Since exams are being held online now, I've started cheating for everything. Am I going to go down this spiral until I become a failure of an adult ? Shit !!!!!
Abdoulie Jobarteh yup at least Ryuk is . Ryuk literally caused so many deaths by dropping the death note. Ryuk caused all this trouble just because he was bored.
That's true, light was burdened and he knew doing this would be the same as sacrificing himself. What people doesn't get about light is that he's selfless
SO FUCKING TRUE! THERE ARE AROUND 15 ANIME THAT I ABSOLUTELY LOVED OVER EVERYTHING ELSE BUT DEATH NOTE IS THE ONLY ANIME THAT I EVER RE-WATCHED. BAAAAHHHHHH SO FFGOOODDD
Fun fact: my friend had lights laugh as her ringtone for some reason and it went off in the middle of math when they were taking a test, so the room was quiet and all of a sudden *psychotic laughter* I think she turned it off before more than like two people could notice though
@@noctis1333 lol this comment was 2 months ago and i have my ringtone as his laugh now and my mom keeps telling me to change it before Satan comes out of my phone lol
Edit after 2 years of this comment: Spoiler warning. I feel bad for lights mother, her daughter became traumatized, her husband died, her son was KIRA and end up dying, she's been going through allot in death note :/
Dammit... i have nothing to add, but, poor miss yagami! She was such a good peson, she loved her husband and kids so much! I hope they had some family budget, because she was a household. And now she would need to look for a job to support her daughter
They do show a scene of her after Soichiro's death where she slowly droops her head down and starts bawling her eyes out and another scene after Light's death where she's walking Sayu around in a wheelchair and they both just have these hollow, emotionless expressions on their faces so I'd say she's dealing with it very rough to say the least, even without knowing Light was Kira.
H2899 I just finished death note about two weeks ago, and it is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. It’s so different from typical anime. Like you said, it transcends it. It’s my favourite series.
I think it was in the extra vol 13 of the manga, but I remember hearing somewhere that the author said that Light would've become the greatest detective of all time if he never found the DeathNote
i don’t know why, but i’ve always thought of Kira and Light as two different characters. Like Light was the person before the death note, and while he lost ownership of it. However, Kira is the person with the death note; the crazy, god-complex serial killer. I loved how they were also drawn slightly different, at least to me. Light was sort of drawn with a more innocent eyes, more round and sincere. And Kira was drawn with more angular eyes, more cunning and deceitful. it’s like you can tell if Light is Light or Kira just based on his eyes, and the way he talks. Light has a more sincere sort of sound, and Kira always sounds like he’a either lying or crazy, which he is. Anyway, i just thought this was cool lol
Spoilers The helicopter scene shows this very well. Before getting his memories he has innocent eyes(round) and kind cute smile. After he gets his memories ( when he says "i won") his face and eyes are more angular and his smile is twisted and eccentric .
Plus, in the beginning Light wondered if he should really be someone to judge upon others, but KIRA forced him to keep going So yeah, I agree Light and Kira are like two different people to me lol
Well, honey, he got caught. Hook, line and sinker, by a kid. Light's demise was just a matter of time at that point, because he sank in his own filth up to his maniacal laughter producing mouth. You are in ''team Light'', eh? I feel grossed out and terrified by your psyche. Seek help.
victoria martines Whatever , season 2 was shit . It's clear the manga was supposed to end when L died (light 'winning)'and that they were forced by editors to continue . People are entitled to their own opinion - just like you prefer L , he prefers light
I think he did actually like L, he respected how absolutely intelligent he was, absolutely, I think he even basically says that at one point when Near/Nier takes over. He just hated that L was trying to stop him. And that smile wasn’t (at least to me) a smile of pure satisfaction that L was dead, it was the pure satisfaction that he BEAT L, he outsmarted him. All he was obsessed with was winning.
@@Alex-bw6ydI think Light liked L and really was close to him, but Kira hated L and was happy he died. It’s just that Kira was more and more in control. Y’know?
@@eldaroses.g.r.7945Light is Kira, dude... Light always shared the SAME EXACT beliefs as Kira even when he had no memory of owning the death note... Light and Kira aren't different people. The fact is Light Yagami is a psychopath and he was a psycho before even having the death note, the death note just allowed him to accomplish what he already believed. He even got his father killed and had to force himself to act panicked and sad... He always has been an evil pos...
Light is genuinely one of the best and most well rounded characters I’ve ever seen. He’s genuinely such a horrible evil person and that’s one of the reasons he’s so good. It’s very rare that you get a terrible evil character, with no redemption arc, at all, much less as a protagonist!! He’s an absolute sadistic maniacal piece of shit and that’s why I love him.
his English voice actor is so fitting and accurate it hurts. I can’t express how well of a job he did. edit: i’m not saying i prefer the dub over sub in anime, because i don’t, but i was very surprised on how well this anime’s dub was. just giving kudos to the voice actor :)
