- He's one of the best composers ...his songs are not just hits-they are standards.
He's from Tuskegee Alabama and I am from Montgomery...we crossed paths in 1973 or so...been crossing paths ever since! He's the best!
No one ever was in competition with MJ because he was out of their league.
Seems Lionel was envious of Michael's talent. Hmmm.
Ditto.
You beat me to it… Lionel was great but not MJ great. There was no competition
I got he meant that MJ always pushed him to raise his own bar.
He'd never lost his fame. Never will. Michael Jackson's name and music is known to toddlers, it's 2018 and he's been gone for 9 years. He's timeless.
True.my 6yrs old son loves michael jackson😊
Absolutely agree. I still can't believe he's gone
True, my little brother who was born after MJ passed away is a big fan now
Missing the point
This was a great interview with Lionel Richie, he is so right about everything he said. My heart still aches for Michael and Elvis, the people who should have protected them let them down, Elvis was never the same after his mother died, and Michael was never the same after the child molestation fiasco. I never believed and will never believe he would hurt a child, because he was child like himself. We should have done right by both of them.
Karen McDermott They both (Elvis and MJ) pushed away people who tried to protect them. They wanted “yes men” only. That was the recipe for their downfall.
@@Elena-er7zp No! At a certain height and under constant pressure you can t see the true earth below .
Michael Jackson died of a broken heart like so many of us
Michael Jackson will always be here in ours hearts and he will always be the king of pop
MJ was the Greatest entertainer that ever lived . .........' u go hate ' haters but MJ's music will live 4ever!!
"If you are famous, everyone is your friend" that man is so true🙏🙏
MJ forever in my heart!!!!!!!!
I LOVE YOU TOO LIONEL ! MICHAEL JACKSON IS A LEGEND! AND LEGENDS NEVER DIE ! NO ONE COULD EVER FILL HIS SHOES! HE ROCKED OUR WORLD! WE LOVE YOU LIONEL AND MICHAEL
So True Micheal Just Trusted And Wanted To See The Best In People ...God Rest Your Soul Mj ...We can Take Care Now !!
Ok but NO ONE can be a competition for Michael Jackson he is invincible
As a former security officer protecting Mr.Richie I can honestly say that he was the most down to earth human being I’ve ever had the pleasure of working for..He was very polite, precise in what he wanted me to do for him,and very comical his sense, of humor was great which made my experience working for him all the better..
The competition between them was beautiful, simply because it was their bond. They weren't competing for money, fame or fans, thet had it. They loved each other's craft and talent. Beautiful!!!
Michael Jackson music will live 4 ever
Every person going into the business should be REQUIRED to watch this at least 10 times! He's so right! Every single word resonates with such volume and truth! WOw!
Beautiful testimony Lionel Richie !!
MJ didnt change his inner core because of money. The more money he got, the more he donated to charity.
It's the media who doesn't even care about the goodness of Mj but focuses on ruining his life because of his looks and personal choices in life (that noone should care about because it's his private life) Media drag him down and those who are afraid of how much power he is getting as a black person.
How much a human being can take..
Michael is just human.. so many people hurt him especially those he trusted. Money is a factor. People who loved his money and fame..
BUT definitely money didnt change Mj's faith to humanity.. how many concerts he did for charity? Even when he was high with painkillers and mumbling.. he uttered "helping children". The money he will earn is to help the children.. That's Michael.
For him MONEY = HELPING PEOPLE
I agree with you totally. People always try to compare his drug(painkillers) addiction to other celebrities but his was beyond his control. He didn't choose to be burned in that Pepsi commercial and what ultimately killed him is those allegations that prevented him from sleeping. The reason why he had to take those sleeping drugs that resulted in his death. It pains me when people try to blame him for his death. I mean the man didn't even smoke nor took alcohol because of his religious background.
@Ana May Chavez.. .Concordo, em número, gênero e grau, com tudo que vc escreveu sobre Michael
Fátima Saídu...Exatamente, concordo com vc também
I love Lionel. Listening to him and hearing his voice...he feels like he's a family member. It's weird to say...(and I'm a diehard mj fan)
Lionel Richie was such a great friend to Michael ❤️ he understood him completely and he always stood by him. The last time they saw each other was a week before MJ died and they were supposed to be together again one week later to celebrate Lionel’s birthday.
