough in 1994. "Pretty Fly for a White Guy" was in 2000 when they went for a much more pop friendly sound and started headlining 20,000 seat arenas.
Absolutely the First Time hearing this!!!! --- I'm an (50's thru 80's) mostly rock fan and this was cranking ( awesome ! ) . This left me wanting to hear more so I may have to buy this CD to add to my CD collection !
This verse tells you all you need to know: By the time you hear the siren, It's already too late, One goes to the morgue and the other to jail, One guy's wasted and the other's a waste...Powerful. Another serious and deep song disguised as fun.
The whole Americana album is great! Gone Away All I Want I Want You Bad Let the Bad Times Roll There’s so many. The whole band is so underrated though they are successful. The new songs are good. Looking forward to the new album in October.
This band plays happy music to serious lyrics. "Gone away" is one of the saddest sings ever, but the music is happy. Five finger death punch covered it and made it their own and bring the tissues. Video is amazing.
For really early stuff my instant recommendation is "Dirty Magic" from their second album, Ignition. From the same album as this track, the title track "Smash" can't be missed. If you want to be really surprised, listen to "Pay The Man". That one will really catch you off guard.
For more FUN rock gotta check out "Electric Callboy", a mix of heavy rock, EDM and pop music. Like attending a heavy metal show and a EDM rave begins in the middle, they have not put out a bad song in 3 years. Start with "Hypa Hypa" to get the mood, then "We Got The Moves" or "Pump It" if you like some work out music.
One of the first bands/albums that I purchased as a teenager that changed my life! Along with Green Day - Dookie or Insomniac and Social Distortion - Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell or White Heat, White Light, White Trash and Bad Religion Suffer or The Grey Race and Rancid - Let's Go or ...And Out Come the Wolves. These are other bands and albums you should check out.

Opening conversation got me thinking-- You guys could do a live stream where each of you play songs for each other that one of you has heard already. Suggestions from each other, and from the viewers. Make an event out of it!
I used to work with The Offspring's bassist (Greg Kriesel) in the late 80's. He was in a different dept of the print company but I knew him because my best friend was his immediate supervisor. I remember he used to talk about his band but I didn't think much of it as I knew several guys who had been in bands hoping to make it. A couple of years later (1991 I think) my friend Russell (his former boss) called me up saying "Put on MTV right now!!"(this was when MTV still mostly played videos). I did and he said "Take a good look at the bass player" and I recognized Greg right away. It was "Come Out and Play", the video you guy just watched. I was blown away and glad to see them succeed. They had a lot of hits and this was their breakout song that made them. Too bad I never saw Greg after they made it big.
This is the first song I remember hearing and loving from The Offspring. It was all over radio when it came out - such a different sound at the time, it was great!
My intro to The Offspring was playing Crazy Taxi, I love that game to this day and still play it from time to time, and I've loved The Offspring ever since, I got to see them with Korn and L7 and they were a seriously fun band live, and their lyrics on all of their songs are deep and thoughtful, a great band.
One of my favorites from this group. And like you guys I first fell in love with the great music in this one. But after several listens, I started to hear the lyrics. And then I was really blown away by not only the music, but the deep meaning of them. Actually, a lot of their songs are deep, of have some sort of social commentary.
I musta rewound this song on the tape three times in a row daily for the first week. Yes TAPE. Thankfully it was the first song so it was so much easier! (Didn’t have a cd player yet)
My daughter was 3 or 4 when this came out and it was on FM radio so often. She and I could only make out “hey hey hey come out and play”. Thank you for the lyrics insight.
It wasn't on Tony Hawk 2 (which is a game I've replayed even recently and was obsessed with back in the day) but it was the ECW entrance theme song or Pro Wrestler RAVEN. Love seeing you two react to this one as it's always been a favorite. Hope you do The Interrupters "She's Kerosene" sometime. :)
This was a MASSIVE hit! Dropped in late high school for me and we cranked this out so much! Never understood what all the lyrics were until quite a few years later.
Fun Fact: The band enlisted their friend Jason "Blackball" McLean to deliver the famous phrase, "Gotta keep 'em separated." "[He] had kind of a distinctive voice," said Noodles. "He grew up in a Mexican neighborhood, all his friends were Mexican, he had the slang down, the accent. He was a Scottish cholo from Whittier. So we asked him to come in and do the line. He wound up doing it in the video, too." - this song was on Rock Band 2
And he still does the voice and is the hype man before all live shows. If you ever been to one of their shows they have the best stage turnover entertainment ever.
Just listened to this yesterday after watching their recent festival appearance in Switzerland where they had a collaboration with Yungblud on Self Esteem. It was great by the way. Gone Away should be next. They had a collaboration with Brian May at STARMAS this year on Gone Away. Fantastic song.

The Offspring has so many great songs: Gotta Get Away The Kids Aren't Alright Gone Away You're Gonna Go Far, Kid Hammerhead Kristy, Are You Doing Okay?