It's okay, but nowhere near accurate. His speaking manner in English dub suffers from the ''rule of cool'' - he's constantly gasping in between words because, for some reason, westerners think it's a fantastic trait for a villain. Sigh.
Hárbrenn i think it was to add more of a dramatic effect which worked for me and got me invested into this anime, but i do understand what you are saying
@@floppyfingers Fair enough - if you enjoyed the anime, then that's what really matters. Me, I think he's gasping way too often; at some point it just starts to feel like Light's a heavy smoker that's still recovering from a marathon run, lol. But that comes from a guy who's hooked on original seiyū in all anime except DBZ (that's one English dub I can't argue against!).
I always felt like the scene at L's funeral was interesting. I always interpreted that moment where Light's face falls as him realizing that the way forward was clear, and the challenge would be gone. That he would one day grow bored again because the only person who ever made his life challenging was buried beneath him. Any victory he will have after this would be meaningless. That he realized, for a moment, that he cared more about having a worthy opponent than saving the world.
I say he knew all the shitty things that happened. A smart person who’s a narcissistic, shocker. But he had things stopping him from going psychotic. He had family, opportunities, relationships... humanity. We see him disattach himself from his humanity to become a god of right, to create a world of pure ness, a utopia. Would you, given the power, lose your connections to your humanity to create a utopia? I think I would, take one for the team. However these actions are completely horrendous I wouldn’t mind going down in history as the one who created a utopia by losing my humanity and killing the bad apples. God I love death note, so many questions and scenarios you can put yourself into, it makes you think
I mean, when he lost his memory he was sort of a nice guy (at least in manga...) In overall, make people's lives better isn't such a bad thing, tho the ways he chose were really evil I don't think he's psychopath, but maybe crazy bich
Yes, I was surprised when I saw it the first time and thought I missed an episode. It should have been included cause it's such a dramatic scene, other than the one at the very end. I only truly hated light at the very end when he laughed maniacly and revealed his twisted, narcissist by stating his true intentions in front of everyone. Also, I was disappointed that a main character like L didn't even get a funeral scene.
whats more attractive about the author is that he did not feel the need to justify light's actions by a traumatic childhood or some story where he is pitied to have turned from a good human to an evil one, rather just focused on the loop holes of mental human disorders.
L: That was a test. If you were thinking, you would realize that there are different types of soda, and you would have chosen a more specific drink. You just went from a 30% chance of being Kira to 83%.
Light was rotten from the start. Remember when Ryuk got surprised when he saw how many names light had written ? The moment light saw his test was succesful, he was gone.
I don’t think he was rotten from the start. I think in the beginning, he truly wanted to do good. Light isn’t evil. He’s a person who didn’t have a purpose. He lived just to live, going through the motions expected from him. He had the perfect life. Anything he could dream of. He was a handsome, popular genius, with the perfect family and a perfect life. But he had nothing he truly cared about. Nothing that interested him. His schoolmates were boring and beneath him, his studies were boring and beneath him, sports lost his interest quickly, he succeeded at everything he touched without much effort, and even his family became dull after a while, none of them truly capable of reaching his level, none of them able to intrigue him or engage in a meaningful conversation with him. He loves them, sure, but they’re just... there. He did have a slightly deeper connection, I think, with his father, through working together and Lights appreciation of his work as a police officer. And when you succeed at everything you touch, your view of the world becomes... simplistic. There’s only right and wrong, success or failure. When you never have to make a slow, gradual progress, anything less than great looks like a failure to you. So it’s not all that surprising that when light gets a tool to make the world right, in his opinion, that he would latch onto that as a new purpose. No one in his life was ever truly his equal, so why wouldn’t he think it’s true to the rest of the world? If he’s superior to others, and has the power to make things right and turn the world into a good place, why WOULDN’T he want to use that power to shape the world? And if he finally found something that could be interesting, a purpose, a meaning, after all those years of going through the motions, how could he not become obsessed with it? How could he not make it the focal point of his life, if it’s the only thing in them that isn’t incredibly dull?
@@cas2762 yeaaaah... the simple fact that he decided to kill someone without given anyone a chance to redemption thats the end of it. Light had these feelings from the beginning, just needed the Notebook to manifest themselves. Just because you think you are better than everyone doesn't mean you should try to shape the world as you see fit. Especially since the dude was barely in high school, as if he couldn't wait a year or two to find people at his level he can relate to, he was smart but he was definite not mature and he was definitely naive enough to think that what he was doing was true justice. Anyone who thinks that they can change the world by killing people obviously isnt smart enough to look at history.
