Granted, he wasn't famous yet but i believe michael said shortly after his joining they started appearing in talent shows around Chicago and performing in clubs. John Landis is wonderful and a great director and a major part of thriller...but lets not pretend that Michael had no contribution to his success with music videos after all Beat It, Smooth Criminal and Remember the Time are also outstanding music videos with different directors the only constant is Michael Jackson.
I agree with you individualist Michael absolutely was a prisoner of his own fame. His life and what he had to deal with was unlike any other star on the planet. Some people view him as weak or fragile, but I believe he had a emotional and spiritual strength within him that was iron clad...I think he was certainly paranoid at times...who wouldnt be under those circumstances..he was trusting and he actually cared about people which left him vulnerable. Landis seems like a control freak and self-absorbed, because he had a similar attitude about Eddie Murphy between when they did Trading Places and when they did Coming To America, the latter of which was also one where it wasn’t Landis that was in charge. It’s quite telling because the Thriller short and Coming To America and the Black Or White short were successes for Landis during a time where his career was really hanging by a thread between the movies he had made that flopped and more importantly, the Twilight Zone movie accident.
