Sol Price was an attorney who mostly worked with wholesalers and typically jewelry wholesalers. He started with a personal investment of 50k (~450k modern), collected that same amount from his clients and law firm as investment, and then relied on his contacts to start with an initial mix of jewelry, furniture, and liquor. Things expanded over time to become more typical of what we would expect.
And the second business was mostly personal investment because the dude was loaded from the success of costco. Also everyone in the industry looked real close at how it was doing amazing until he was forced out so he could basically just get a blank check by asking since fedmart essentially printed money when he was in charge.

Hey Mr Terry. I looked into the LA Costco development, and apparently it’s in the premises of an old hospital. It’s not yet built, but they’re planning to develop the site.
There are some developers designs online if you’re interested.
I live in Australia and we don’t have very many Costco’s at all, and there’s not one really convenient for me. I did, however, watch the New Zealand family go through Costco that they drove 3 1/2 hours to visit. I was just amazed.
One thing is for certain, if I had a convenient Costco, that’s where I would be shopping.

A handful of years ago, Costco came to my workplace and served us free pizza for lunch in a transparent opportunity to get us to talk to their membership salespeople. Unintimidated, I had pizza and got pounced by a sales guy. I explained to him that I rent an apartment in my parents' basement, they have a membership, and if I want anything from Costco, they get it for me, so I don't need a membership. I saw him think deeply about that, and then he was like "Gas! You need a membership because you'll save so much on gas that it would be worth it." So I informed him I don't have a car. That's when he gave up and left me to eat my pizza in peace.

about the theft prevention not being worth it: most supermarkets here in switzerland have stuff like plants, flowers, gardening utensils and so on outside, you take it in to pay. and most of them do not take it in over night. they just leave it out completely unguarded, usually not even a camera. because it's cheaper to havea few people steal a few plants rather than investing the money into labour that it would take to protect them

@20:00 Reps from other companies: Many of these are "trials". Let's say a boutique coffee roaster wants a contract with CostCo. They'll set up a stand and sell their product for a couple of weeks at whatever price they would contract for, then they'll do it again in six months, and maybe a third time. If sales hit certain targets, CostCo offers a permanent contract and then that item becomes a regular item on the shelves.

This is 1997 so the computer model wasn’t as refined as it is now. My team was second place going into the last week so we made a cheaper product and tripled our ad budget… we took over 1st with a shitier product…

I think the distinction between wanting choices and not wanting to choose is that we instinctively know if we only get one choice, it's because we don't like to think - but we also know we've been stuck with things that didn't meet our needs because there were no options. We see choice as the same way we do a fire exit - something we don't want to use but we don't want to see gone.
To give an example - I used to buy whatever tomato sauce can was cheapest. They were all an acceptable quality and none really stood out when I started shopping for myself, so decision made, I grab the lowest number on the shelf without thinking very much. Then, in 2021, I started noticing the Always Save tomato sauce was ruining everything I tried to cook with it as if I'd added a bunch of water to it, meanwhile the price of all of them was skyrocketing because pretend shortage. Because I was angry and my irrational brain felt this had to be some evil corporate scheme to take advantage of me, I tried to use facts to stop that irrational part of my brain. I went out and found that the price should have risen between 40 and 60% but it was more like 120%...before factoring in the fact that they watered it down by an enormous amount. And, to make matters more face-palm worthy, they let the price creep up to the point where the percentage cost difference between them and the name brands wasn't that big anymore. So I bought the name brand, and it was fine. Then I tried the fancy stuff. Now I'm paying $1.10 on average for a can of "San Marzano" tomato paste, diluting it to turn it into sauce myself, and it tastes AMAZING while costing an average of 20% more. As opposed to 2020 where just going to the name brand was a 50% price increase.
So by having a choice, they weren't able to exploit me. But once that choice is made, I switch off my brain when buying it as long as nothing changes.

Yes that’s okay to go in the exit.
No, that’s not weird. My old job used to have scheduled outings to go to Costco for lunch. We would coordinate the trip in stages so we didn’t clog up the line and send out group A B & C.
Fun story, when my husband and I first started dating (like two weeks in) we went to sign him up for a membership to Costco. The lady didn’t know I wasn’t signing up with him so she set out two forms for us to fill out and when I went didn’t start filling it out my hubs said, “well you heard the lady, start filling out the form” and that’s the story how my husband and I got a Costco membership together when we had only been dating for like 2 weeks. We will be married 5 years next month. Love him even more than I knew I did then. And we still go to the same Costco. We are friends with several workers there a few of them ended up being invited to our wedding.

I don't know if it is still the case, but a couple decades ago I read a report that a big part of Costco's ability to keep prices low is that they attempt to only stock items they can turn over quickly, with quickly being before they have to pay their suppliers for the product.

It's true. Most distributors have NET30 terms, so costco has to pay them in 30 days, but their average turnover is 26 days for their products so costco has the money in hand to pay the distributors prior to the bill being due.

When I lived in Shanghai, I would occasionally go to Costco (only one in China at the time) just for the pizza. It was really good. The sauce was sort of like a paste and there was a lot of cheese on it, but it was really good pizza. Nearly similar to Papa Johns. Not saying Papa Johns is shit pizza, just saying the Costco in China had QUALITY food. The other stuff wasn't really quality. I know a lot of Chinese in the US that buy bulk at Costco in the US and resell it on Alibaba or something back in China. That's how I managed to find clothes that fit me because I'd order the stuff online from Alibaba in my size. The Shanghai Costco had Chinese sizes aka little kid size.