I love this interview. Everything in life happens for a reason. There were definitely rock solid reasons Lionel had to take that 3-year period away from his career. As he mentioned, it ultimately saved his life. He's such a brilliant musician but more than that, he's savvy enough to know how to take care of his sanity and well being. I would love to meet with Lionel Richie some day and share with him, face to face, how I feel about him.
Wow Lionel is not only one of the best singers of all times hes also a very very smart man!
Wisdom is man's best survival gift.
Thank you for sharing Mr Carter SUNDAY August 27, 2023 2:30pm EST USA Lionel sang All Night Long as his Encore Song at the Wells Fargo Center Tuesday August 15, 2023 The Master Weaver The Creator Has A Master Plan
I am now 73 looking back on my life … can see how the decades of someone’s life changes … and so seems to me that in the 90’s Michael was scrambling to raise the bar on his past creations … and kinda on edge about it because his younger work was so intensely iconic … did he succeed in the 90’s? Maybe in a different way … however, in our 20’s is when our bodies are still growing and we are still innocent … so whatever we were doing back then was extremely special. And no matter how old we get, there is still that part of us we can access in our 20’s we want to do again, but our bodies & experiences don’t let us return. And when I have researched about ‘This Is It’ Michael wanted to do … despite the pain killers, not sure at 50 he could have pulled it off … and certainly not for 10 shows … and AEG’s demands for 50 would have killed him.
Wow, up to his death, people are using Michael to promote their new books, cds, reviving their careers, etc, by bragging about him being their friend. They realized Michael will forever be alive in the hearts and minds of millions of people around the world, who love him; while they are but a memory. One old female singer had a concert and called it “a tribute to Michael Jackson.”
Lol so true. They abandoned him when he's alive and after his death... yeah time to make money using MJ's name. And many still bashing MJ. These are coming from those who claim they're human. I'm amazed why they're still alive and I have to lose MJ. So unfair!!
this was actually a great interview
Great words, also great interview cs he let him talk.
The best Lionel Richie interview I've ever seen! 💯👍
Lionel is a fantastic songwriter & artist but Michael was the pinnacle of music & entertainment, love them both,RIP MJ.
The Commodores supported the Jackson 5 on tour in the early 70s. No one new who The Commodores were. Lionel kind of owes his career to Michael and his brothers as they gave him exposure to the public when touring. Lionel is extremely talented though. I wish Michael had a lightbulb moment like he did.
Pure wisdom. Thank you Lionel!!!!
Lionel...what a down to earth,guy!
This man ages like a fine exquisite Chardonnay and his words are just as intoxicating!
This few minute talk explains so much better than any documentaries i watched to understand Michael Jackson. RIP MJ xx
i feel the same way
I like them both. Michael and Lionel are two different acts. Lionel is more the musician, while Michael was more the performer. I think what Lionel meant by the competitive friendship is that he was always trying to be even bigger and better himself, creatively and in terms of success, because Michael was obviously the biggest thing breathing in the 80s. While Lionel Richie's albums worldwide, by comparison, never really had the same impact as "Off The Wall" or "Thriller", he still didn't have to hide with the number of top 10 hits he wrote.
YOu wrong Lionel in saying that MJ could not maintain his famous. MJ was able to maintain his fame because until now he is very famous.
Michael was NOT able to maintain his earned status in the 1980es. He was almost musicly dead in 1999 and that went on until 2008 - Thrillers birthday. Michael wasn't creating something new people could talk of, it was refurbished music he recorded 26 years earlier.
What about invincible? His 2001 album?
KingCorny93 how old are you I mean seems to be a teenager
He is famous Up to this day and the years to come.my 6yrs old son loves michael jackson😍
We love Michael Jackson The King of Pop
True
Wonderful interview very insightful!!!!
As mj fan, it is true. Mj rise so high he forgot to stop.
Rest In Peace MJ
He is right the day MJ got burned on the Pepsi commercial was a game changer.
That was a great interview, Mr. Carter!
What a wonderful interview, I have so much respect for Lionel Richie. Another artist that came to mind while watching this was George Michael, he did his level best to step back from his enormous fame in the early 90s, didn't give interviews to promote his product, didn't appear on the sleeve of his records or in the video's for the singles, didn't tour to promote his albums, you name it he tried to get away from that level of fame. The ironic thing is it wasn't fame that turned him to drugs it was the losses he went through after his partner and Mother passed away, his life got complicated after that in the mid to late 90s.
Great interview. Wonderful writer.
Great interview! And very revealing.