I gotta agree, Light may have thought his goals to be noble, but do good people go around autistically screeching about how they will create a new world order and rule over it as a god? Do they kill people following their own sense of justice, then crow victory over them as they are vanquished? Light really is what you would get if a Social Justice Warrior actually had the power to kill anyone they please anonymously. For all of his intellect, he is so mentally childish in his sense of what's just that he is incapable of questioning his own actions. Ryuk even warns him when they first meet that if he kills all the criminals, he'll be the only bad person left. Light doesn't even stop and think about what the shinigami is trying to tell him, that if he goes through with his plan, there's no way he comes out of it with his sense of morality intact.
He felt horrible about the first kill, but it’s proven that the death note changes people. Hell look at the first episode or the first volume and you can tell how he changed by the killings. We are expecting him to scream when he saw Ryuk yet he surprises us. That’s when his mannerisms change, that’s when he becomes Kira
Plus rember when he loses memory of said notebook and how his mannerisms change, actions and even his eyes! That was the arc that implied “this is what light would act like if he didn’t find the notebook” which I got giddy about.
What I find really interesting is the moment when Light has lost his memories and is faced with the possibility that he might have been Kira, and he seems genuinely surprised and questions whether he could really go that. Again it supports the idea that the death note led him down a path that completed changed him or at least brought out and facilitated traits latent in his personality
Yea there must have been some evil inside of him and the death note just brought to the surface what was already there. If a person is truly good, i dont think even a death note can make them that evil
@@BangtanFF disagree there is nothing like truly good like what can you call good its just the perspective of the people just like religion people, people did alot of things in the name of religion but now they are bad , there are alot of the things that's bad in religion, but you are told its right and eveyone does it until someone comes up and saying something about then people think about it and if he is able to send his message through he will make a change, now that will be the new good that's all i have to say there is nothing that is truly good , good of bad keeps on changing as times passes what maybe good now will be bad later
The history of Death Note is about entertainment and boreness. Ryuk goes to the human world because he is bored in the Shinigami world, Light is bored because "every day is copy of the previous", L is a detective that only investigates cases that interest him. And at the end, Ryuk kills Light because he is bored, it's no more entertaining. Light, L, Near, Mello and everybody were just entertainment for Ryuk (just as is for the viewers).
@@WolframiteWraith he was never seen as socially acceptable. Everyone was poking fun of him or talking about his strange habits. And let's not pretend that he was some sort of saint
@@SingingSuperstar28 I never said he was a saint. Yes, L was eccentric but he was also a valuable genius that was deemed to be 'in the right' in his quest to catch Kira. That's what I mean by socially acceptable.
When I first started watching Death Note, I was like “why are people saying this is in the horror genre?” I look back to that and still wonder wtf was going on in my head.
I think the thing you're missing here is how Light changes during the arc where he loses his memory of the Death Note. I think pre-Death Note, Light was less frustrated with the world than just going through the motions but with no sense of his own limitations because - as you point out - he's meet all of society's expectations and is never questioned. It is an interesting question whether or not more human connections could have saved his soul. For me, it looked like Light was hopelessly corrupted beyond all hope of redemption by the second episode. There was no way he was ever going to have a really human connection AFTER declaring himself a god. The reason Light went evil is because he wasn't humble. He had no sense of his own limitations. Upon being given the power to kill nearly anyone he had the following delusions 1 ) I believe this power can be used for good 2 ) I - a child who has done nothing until this moment except make good grades - believe I can avoid any negative consequences of using this power. Maybe if prior to getting the note he had a relationship he valued enough that he'd at least think twice about compromising through deceit (or also the struggle to maintain such relationships reminded him of his limitations) , he may have rejected the Death Note
To be fair? Light also helped his father and the police on cases in the past. Light had also engaged in sports and is implied to have been groomed to be the new chief of police to succeed Soichiro Yagami. Light is effectively a child of the elite, who would effectively have an extreme personality of which molds society.
@@blanknames2920 but here's the thing, while good came out of it, the ends do not justify the means, not to mention, while Light started out with good intentions, he later became a crazed megalomaniac.

I've never related more to a character. That's why the ending is trash. He should have won, if not for the sake of originality! The writers caved like bitches. I am Light Yagami.
To everyone saying that when light lost the death note, he wasn’t himself and he changed untill he got the death note back No, he turned into light yagami. When he regained his memories he turned into Kira, the psychopathic god-complex serial killer.
It's sad to see someone lose their grasp on reality, even more so because they never made meaningful relationships. I think a lot of people have this problem but eventually find someone they just hit it off with so well that it creates a domino effect allowing them to find more and more people they can connect with. But what happens if that first companionship never happens? Honestly this feels like a message specifically to Japan's culture of having multiple facades; the one for the public, the one for your relatives and acquaintances, and the one for your close friends and lovers. It's almost exactly like he never had someone to shed his mask off to and in turn just went through life with expectations mindlessly like a drone until something different, very different in this case, happened by finding the Death Note. The Death Note can be substituted for anything that society might deem inappropriate, and in some cases, sadistic. From the crazed stalkers where the victims don't even know their stalker, to the death obsessed maniac who found joy in seeing lives end. I might be overthinking or overreaching here, but I do appreciate videos like this that allow me to examine and theorize about various topics. Humans are a lot more interesting than we give ourselves credit for likely because we are human and tend to see and speak with each other so often we're desensitized to this.
I completely agree. I remember my first time watching through Death Note back in high school and being so intrigued comparing the anime to the real world and thinking about the way people think, how the human condition is and the way relationships work. Morality, ethics, ect. I love your analysis(:
Yeah, it sure is interesting and intriguing. All the possible theories, paradoxes, comparing and contrasting a fictional anime world to the real world also gets you to think and analyse certain aspects of morality and ethics. It's fascinating and extremely fun thinking about these things, fascinating to such an extent that you simply cannot describe it in words, and would actually have to experience this flow of theories that your brain is coming up with yourself. Just by simply watching death note you can actually consider different angles and views on life, how every day is in fact, technically just a copy of another, and so we should all strive to not make every day just a ''copy'', but rather try to make some sort of change in the world. Although obviously our purpose does not need to be one of malevolence and murder. But we can see that yagami believed that what he is doing is right, and to some extent, what he was doing could have been considered right. Since the law was made by humans, and was done to maintain order and peace, the law is technically not something absolute or definitely right. Therefore the uncertainty of the fairness of the law is what initially caused yagami Light's desire to change the world, he knew that he is breaking the law, however if he didn't turn into a complete psychopath and kept only killing the worst criminals all over the world, what he was doing could have been also considered to be ''right'' by the majority of Japan, despite him breaking the law. It just shows that people don't really care about the law when it comes to something that genuinely feels like a better choice. The law is there to maintain order and keep everyone happy, but what if somebody broke the law and became a serious criminal, but for a good cause and at the same time causing a country to gain 0% crime rates and making tens of millions of people lead a happier and safer life? Would a government overlook someone who became a serious criminal if he was the cause of the country becoming the safest place in the world? Making everybody happy and even making the government to save a TON of money? Or would they still consider the current law to be the best choice to maintain the country's current economy, infrastructure, GNI, ect ect... It really is interesting, would we abandon the current law if there was a better alternative? Or is law something that will stay no matter the circumstances?
Sometimes i wonder what i'd do if i got that kind of power. No relations and a reasoning for staying in reality.. But i guess i would not want to come in shinigami hell so i'd throw it away x'D
still confused why they didn’t keep L’s funeral in the anime like that scene was so powerful and could have added to the storyline AND THE LAUGH COMPLETES IT OMG
It was an alternative ending where light won and gets killed by Ryuk also saving lights maniacal laugh for the end is better since it shows how much he truly lost it
The last episode, he somehow knew he had lost. After everything, he still was beaten by the world. And he realized this, he understood, but he refused to believe it and managed to actually think that he had even though he also knew he didn’t. He was running with his arm fucking bleeding from a blade, stabbed by none other than Matsuda, his coworker! And then Ryuk makes it worse by forcing it all to end. Writing Light’s name, saying it was fun while it lasted, it makes me sob. Light was so simple in the beginning of the series, and then he transformed into a monster who didn’t realize what he had become. Ryuk is the one who saved the day, but Light really went through a lot. It was never his intention to become what he had sworn to destroy, but his god complex and insanity that came from using the death not ended up being the cause of his own death.
ME TOO I admired both Ls and Kiras way of thinking and how smart they were.I sobbed for multiple days without end and I still get nervous when I see anything having to do with deathnote.
in the manga we see how Light is no different from the humans he's killed. he begged Ryuk, a god of death, to kill everyone in the wherehouse. Ryuk said sure, and instead wrote Light Yagami. Then we see the pure deconstruction of someone who claims to call himself a god writhing in fear and desperation. Light's last words in the manga says it all how he is no different from everyone else he has killed. "Shit"
The name "Light Yagami" (Moon Light) represents the facade the protagonist shows throughout the series. "Light" is a word that is viewed as purity and morality. Something that is good. The opposite of "dark" or "darkness" that have negative terms as evil and bad. The "Moon" part of the name represents the fake notion of light being produced by the moon, when in actually the moon is only mirroring the light of the sun. By this understanding one can say Light Yagami isn't actually good, he only creates the idea of it to hide his true nature. I don't know if this is why he was named that way, it's just my hypothesis .