One of the polarizing interview's I have ever seen. All young artist's should hear.
That was pretty impressive. No wonder he was so well greeted at Glastonbury.
A life for music... leader of Commodores one of best funk band.. and he question is about Jackson...
This is probably some of the best advice u can get when one makes a lot of money!
Does Lionel really believe he was a competitor to Michael Jackson???? The Ego is no joke!
Don’t think he meant it like that. I got he saw MJ challenging him to raise his own bar.
He is also one of the artist out of a few I know that knows to control how to be rich & famous without being in trouble.
Who Lionel. Or mj..??
Lionel Richie looks good for his age. Good that he slowed down.
Perfectly put into words sir👏👏👏
“When you started out in life, you make friends, when you’re your famous everybody’s your “friend” “ I’m very aware of this and will not fall into any trap
lots of things to learn. Thanks for uploading
young & wise ! thx Lio !
I love this man
💋💋💋Great interview!!!
What he says is so true!
happy 71th birthday lionel brockman richie jr !!!!
very good assessment of MJ and very cool interview.
@nemoran you mj fans are a pretty delusional bunch. let me guess, he also only had 2 surgerys and his skin got lighter because of vintiligo, not because of vintilgo and him bleaching it white as a response.
@nemoran fanboys. i never said he didn't have it. i said it doesn't cause your skin to evenly get white. it causes patches of skin, so he evened it out with creme. this is an absolute fact. its also a easy to see the amount of surgery's he had by looking at his face over time. you can clearly see he started pretty early on and kept continuing until his face was basically ruined.
I love lionel. So real & humble. ❤🙏
Michael Jackson is simply the greatest
Last few minutes 🔥🔥
Awesome ❤❤
Y'all should behave. Every artist was competing with Michael Jackson. Lionel Richie was one of them. He's not lying
Best words ever!!!!!!
This is real talk here!
Poor Lionel u where never near or on Mj's bar :: Mj was on his bar looking down on u with binoculars/magnifying grass ( HELLO!! ) lol
Yes absolutely
You are nothing lionel nothing nothing in front of Michael Jackson
Lionel...sorry buddy...you never ever reached mike status.
If I could go back in time even though I was born in early 1986 I would stop Mike doing the Pepsi Commercial Ad, stop his surgeries, try tell him invest money for his vitiligo cure and told him not meet or trust Jordan Chandler, Wade Robson, James(Jimmy) Safechuck, Gavin Arvezo and would have told him to tell Oprah jump off cliff.
gotta endorse Jimmy's summary under the video and Lionel's take on Michael. There likely no one reading this who warped reality like Mike did. And he was one of thousands (perhaps hundreds) in the world who were compelled to look in the mirror each day and ask: "how do I top that?".
Lionel Richie knows what he saying
I love Lionel.
Hear you LR but where were you for MJ
Lionel Richie don't ever get a mention in his prime he was selling a lot of records along with Michael Jackson and Prince he was right there when he was the third man behind them to or number two Michael Jackson...1982 to 1987
He never had the charisma and appeal that Michael Jackson and Prince had.
“Dancing on the Ceiling” was huge and the music video that went along with it was played over and over and over. I always wondered what happened because it was like he was everywhere and then he just disappeared.
This is funny. I love this guy but please you can walk on the street just fine and you won't be bugged that bad. But MJJ had to pay make up people to change his whole look. I love how people try to say they are close to Michael Jackson. Just like Madonna did on the award show trying to relate her Fame with Michael. Please people none of you can ever come close to Michael Jackson.
Shaun Michaels you misunderstand.
I agree
Agreed
THE ONLY JIMMY CARTER I KNOW IS OUR FORMER PRESIDENT😉
RIP MICHAEL JACKSON 💞
Well said, lionel if you are famous you have a lot of friends, but but but but,
Noticeably so,, all those real entertainers (men & women) never had a bad thing to say about MJ,, except the ones whose after his money...so sad. 😔
Wise words.
5:19 I don't agree though with his relating them to Michael. Michael was persecuted and couldn't sleep. It was more severe anxiety than a drug addiction problem. When you can't sleep for a very long time it's truly harrowing. And then any drugs used for sleep are addictive.
My thoughts exactly, MJ's addiction was beyond his control. It had nothing to do with his fame. He never smoked nor took alcohol.