iirc wasn't the whole light crying at his dad's death all a facade? like didn't he only want his dad to kill mellow since his dad had the shinigami eyes?
@An_epic_gamer_xD I mean I haven't seen my annual dose of death note yet so I don't remember but I'm sure as insane Light was at the time he'd do as necessary to get all blame off of him at the time
Do you know the novel "L change the world?" It plays in a different timeline where L wins and he writes his own name in the death note and the whole novel a countdown to his death and he has to solve one last case. However at the end there is a part where he visits Lights home and what follows is a passage that goes: " 'Light was killed by Kira.' That's the sad lie he had to tell Sachiko and his daughter Sayu to explain his death, because he didn't want to burden them with the truth. But now Soichiro too believed, that in a certain sense, Light was actually killed by Kira." Acutually I don't really know how this ties in with your video, I just thought it was an interesting part of the novel, that i believe was somewhat true.
@@vivvy_0 you can't kill someone whose name was already written in the death note , he wrote his name and mentioned that he will die at a specific amount of time so that light can't kill him so he can win
@@shehabgamal8640 i know its an old comment lol but isn't there a rule that says that the user can't extend his/her lifespan by writing a date in the notebook?
@@anonymousman4808 He didn't "expand his lifespan." Say I wrote your name 'anonymous' in the death note to die on 31st of January, 2020. You would only die on 31st of January, 2020 and if anyone writes your name to kill you before that date, you wouldn't die ; this is because your death has already been specified for another day. So, L effectively uses this to buy himself more time and immunity so Light wouldn't be able to kill him until he solved the case. Hope that helps!
I think if Light and L would have met in different circumstances before Light got the death note they would be real genuine friends and it would have changed them both for the better
My first was dragon ball and pokemon when I was 3 I watched death note when I was 8. You didn't need to know this, I don't know why I revealed this either. Just take it in as irrevelevant knowledge I guess
Death note is a modern retelling of the classic ethical argument 'Gyges' Ring', and this video made me make the connection!!! The story goes that Gyges, an upstanding man, finds a ring that makes him invisible, and he immediately uses it to do all the things he couldn't get away with in the real world - stealing and so on. It is an argument against the innate goodness of man, where it says that many people are only just because they can't get away with being unjust. And as soon as they have the means, many will choose to take advantage of it. Meaning, humanity is fundamentally flawed at it's core, it has the potential for evil. It is mentioned in video that the death note is an enabler that allowed Light's preexisting potential for evil to grow into something tangible -- and the bit with the argument that many people could become something unthinkable if they had a means without punishment. The death note is Light's invisible ring. And he falls just as Gyges did in the classic story. And at like 12:40 [The Psychology Behind Light's Laugh] it nearly explains the concept of the classical argument WORD for WORD.. just wow. Big applause from me
That whole giving into temptation speech gave me an "Aha!" moment on why Ryuk loves apples and Light keeps feeding him. That's some good symbolism right there.
People need to hear the italian dub laugh, its half maniacal laughter and half grotesque sobbing. The break of his sanity and identity is so gripping with the crying
You are correct! Light Yagami=Toothless the Nightfury. Light is a hero and does care. Light sacrificed himself in episode 1 to save the world. In episode 2 or 3 when Light kills Lind L Tailor, L threatened Light that L was going to kill Light, Light did try to team up with L but L refused on TV. What was Light supposed to do with everyone against him? Lie to survive. Psalm 82:6-7 God says that we are all gods but we all die in the end. God(Jehovah) is the most high God. Light is a god like everyone else is. Light used self care to keep going on his mission to save the world and Light does not have any brain disorder. God created us all with purpose and chose us. Light smiles because he survives and is able to save the world. Light laughs because he is scared and laughs at how stupid people are trying to kill him for no reason by not seeing his perspective while not taking the time to understand him. Light wanted an apology with all the threats and beatings that happened.
I always thought light's laugh at the end when he was caught was of disbelief as if saying "i got caught? I lost? I'm a god! Don't judge me! I saved the world!!" cementing how far he had fallen as a so called hero.
"If you ever see a piece of weird characterization from a story -someone- in the future, maybe give it a chance and try to understand it, because it might be more important than you think....because at the end of the day, more often then not it can be *_criminally underrated_* " The way this can be applied to the real world as well is scary and kinda genius ngl
I'd also like to add that through the whole series, from beginning to end, Light has proven himself to be a master mischiever, by lying not only others, not only to himself, but to many of us, the audience, many of who watched the series until the end including me, actually rooted for Light, waiting for him to redeem himself in some way once his plan works out, some of us were actually waiting for him to do what he promised, and bring justice to this world, and forgave him for so many of his awful acts, as we told ourselves it was probably for the better In the end, the series itself had to show us how much light has deviated from the person he was, and how we ourselves have been following this complete lunatic this whole time, a criminal, bound to die in shame for consequence of his acts, just like it happens all the time And for some of us, we could not accept that Light, the god he made us think he was, could just die, due to a human mistake like that... In a way, he made us another bunch of his Kira supporters
@Jishnu Suresh yeah me to i always see ryuk is a symbol for audience who want to see excited think to happen that why he follow light and just there to watch

I think if Light had met L before he found the book (which could have happened he helped the cops out in his spare time) he would have got that friend he needed.....but he killed him. DN is my fav story in all of anime. Thanks for this one Soul.
I know right! I love Death Note because you realise that there are so many paths that Light could've taken if only things were slightly different... and I think that goes for us as well. Small coincidences in life can be extremely impactful (pretty much the butterfly effect). Anyway, glad you enjoyed!
We even see it when Light loses his memories to a degree. Damn i wish there were more great rivals like L and Light in Anime, well ones that aren't based on a physical fight at least. If you can think of some man that would be a great video. :)
Light took it upon himself to rid the world of it's burdens. Whether you think this was an act of evil or an act of heroism you can't deny that Light deserves some admiration for coming to that conclusion so quickly and acting upon it. Hell if I found a book like that my mind would race with thoughts of morality, ethics and mostly the supernatural but Light maybe hesitated for 1 sec before knowing what he wanted to do and how he was going to do it without thought of the consequences. That my friends is either true arrogance or narcissism or both. At the end of the day this anime is just another shining example of how power can corrupt even a genius mind. Light wasn't a God but he was a hell of a character and his laughs are just the sprinkles on the ice cream.
Completely agree. I love Death Note because of the philosophical debate it brings forward. Light probably was the only one who could've gone this far. Was he in the right or wrong? It's very nuanced but it depends on your perspective.