MJ WAS AND IS INNOCENT
Thank you
Lionel was not the same level with MJ but he did care for him .But he was right that MJs fame and the pressures of the business and especially the horrid untrue evil allegations and media destroyed him
Hiring your friends isn't always the best idea, either, because then you're basically paying them to be your enablers. Elvis had his heart in the right place, but hiring friends changes the dynamic.
it’s a double edge sword… keep in mind that hiring complete strangers has led to some terrible situations like some people being out to get you and plotting against you. hiring your friends or trusted people in your life is much safer in some ways
🌹🥀🌺🌷⚘
1:39 I see! So All Night Long is the harmony for Thriller?! Hilarious! 😂
Words of wisdom! Wellcome to the hotel Callifornia, such a lovely place...
MJ’s dependence on prescription medication didn’t start with the pepsi burns.. it started with the 1993 allegations because of the psychological trauma
Those allegations was what killed him.
it started with Pepsi but it started to get out of control during the first controversy
@@juanchohitdalottoNo it did not. He was treated for the burns and then was not on any pain medication after that. Even during the treatment he was given a chaser to prevent a high since he was a Jehovah’s Witness. After that he was only on lupus medication and nothing else until 1993 when he got a painful scalp balloon graft surgery to repair his burns scar. That’s when he developed a neuroma & needed pain medication and the false allegations hit at the same time and the psychological trauma caused dependence. He went to rehab and was clean until 1999 when he fell from the bridge & injured his back & needed painkiller again and then allegations hit again in 2003. MJ’s life was very difficult, it’s not that “drugs got him”.. for the most part he needed them and then psychological trauma would cause dependence. He could not catch a break. People are quick to blame him but they wouldn’t last a day in his life.
How can Lionel Ritchie compare himself to Michael Jackson? He was not a superstar. Michael was a superstar. Now that Michael is dead all these people go on television and talk trash about him or saying something wonderful and then follow it up with the negative. I hate them all.
He was a superstar, he was huge in the 80's and early 90's
***** But Mj's was from the 60's 70's 80's 90's 02, AND NOW
Lionel Ritchie is a superstar, but Michael Jackson was and still is a Multi MegaStar.
ann landers I wonder...If mj really had any real freinds..? 😢...his only world was his kids.
Lionel actually knew MJ unlike you. So I think he can say whatever he wants about his expierence with Michael good or bad. Nobody really has friends in the music bussines but thats just how they call it because its simple for the big audience. Maybe he got a few things wrong but its his expierence and his side of the story.
Lionel R. is a very wise man like Qunicy Jones. Michael had no home to go home to. That was his tragedy.
Wow
Lionel is 100% correct about the burn. MJ died at 50, it was a literal midlife crisis
ohh Lionel you are so cute, love your vocal style!
Lionel is a real friend of Michael. .don't be jeleous Brother. 🤗
Wait. : I don't even know he is talking about good or bad about Michael. Im confused . Damn🤬
Real talk
I think Lionel Ritchie forgot that he could never be a "superstar" because ALL superstars have what I call universal appeal - like Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and the Beatles. Lionel Ritchie is a talented musician but he has no physical appeal or charisma and, sorry, but you have to have that in order to get to the top and have girls SCREAMING. Part of the deal.
So do you even know who Lionel is because his record sales say it all.
+ann landers Lionel has plenty of charisma..btw in case you were not aware Lionel is a living legend!
I wouldn't go that far. "Living Legend"? Give me a break. @@dannysolo5148
Ann landers ummm either you’re young and clueless or you’re being bias simply because Lionel doesn’t happen to be one of your favorite musical artist. Nevertheless, allow me to correct your ignorance. Lionel has universal appeal just as Elvis MJ & the Beatles. He’s known globally just as the others and has a long stream of hits in which he wrote a large percentage of his hit songs that he had with the Commodores, as a solo act and hits songs that’s he’s written for others. He’s was ask to host the American music awards several times because of his charisma and audience appeal. I can go on but it would take too long. You have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about so have several seats and do your homework 📚 smh
Lionel is one of the greatest best selling artists of all time, maybe he sold 90Million records and MJ Sold 500 Million. But he's still up de mate. Can't compare MJ and Lionel R, they all fricking rich.
0:33 Why? Why is he a misunderstood musician? I don't understand that statement.
6:04 But anyway; the friends who were your friends before you were famous probably would have ended up dumping you if you hadn't become famous and had had some problems instead. So no, that logic's not sound. But then you don't have to be famous to have no friends. Many ordinary people have no friends.
Truth.