Personally, I think of Light and Kira as two different people. Because when he lost the death note, he became Light Yagami again not Kira. Kira was a maniacal psychopath while Light was an extremely brilliant person. However, that's just how I view it.
And, in a way, you would be correct. Light was corrupted and psychologically damaged after first using the Death Note. He justified killing the first two people as a way to cope from the guilt. Essentially, it boiled down to: “I’m perfect, as everyone tells me, and can’t mess up, so killing them is the right thing to do since it’ll make the world a better place!”
Thanks for the shoutout. It's only the beginning, but Congratulations, Soul, on 50k subscribers. I've got quite a ways to go, but I'll get there too. And soon. By the way, great video. Death Note is one of the most well-known anime and as one of the first I saw outside of Naruto and Dragonball Z, there's a good amount of nostalgia with it. Thanks for making a video from such an under examined perspective, it shows you're really growing as an essayist. Anyways, hope you're doing alright. Next, we're going for 100k. I'll meet you there!
15:13 to 16:07 Is pretty scary, becouse it's 100% true for all of us. 2 other instances of crazy laughter that comes to mind: Eren's laugh/cry at the end of season 2. When Walter White is going crazy, once Skyler gave a huge amount of their money to Ted. Though these are more mental breakdowns. Anyone has any other examples?
One of the best videos I have seen in so long. This story was written almost two decades ago, but its thematics and deeper implications for our societies never fail to ring deep. If something like this can so believably happen to a prodigy with a magical diary, you bet it can, has, and will continue to happen to our politicians.
At some points during the show where Light would do something super complicated and it would work, like with L’s death (as sad as it was), the death of that one bus hijacker, or the death of Ray Penber, I always kind of smiled to myself and thought, “Brilliantly executed.” I have this thing where no matter who the main character of a show is, I root for them if the story is from their perspective or focuses on them the most. Light’s not even my favorite character in the show or the one who I thought had the most amazing or fascinating traits, but I still went right along with everything he did.
Yk, if light worked alone, without misa misa or any other idiot interfering, he would've won. Like after L died, i lowkey wanted light to win and kill everyone
@@nova-qs6th yea it was a very impulsive move and he rly wasn't thinking straight, but i mean i guess he learns from his mistakes? Lol idk, but chances of him winning still couldve been pretty high
@@yandereboyenthusiast8149 nah, he still managed to kill L. He got more intelligent and learned thru his mistakes as the show progressed. His mistake, which lead him to death, was trusting Mikami.
Great video but why did you fail to mention the Voice Actor? A lot of the credit of the point you've made in this video goes to Mamoru Miyano, he did an amazing job and nailed it each time. I mean, I haven't seen the Dub but it could be that Light's laugh doesn't seem right in the English dubbed version, or even cringey perhaps? Or maybe even a complete mood killer? I'm just assuming obviously because I've not seen the Dub, but my point is that it depends a lot on the voice actor too, for the laugh to be criminally underrated, or a complete failure.
In my opinion, Light's English voice actor (Brad Swaile) is the superior actor and not at all "cringy". Perhaps it's because I watched Death Note in English first, but his Light Yagami will always be THE Light Yagami for me, and his laughs are central to that. Compared to how intelligent and friendly to listen to he usually is, when Light laughs, he sounds truly deranged. Not to bash Mamoru Miyano at all, I think he does a fine job, but his laughs always felt more subdued, I would say, at least in comparison to Brad. Miyano just doesn't sound like he's going all out in the same way that Brad is. This is nowhere more apparent than with Light's final laugh in episode 37, to me at least.
The English Dub may be good or even better but let's supposr the laugh sucks ass in some other language's Death Note Dub, like French. In which case the point made in the video would no longer hold true, due to the poor quality of that Voice Actor. Hence, the voice actor is worth mentioning because a lot of the credit goes to them.

i don’t know why, but i’ve always thought of Kira and Light as two different characters.

This feels insane to me, did they really cut this out? This was literally the very first scene I ever saw of Death Note.
whats more attractive about the author is that he did not feel the need to justify light's actions by a traumatic childhood or some story where he is pitied to have turned from a good human to an evil one, rather just focused on the loop holes of mental human disorders.

That’s when his mannerisms change, that’s when he becomes
Kira
Plus rember when he loses memory of said notebook and how his mannerisms change, actions and even his eyes! That was the arc that implied “this is what light would act like if he didn’t find the notebook” which I got giddy about.

What I find really interesting is the moment when Light has lost his memories and is faced with the possibility that he might have been Kira, and he seems genuinely surprised and questions whether he could really go that. Again it supports the idea that the death note led him down a path that completed changed him or at least brought out and facilitated traits latent in his personality

When I first started watching Death Note, I was like “why are people saying this is in the horror genre?” I look back to that and still wonder wtf was going on in my head.
@Beech because this shit is horrifying. especially light's personality.
It’s not an outright horror as much as it is a psychological thriller.

No, he turned into light yagami.

I really did love this comment. Thanks.
All the possible theories, paradoxes,
comparing and contrasting a fictional anime world to the real world also gets you to think and analyse certain aspects of morality and ethics.
@@-Aexea- i wonder what yagami would do then. would he still try to kill him if he knew he was L?
Sometimes i wonder what i'd do if i got that kind of power. No relations and a reasoning for staying in reality.. But i guess i would not want to come in shinigami hell so i'd throw it away x'D

"Shit"
The way he scream "I've completely won. I win" jesus

You're right
Spell Yagami backwards :))

Do you know the novel "L change the world?" It plays in a different timeline where L wins and he writes his own name in the death note and the whole novel a countdown to his death and he has to solve one last case. However at the end there is a part where he visits Lights home and what follows is a passage that goes:
" 'Light was killed by Kira.' That's the sad lie he had to tell Sachiko and his daughter Sayu to explain his death, because he didn't want to burden them with the truth. But now Soichiro too
believed, that in a certain sense, Light was actually killed by Kira."
Acutually I don't really know how this ties in with your video, I just thought it was an interesting part of the novel, that i believe was somewhat true.
Greta Pohlen well it is confirmed that when light lost to near they said to his family that he was a key to find kira but he died at the end.
Why would he write his own name in the death note?

And at like 12:40 [The Psychology Behind Light's Laugh] it nearly explains the concept of the classical argument WORD for WORD.. just wow. Big applause from me
Yep, it's really evident from like 13:50 onwards. Just rewatched that bit to find the right timestamp

I'd also like to add that through the whole series, from beginning to end, Light has proven himself to be a master mischiever, by lying not only others, not only to himself, but to many of us, the audience, many of who watched the series until the end including me, actually rooted for Light, waiting for him to redeem himself in some way once his plan works out, some of us were actually waiting for him to do what he promised, and bring justice to this world, and forgave him for so many of his awful acts, as we told ourselves it was probably for the better
In the end, the series itself had to show us how much light has deviated from the person he was, and how we ourselves have been following this complete lunatic this whole time, a criminal, bound to die in shame for consequence of his acts, just like it happens all the time
And for some of us, we could not accept that Light, the god he made us think he was, could just die, due to a human mistake like that...

*When you're so crazy that you scare a God of Death.*

And, in a way, you would be correct. Light was corrupted and psychologically damaged after first using the Death Note. He justified killing the first two people as a way to cope from the guilt. One of the best videos I have seen in so long. This story was written almost two decades ago, but its thematics and deeper implications for our societies never fail to ring deep. If something like this can so believably happen to a prodigy with a magical diary, you bet it can, has, and will continue to happen to our politicians.
At some points during the show where Light would do something super complicated and it would work, like with L’s death (as sad as it was), the death of that one bus hijacker, or the death of Ray Penber, I always kind of smiled to myself and thought, “Brilliantly executed.”
I have this thing where no matter who the main character of a show is, I root for them if the story is from their perspective or focuses on them the most. Light’s not even my favorite character in the show or the one who I thought had the most amazing or fascinating traits, but I still went right along with everything he did.

シャゼエブShahzaib The dubs actually really good. I prefer subs most of the time but Death Note is one of the few anime I enjoy the dub for.

You make a completely valid point, and I fully agree with that point, but just to let you know, the laughs from 13:11 to 13:22 is the Dub.
